MEGAN KASHAT TALKS TO US ABOUT GHOSTWRITING, FUTURE GOALS AND PROJECTS AND HER LATEST RELEASE 'LOVE YOU'
Known for her superb song writing and vocal talents, Megan Kashat has been working harder than ever in releasing consistently stunning songs, pairing up with some of the most talented producers the electronic scene has to offer. Joining forces with Yunus Durali and Drop G ‘Love You’ is a chill-out Deep House infused track that features a classic slow jam groove and a solid driving bass-line. We caught up with Megan to discuss ghostwriting, goals and future projects.
SUM UP ‘LOVE YOU’ IN 3 WORDS?
Spiritual. Sexy. Euphoric.
HOW DOES THIS DIFFER TO SOME OTHERS OF YOUR RELEASES?
It’s way better than my previous releases. My latest release ‘Break My Heart’ is really strong also, but ‘Love You’ has a special place in my heart. It doesn’t have anything to do with the producers, I find all of the producers I work with extremely talented. I just think I wrote this one better for whatever reason. Melodically it’s better, the structure of the song was strong and the story line was on a topic that I’ve never done before.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE LYRICS?
The song is about someone I believe to have been with in every lifetime. Life is a cycle, you always come back to what you love, or it finds you again in some way. So it’s literally about loving someone to the extent of eternity, hence the line, “What a fateful manifestation, to find you here again in this lifetime… I’ll love you forever.” It’s also about being so spiritually connected that there’s a sense of knowing everything about them, even when they’re thinking about you or imagining you from across the world.
WHAT ARE YOUR FEELINGS TOWARDS GHOST WRITING?
I would love to ghost write. I write up to 3 songs a day, and if I were a ghost-writer, I’d be less pressed to release so much music. It would make my life a lot less stressful haha! I’d really love to write someone else’s story for them, and help out the artists who could use it.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO WRITE ‘LOVE YOU’?
15 minutes.
DID YOU ENCOUNTER ANY DIFFICULTIES WITH THIS RELEASE?
Yes. I release a TON of music, and I can never catch up. Most people tell me I release too much, and I need to let the release grow, but a lot of my work is collaborations, and producers don’t really care what you just released most of them have their own agenda which I understand, and highly respect. It does get overwhelming though, and then waiting to get label placements is another struggle because if they don’t respond you’re not sure if they will or if you should wait. It’s really tough, and takes a lot of prediction and self-determination to make the right moves. Sometimes you nail it, sometimes you don’t.
CAN WE EXPECT MORE COLLABORATION WITH YOU AND YUNUS DURALI IN THE FUTURE?
I will be collaborating with Yunus for the rest of my career. He is a genius, and he’s become a great friend. He has the exact sound I was searching for for so many years. We’re working on a new track as we speak.
WHAT IS THE ONE GOAL YOU HAVE SET FOR YOURSELF THIS YEAR?
To take a break from recording this summer and play a ton of shows! I seriously miss the stage, that’s the only reason I ever got into this, but then I found myself in love with writing and vocal production. It’ll be nice to have that balance!
DO YOU HAVE A DREAM LABEL THAT YOU WOULD LOVE TO RELEASE ON?
I don’t know honestly. I used to lush over labels, but now I don’t care so much about the name or popularity associated with any label. My dream is to work with a label that really believes in my music and has the weight behind them to really get it out there.
WHAT OTHER PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT?
I have a collaboration coming out with DJ Tarkan, it’s a beautiful track and super excited to work with him. Another one with my friend Zeni N, he’s also a really talented guy and has a unique deep house sound. Another one with Mattsu, but that won’t be out until later this year. I also recently connected with my friend Tennebreck from Romania, and we’re finishing up a track also which I just love, it reminds me a lot of Avicii’s work. Just finished up another one with Kougan Ray who I met while I was in London, and awaiting another release with Burak Cilt which I’m stoked about… It’s a really beautiful record! I have another track with DJ Rudii and it’s sickkk!!! Can’t wait for that one… Then there’s two releases coming out soon with my friend Mar G. Also finishing up a new one with Yunus… There’s a few others that are extremely new, so no need to mention those. And 2 other collaborations that I can’t talk about at the moment, but you’ll hear it all when it’s out. Then there’s always my solo project, which took a back seat over the last few months. I’m excited to get back to that! - One EDM
Singer-songwriter Megan Kashat has paired up with UK producer Kougan Ray to produce her latest Deep House inspired tune called ‘Breathe’. Megan tells an emotional tale through her heartfelt lyrics that’s paired with a catchy vocal hook just before the funky, bass-fuelled drop kick in. Kougan Ray’s production work on this track is second to none and the string-infused ending adds a truly unique touch.
