“Come Set Me Free” finds Miles Monroe getting things going with what might be described as a psych grunge dub of echoing vocals and riffs. As though he’d listened to a whole lot of Adrian Sherwood laying down the bizarro remix on a Siltbreeze noise punk cut-up tape. Something which the producer never did. But that’s the kind of strange Monroe brings to the first half of the song. Then it becomes some kind of lo-fi Alice Donut inspired stream-of-consciousness warped raga akin to early Butthole Surfers or Flaming Lips. If Eat Skull, Psychedelic Horseshit and Pink Reason decided to record with more conventional clarity they might be making something like this now. Part-psychedelic rock, part-post punk lies this new tune from Miles Monroe “Roll Around Kyoto.” Combining flowing, sometimes intense lyrics with a raw vocal delivery and an en fuego blazing electric guitar work, Miles toes the line between ever-shifting reality and vivid fantasy.
The lo-fi vocals also really do the track some justice. And, can we just talk about The Doors-inspired guitar solo about 2 minutes in?
It might partly be that I’m craving time in Japan (never been) or that this tune has so many of my favorite rock influences packed into it, but “Roll Around Kyoto” makes me want to get out my skateboard, roll around the neighborhood, and come back and buy a ticket to Kyoto.
