"Mood's Midwestern message catches on with rap music fans"

Mood's positive, non-gangsta style, termed “conscious rap,” has been winning fans both here and overseas. England's New Musical Express called “Snakebacks” “simply the most visionary attempt ... to improve on the Wu-Tang formula.”

The January issue of Rap Pages named Mood 1998's best new group. The Source touted Mood's “incredible promise.” Various underground papers from the Alternative Press to Transworld Skateboarding have had good things to say about the trio, which records for Blunt, a subsidiary of TVT, best known as the home of Nine Inch Nails. - Cincinnati enquirer

6. Mood – Doom
(Blunt)
Buy at iTunes

It took a while for the Midwest to gain ground in the hip-hop game, Chicago and Detroit first establishing their presence before Minneapolis fired their own shots just a few short years later. Cincinnati still isn’t a hip-hop Mecca, but it’s produced a handful of heavyweights, most notably the long-running but less than prolific Mood, a spacy, abstract Ohio group backed by DJ Hi-Tek. Their first effort, the crackly, trippy Doom, is as spacy as the nebula on its front cover, emcees Main Flow and Donte dropping fierce flows over atmospheric production from Jahson. The real treat of the record is in its sonic treatments, the likes of which come much closer to the sample symphonies of DJ Shadow than the hardcore bumps of Primo or Pete Rock. Also appearing on the record is a young emcee by the name of Talib Kweli, who a year later would release his own first essential offering. – Jeff Terich - Trebele

Comment: this album is a masterpiece. Too bad humanity is STUPID and ASLEEP...This should be required listening in all public schools and have a class dedicated to it at Harvard. There is no excuse for this planet being so god damn fucking stupid. Idiot assholes leading masses while real knowledge and wisdom and high skills are swept under the rug, murdered, smuthered, blocked etc.

"Underground Report: Mood"

DX: Fair enough. MOOD is Ohios home-grown. Where does the state stand right now in terms of Hip Hop? Are there any particular trends?
Donte: Hip Hop is in the state of Ohio, Ohio is in a state of denial [laughing]. There is plenty of talent, very few outlets. The trends are about the same that exist in most mid-size cities in America. The radio deejays are not record breakers for local acts. The big problem with Hip Hop in mid-cities is that the whole city/region can be sold out through the one station that actually plays Hip Hop. If you turn on a radio station here you would think there are only 15 artists in the world and only 15 songs the public wants to hear. The flipside of that is that the bar has been set so low: a nice beat and a hook. Now everybody that hears it feels like if the radio station is playing low to no talent artist, they can make a record too. Let me say this clearly: everybody cant rap, everybody cant make beats. Some of yall should just be fans. Real talk. If everybody is making music, who is left to listen to it? [Laughing] - by MINA JASAREVIC : hiphopdx.xom