With an ongoing streak of fruitful collaborations, Megan Kashat’s vocal and writing skills are becoming requested from producers internationally, and she is becoming a rising talent within the electronic music scene. Megan frequently adds depth and emotion to each lyric she writes and provides a relatable quality that has her audience fall in love with over and over again.
This is the first collaboration between Megan and Kougan Ray, who’s had previous features on Spotify’s esteemed ‘New Music Friday’ playlist and has produced music for Sony Music. With both artists hailing from Middle Eastern descent, their heritage is beautifully weaved in and out of ‘Breathe’ adding a more personal feel to this song.
Megan has also engaged Arab-American, Detroit native artist Kassem Beydoun to create a stunning, hand painted piece of artwork for ‘Breathe’. Megan Kashat and Kougan Ray’s ‘Breathe’ is out now, so be sure to grab your copy from all major online platforms. - I WANT EDM
Megan Kashat has been climbing the ranks recently with releases such as ‘Shame’ and ‘Waters’. She is now back with her latest single titled ‘Run’, this song showcases Megan’s ability to tell a story with her lyrics all whilst staying true to her roots. We caught up with Megan to discuss her latest single, sharing music and the electronic scene.
All your songs have very strong meanings behind them, what was the inspiration behind this one?
My mind works in unique ways. I’ve always had extra sensory perception. I can see future events, recall past lives, predict unforeseen endeavours, and perceive unordinary things about human beings. I don’t identify as a psychic because that’s got a negative connotation to it, and I don’t walk around with a crystal ball.
The song Run was written about my abilities and the suppression that exists on this planet. Psychiatry exists to numb spiritual abilities, so this song expresses how if certain individuals were made aware of it of individuals like me, they’d label me as crazy and put me away. That sounds extreme, but there is a real agenda happening on this planet and there are evil individuals controlling the earth. People like me are not an ally of theirs.
How would you describe ‘Run’?
I write in truths, so I would describe Run as an end to all of the lies that we have been brainwashed to believe. The notion that we are “only human” and “we can’t change the world” is a bunch of propaganda that we’ve been groomed to live with. We invent everything, from the coffee we drink in the morning to the phone calls we receive at night to the wars and successes that manifest in the universe. The problem is that not everyone is aware of it.
What made you decide to have remixes of the track?
It was the label’s decision actually. I think it was a really good move on their end, and I’m glad I was able to provide something to the producers that allowed them to express themselves through my work, while at the same time exposing me to their audience. It was a win-win situation for all involved.
Can we hear any of your influences in ‘Run’?
I didn’t have any influences, just my own life that was the driving force behind what I created. 5. If you could listen to one generation of music forever what would it be? 90’s for sure!!! There was everything from rock, to trance, to adult contemporary. That was before the digital age when real instruments were used more, and songwriting wasn’t so superficial. It was a beautiful time for music.
Any favourite lyric in this song?
I think the best thing I wrote in here was the opening line. “My dreams are premonitions, the type of intuition I wish I didn’t have.” I always have dreams that are literally happening as I’m dreaming them or they show up the next day. I’m very grateful for that awareness.
What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free?
I’m conflicted with this question. In one sense I think online music sharing is brilliant. I’ve got a countless amount of collaborations just from people who watch the well-known YouTube channels that have featured my songs on their page. It’s exposed me in ways marketing dollars wouldn’t. As for giving music away for free, with streaming the way it is right now, I think we’re all giving it away for free whether we want to or not.
The only issue I find with it is that it is out the exchange. What I mean by that is when you get something you give something in exchange for the thing you’re acquiring. But for music, which in my opinion is the most powerful force in this universe, we’re underpaid for it. A car ride without music is miserable, a restaurant without music is less enjoyable, a wedding without music would barely be a ceremony, and you get the point… So why has the most valuable thing on this planet lost its value when it’s usage has only become more necessary with time?
What do you do in your free time?
I don’t have free time. Time is not free. Time is money.
Your opinion on the current Electronic Music scene?
I adore the electronic music scene. My experience as a vocalist coming in from Pop & R&B has been such a miracle. It’s totally collaborative, everyone shares each other’s work, DJ’s remix your tracks, add you to their playlists, etc… It is a team effort, and it’s really a family. It’s all about the music and it always has been and I admire that about this entire scene and the people in it. They’ve kept their integrity with what good music is and I think that’s the reason music continues to get better and better in this genre.
