Cat & Maomi

Fledgling ravers Maomi Chu and Carly Lynch met in a crowd of over 150,000 strong, their serendipitous connection 1,200 miles away from their native Texas at EDC Vegas over 10 years ago. Today, DJs Maomi and Cat are Miāo, a collaborative project for two artists whose music careers and personal friendship have flourished in parallel in the years since. In that time, Cat and Maomi’s techno and house sets have graced many stages; from warehouse to club, poolside to open night skies across Texas, Vegas, Miami and their current home of Los Angeles. As a producing and performing DJ act, Miāo spins sultry, sexy grooves with the express purpose of making bodies move. Nowhere is that reputation more evident than Magia Pura, a bi-monthly event created, organized, and hosted by the duo, currently approaching its one-year anniversary of selling out venues across Downtown LA and Hollywood. 

Background

Cat and Maomi linked up at the University of North Texas following their chance meeting in Vegas, nurturing a friendship and shared passion for electronic dance music. Their work with Full Access (promo) and working for Jeremy Ward in Texas saw deeper immersion into dance and rave culture, expanding their network to include prominent figures and venues within the Dallas dance club scene. In 2017, after countless shows as attendees in the crowd, the two moved to LA in pursuit of their own dreams behind the decks. Their music production education started off in Dallas with reputable dj and producer, Chris Lund and then included stops at the renowned Point Blank Music School and tailored instruction at Matrix Sessions once they moved to Los Angeles. 

Though they’ve performed and produced music as Miāo from the very beginning, Cat and Maomi’s profiles have risen considerably as solo performers and producers in the time since. With solo billings across Los Angeles, Texas, and Vegas, not to mention regular installments of her M Radio series and solo releases in the Gemini EP and singles “Vibes” and “Your Eyes”, DJ Maomi Chu has developed a loyal following for melodic techno with an emotionally evocative air. During the same period, DJ Cat has blazed a path all her own, with signature deep and melodic tech sets as well as having an influence in the underground techno warehouse scene across LA and Dallas, including a performance at Coachella and a residency at Control Room LA. Cat’s notoriety continued to grow following label releases with Minimal Sessions, Funk n’ Deep, Optimal Sonance, Audiophile Deep, Subtek and Descend Records.

Following a 2020 reunion set in the desert, Maomi and Cat recaptured the shared passion that set them on their musical path all those years ago in the festival crowd. The return to Miāo is a return to roots, all while embracing the respective musical evolution of each artist’s post-pandemic journey. That return also coincided with the launch of their Magia Pura party in LA, immediately establishing itself as an event to watch. Working together on concept and execution in addition to performing, Cat and Maomi have curated a distinct decorative and musical palette for their Magia Pura events. Bringing together tribal, Afro, Caribbean, and Latin house mixes from headliners across the industry, the subtly sexy Magia Pura movement continues to grow, expecting to culminate in August 2022 with its largest event celebrating a one-year anniversary. Currently, Cat and Maomi are back in the studio together working on their brand of melodic techno with sensual grooves. With new music on the way and the growing profile of Magia Pura events, expect to see and hear much more of Miāo in the coming year.
