ROCKIN' FOR FISHER HOUSE AT CLUB FOX
By Sal Pizarro
After a successful event last year, there's a follow-up benefit for the Palo Alto's Fisher House planned for July 27 at Club Fox in Redwood City. Greg McMorrow and his band Mick & the Big Dawg Patriots will be headlining the show, and other entertainment will include comedians Michael Slack and Reggie Steele from Rooster T. Feathers in Sunnyvale as well as vocalist and pianist Megan Gluhan.
There's also a fun opportunity for donors at the show who give $500 or more to the Fisher House, which is a place for people to stay while their loved ones in the military are being treated at the nearby VA hospital. The concert is being recorded for release later in the year, and those $500 donors will be invited to the studio at a later date to help select the songs and will be listed on the album as "honorary executive producers." Bet that credit spruces up your LinkedIn profile. - San Jose Mercury News
Mick & The Big Dawg Patriots: Music helping our veterans
By Paul Freeman
For The Daily News
POSTED: 04/18/2012 04:57:10 PM PDT0 COMMENTS| UPDATED: 2 YEARS AGO
Twenty years ago, the musical artist known simply as Mick walked away from songwriting and performing. He had achieved a measure of success, fronting the band Bombardier, but had grown weary of the lifestyle.
Recently, Mick's creative juices began flowing again. He wrote a batch of songs that had friends bubbling with enthusiasm. But once he began recording, one question kept popping up.
Mick, who grew up in Menlo Park and resides in San Jose, tells The Daily News, "Everyone was asking me, 'What are you going to do with this?' I have no illusions about going on tour, trying to become a rock star. It's not something I would want to do. It's not something that's even possible.
"I thought this thing had fallen together so well that it obviously should be served well. That prompted me to use the completion of the album as a way to do something good."
Mick decided to use his new album, "Behind Brick Walls," a collaboration with Nashville producer/recording artist Jon Statham, to benefit Palo Alto's Fisher House. On Sunday afternoon, Mick & the Big Dawg Patriots band will play a concert at Redwood City's Club Fox. Admission includes a free CD.
Having lined up underwriters to sponsor this event, Mick will be able to donate all of the ticket proceeds and online streaming revenue to the facility. He's encouraging those who opt for the online live version of the concert (VenMundi.com) to hold parties at their homes and pass the hat for Fisher House. Through streaming, service men and women will be able to experience the concert at bases around the world.
"I gravitated to the Fisher House, because you look for charities that you have a real affinity with. Our country's been at war for over 10 years. If you read or listen to the popular media, these wars are essentially winding down. This is a great country, but this is a time when Americans kind of go on with the rest of their lives and, in the past, have forgotten our wounded soldiers. So I looked to see how I might do something to keep wounded soldiers in people's minds. And I discovered Fisher House." - San Jose Mercury News