Can you tell us an exclusive on what you have planned for next year?
I have many plans for the upcoming year, but time will tell what they are. All I can say is the Middle East is on the agenda, and I’m truly looking forward to it! - EKM CO
Megan Kashat is a star on the rise, after having a successful career as a dancer she has now set her sights on her music career. With two new tracks coming out soon its clear that she is an all-rounder, find out more about Megan below.
Hi Megan, how are you and what’s going on in your world at the moment?
Hello, I’m good! My world at the moment is a bit random. I’m currently on a spiritual retreat, and I’m in and out of the recording studio working on new music for you all to listen to!
Where are you currently based?
Detroit, Michigan is home for me. However, currently, I am in East Grinstead, which is a little village in the United Kingdom about an hour outside of London. I suspect I will be here for a while…
How would you describe your sound?
My sound can vary. Different producers can bring out different colours in an artist. Right now it’s a fusion of electronic and pop, but I add Middle Eastern Elements and sounds to it, being that I am Iraqi. Lately, I’ve been singing in English and Arabic in my tracks, I think it gives it an exotic feel and is true to my roots.
Has your style gone through many changes over the years?
It’s definitely gone through changes, to say the least. It’s more like a face-lift. When I started I had just come off of a tour with Charlie Wilson, and my producer was his music director. His sound was very much R&B, and he was brilliant at it. However, my heart was always home with dance music, and after many years of really building myself up and meeting the right people, I finally found producers who gave me exactly what I was looking for.
Who were your influences growing up?
I had many; it was a weird combination actually. I loved Britney Spears, Nadia Ali, Mariah Carey, Coldplay, Incubus, and I also loved Sarah McLauchlan. I think it was easy for me to empathize with people’s emotions, and that always came out in these artists’ music. If an artist was honest in their artistry, I was able to connect, and that for me was influential. I also loved classical music!
How did you get involved in the music business?
I was writing poetry at 9, and singing in the choir, but primarily I was a dancer and that’s what I did as a profession in my younger years. I was dancing professionally at 16. When I was dancing on tour with Charlie Wilson, I was so inspired by the band and musicians. I didn’t have an agenda with music or anything, but I wanted to get into the studio so I asked Cordell Walton, who was the music director if I could get in the studio with him. My third song ever into the recording studio, I was offered a major recording contract by Charlie’s management. It was unplanned and unexpected, but it was then I knew I was destined for music and I’ve pursued it ever since.
Where would you like to see yourself in the months ahead?
On tour… I always want to see myself on tour. I love the creative process like songwriting and all of that is a major part of who I am, but what really got me into all of this was the stage. It’s my driving passion in my life. I live for it.
Which is your ultimate career dream?
I don’t really believe anyone can have an ultimate dream because there is never an ending to anything in life. Things will always keep going and taking on new forms, once you achieve one dream, you go on creating the next and it gets bigger and bigger, and it never stops.
The only thing I’ve ever wanted to do was to perform on the largest stages in the world, and I’ve already done that. So now I think to maintain that lifestyle is where the real blessing lies. And of course I want to have the ability to help others in need, I believe that with great influence comes great responsibility.
Who’s inspiring you in 2018?
To be honest, I am not really inspired by anyone in 2018, at least not as far as mainstream music is concerned. I respect all of the artists being pushed by the labels, and I understand everyone has a message and a vision and they deserve that validation and recognition. But I feel like storytelling is lost right now in songwriting. People are going through heavy things, and music is supposed to be that force where they feel understood and not alone. I just don’t get that in new music lately, but I do hope to bring it back and I trust others will eventually do the same.
If you could choose, who would you like to collaborate with?
I would like to collaborate with Mahmut Orhan at the moment. His music really spoke to me as a Middle Eastern girl who grew up on dance music. He added the right amount of culture to dance beats and rhythms and I love everything about what he does.
Tell us something not many people know about Megan Kashat!
I’m kind of a psychic… I don’t like to say that because people automatically think I’m weird and I think people think I sit around with a crystal ball wearing some gipsy style headband! I don’t do those things, but I always was able to foresee future events growing up, and I’d have dreams that would end up being the next day’s occurrences. As I got older and my awareness level expanded, and it got to the point where I’d even know right before someone was about to call my phone or I knew what someone was going to say. My abilities stem out pretty far. I’ve embraced it as a gift now instead of being afraid that people opinions. I think we all have abilities, but they’re suppressed to the degree that they feel the people who surround them will accept it. I just wrote a song about this, it’s called Run. Cats out of the bag… Cheers! - Hypestorm
