Bay Area group Negative Press Project describes themselves as “a seven-piece electro-acoustic jazz/indie-rock–inspired original music collective”. Co-led by musicians Ruthie Dineen and Andrew Lion, they have announced work on their debut full length release. They’re asking for help from fans, so if you feel so inclined, take a look at their crowdfunding page.
Negative Press Project is an eclectic group. A lot of genre jumping goes on, but the main idea is pretty straight forward: stellar playing. The musicians in the group are all incredibly talented! Dineen (keyboards) and Lion (bass) compose the pieces, which are all open for quality improvisation from the best of the bay.
The lineup for this album will include Chris Sullivan (Alto Sax), Tony Peebles (Tenor Sax), Rafa Postel (Trumpet), Alex Doty (Guitar), Matthew Charles Heulitt (Guitar), Gawain Mathews (Guitar), and Jason Lewis (Drums). They always deliver thrills at their live shows, playing songs that range from the intense barrage of sax notes during the solo on “Fleeced”, to the textural explorations on “Earthquakes & Landings”.
Versatility abounds, and they always look for new ground to explore, so watch for their album, and contribute if you’d like to! - The Bay Bridged

Negative Press Project
Co-directed by Andrew Lion (Bass) and Ruthie Dineen (Piano/Keys), Negative Press Project (NPP) is the culmination of a partnership between a jazz converted “rock & pop” bass player and classically trained pianist, with extensive jazz and afro-cuban/salsa performance experience. Joining Andrew and Ruthie is cast of accomplished West Coast and East Coast based players including, Chris Sullivan (Alto), Tony Peebles (Tenor), Rafa Postel (Trumpet), and Luis Salcedo (Guitar).
Each player is committed to high spirited and mischievous improvisatory statements throughout the twists and turns of NPP’s tightly orchestrated instrumental arrangements.
Based in Oakland, CA, Negative Press Project evolved as the musical vision of bassist and co-leader, Andrew Lion (OONA, Jeff Campbell). NPP began as a one-off studio experiment engineered by Jon Evans (Tori Amos, Sarah Mclachlan), supported by the inimitable Matthew Charles Heulitt (Narada Michael Walden, Zigaboo Modeliste, Moetar), with Joel Behrman (Sheila E., The E Family Band featuring Pete Escovedo, Leah Tysse, Phillip Phillips), pianist, Adam Shulman (Marcus Shelby Orchestra, Adam Shulman Sextet), and drummer, Rick Munoz (Pine & Battery, Jeff Campbell). Andrew built on the foundation of that experience to bring in NPP’s present day co-conspirators.
The group members combine substantial conservatory training (California Jazz Conservatory, Berkeley, CA, Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA, San Jose State University, University of California Berkeley – UC Jazz, and William Patterson University) with diverse performance experience.
Members of Negative Press Project have appeared and performed on late night national television (Jimmy Kimmel Live!), are Grammy award winning artists (Pacific Mambo Orchestra), and have toured domestically and internationally (Jeff Campbell, Katchafire).
