"The night started off with an unexpected surprise as Detroit area singer/songwriter Michelle Held took the stage. She is a writer with the great gift of telling heartbreaking and jarring tales in an honest and open delivery. “Fearless" is what my friend called her performance, and it was eternally fitting of this night. I've always said it takes great courage to step on a stage to sing and play for strangers. Harder yet is to sing deeply personal, sometimes uncomfortable songs, while playing guitar and connecting with the audience. On this night, the pure poetry of her words, perfectly enhanced by her splendid uniqueness of the soprano tremolo in her voice, carried the crowd on a raw and emotional journey and moved them to enthusiastic applause after every song. She even put melody to a friend's lyrics (poet Hala Dika) in one of the nights most touching moments. This was everything that pure singer/songwriting is supposed to be about, and it was spectacular.” - John Bayerl
"Held plays gentle folk with oft scathing lyrics. It’s her voice that adds the X-factor; that little bit of welcome strange." - Brett Callwood
“One of the excellent performers in Sunday's Kansas City Folk Festival, along with blues great Bobby Rush, Latin star Ani Cordero with her captivating songs, keynote Billy Bragg, and others. I missed these performers due to the Music Camp. However, I briefly met Michelle and discovered her unique voice and compelling lyrics later, in the process of trying to catch up on some of the artists through video.” - Ron Wray

Bio
Michelle Held is a modern folk writer of songs for the struggling soul, with open heart lyricism and light-hearted presence. This distinctive voice precedes her with the power to transport and, without notice, you'll be sitting on the floor at a folk concert in the 1970s captivated and witnessing something special. An Honorable Mention in the past three Telluride Troubadour Contests, Held has been welcomed onto renowned stages, such as Kansas City Folk Festival, Wheatland Music Festival and The Ark. Detroit Metro Times writes, “Held plays gentle folk with oft-scathing lyrics. It’s her voice that adds the X-Factor; that little bit of welcome strange.” And Tom Paxton says, “Two years ago, I told Michelle that I thought she had the gift. I am changing ‘thought’ to ‘know.’”
