Lyric Dubee

Lyric Dubee was first introduced here last year in July! Since then he has been busy with concerts, live appearances and showcasing his talents at a variety of venues in Toronto and throughout Canada!

Lyric has already attained some monumental pinnacles in his career. This young Indi artist is not only an amazing performer and guitarist, but is an amazing song writer! Lyric released his Debut Album last year and recently released his second CD which includes Nine Original Songs. Each song has a different sound and feel with a unique genre blend which can only be described as Lyric’s.

Like his Debut album this new CD is another gem that must be heard! Each track is a masterpiece that truly demonstrates just how talented young Lyric is in his writing and arrangement skills. In addition to this, Lyric’s vocals are now more mature as his vocals have dropped dramatically.

Authoring this website has provided me with a unique opportunity to witness a number of youngsters through their voice change. I always wonder what the final outcome will be in these young men’s singing ability. For Lyric Dubee, it’s amazingly wonderful! Lyric sounds better than he ever has.

Lyric still acquires his inspiration from books and movies which are reflected throughout his song writing. With the eclectic mix of sounds and styles, Lyric has decided to name his genre of music Revolution Rock (combination of Rock/Pop/Blues/Country/Jazz). The newest album has nine songs including one bonus track and an eight page pull out with the words to each song.

Alive is the one song and title track on the new CD that took a while to name. Recently Lyric was able to view the series “Vampire Diaries”, which partially inspired him to write this song. It is a song for guitar lovers as well and has a John Mayer inspired riff.
Perfection is a pop song that will be made into a music video shortly. The video story is about a girl who sees herself as unattractive, but the guy sees her true inner beauty. If you read his introduction article here last summer, then you saw the very beginning of his work on this song in an exclusive and personal behind the scenes acoustic version of this song. The final studio version is also on SoundCloud.Shout is a completely different jazz song with a Santana like guitar solo. Lyrics vocals and riffs on this track are incredibly enjoyable! His youthful energy and soul that is poured into his music is simply captivating! I was instantly returned to the 70s when I was in my teens and listening continually to my Santana collection. She’s The One has a Country Rock flare. On this song Lyric is joined by Virgil Scott, a well known musician friend doing backup vocals. Lyric also plays the lap steel slide guitar on this track, a new addition to his guitar collection utilized on this album. Here it on SoundCloud! If this is your first time hearing Lyric I guarantee it will not be your last. Whether you’re a country or rock lover you’re going to love Lyric!

Alarmed is also unique due to the fact that it was written and played on his classical guitar. His Mon to Fri 6 a.m. classical guitar lessons has paid off making their mark here. The nylon strings give this song a uniquely warm feeling. Here it on SoundCloud!

Ghost falls in the rock category. This song is a power house when performed live, especially the guitar solo at the end when the drums change to double time. Lyric has a unique way of capturing a very eerie and intense feeling in on this track. I know if a film director is reading this article and is looking for soundtracks for his next Ghost or Vampire flick, he is going to want to contact Lyric. I personally can see both “Ghost” and “Alive” being featured within the soundtrack of a major motion picture. Hear it on SoundCloud!

This song also has a video made by a fan.
Second Chance was the last song recorded for the album. Pushing his song writing technical skills, Lyric wrote this one in 6/8 time. This is quite an accomplishment for a 14 year old. The lyrics contain powerful words of emotion and love, making this a true competitive classic love song. Hear it on SoundCloud. I think you will have to agree that Lyric writes and produces like some of the very best in the music industry.

There are some really great sounds coming out of Canada and Lyric Dubee is leading the pack. He has always brought great music to his fans with his outstanding guitar playing and his gift for writing songs, he brings enjoyment to all. On his first CD, he had seven songs that blew people away, now on "Alive" his fans has nine new ones to jam out to, and they are awesome! Lyric put a lot of work into this CD, and boy does it show. This project took almost two years to put together, but his determination has really paid off. He started recording the album in the spring of 2012, but because of the many gigs and shows he had through the summer he was unable to complete it till the fall of 2012.

On the CD there is a song that really stands out called, "Perfection". This song is about a girl who Lyric sees as perfect. Anyone listening to this song will definitely be able to relate. The lyrics can bring memories of that perfect girl back, and just how amazing she was when you first met her. Lyric writes and composes his own songs, and this song "is" Perfection. The harmonies were all done by Lyric, and they are perfect.

Lyric is not only a great writer, but an excellent instrumentalist. When he recorded the CD he played all the guitars, lead, rhythm, slide guitars and keyboards. For a couple of songs he brought in another guitarist to do some rhythm to get a different flare. Jeff Wardell the producer of the CD, added in the other instruments like the violin, bass and drums.

While Perfection is a great song, there are a couple of others on the CD that are special to Lyric. One of the songs is "Alarmed" this was the first song he wrote with a classical guitar. He is also going to try to tour some new cities and countries like the U.S. He will be continuing to study for classic guitar exams and his major obstacle, conquer grade 7 before the end of the year. While the making of his new CD was exciting, so was starting high school this past fall. He says his elementary school was very small with not many students, but the high school is five times that. He says he also likes the change and all the new friends he has met. At his new school he is experimenting with some new instruments, like saxophone and piano.

"She's The One" is going for a somewhat country rock sound. Unlike the first song, this is a "romantic" but more mature song. The adult voices in the chorus add a touch to the song that makes it more amazing than it already is. Lyric's voice has grown in such an incredible way. The sound is fast, fun, and entertaining. The riffs are excellent, perfect for making you dance. "Alarmed," on the other hand, is full of inspirational lyrics where Dubee sings over and over again for those who have been disappointed and those who think they are good for nothing: they are not alone. There's someone that cares about your situation.

"Star" begins in a rather gloomy way with a riff that immediately catches us, with some folk vibes in it. The drum beats and bass lines might not be the stars of this show, but they certainly can be felt. Again lovely but bold vocals, along with the synthesizer in the choir, are just great. And again we can see some good aspects similar to those found in the music of artists like John Mayer.

"Tears" is the final track, and as indicated in the title, is a remix so you can expect some electronica elements during the song. With electric guitar riffs with synths and a voice with a bit of auto tune, it is like a good cross between Depeche Mode and Duran Duran. It's entertaining, good pop and once you hear it, you might not be able to stop humming it.

In conclusion, although this is not a record that would blow your mind and drive you crazy, it is a pretty cool record to sit and enjoy, maybe even to sing along to. It is not so heavy, but not so soft either.

About two years after stepping into the music scene with his debut CD Broken Dreams, Baxter’s Lyric Dubee is ready to give his fans more.

The nine tracks in Dubee’s second album Alive, which was released this past December, showcases the young singer/songwriter’s evolving style that blends

different genres, from pop and rock, to blues, country and even hints of jazz.

His unique sound, a style he’s dubbed Revolution Rock, is featured once again throughout his latest work, though this time around fans will notice Dubee has done some growing up.

“It’s a bunch of different styles once again,” said Dubee, now 14 and in Grade 9 at St. Joan of Arc in Barrie. “My voice has matured, along with my music…my writing is more complicated and advanced.”

Like his debut CD, Dubee wrote the music and lyrics for the entire album. He also drew on many of the same sources of inspiration.

“I’m inspired by lots of things,” he said. “Movies, books, things from my dreams, or it could be something as simple as walking in the park and seeing a bird fly. Anything.”

Dubee’s interest in vampires once again found its way into the tracks.

“The title track, Alive, it’s a vampire one,” he said. “It’s based mostly on Vampire Diaries and Interview with the Vampire. But I was inspired by Twilight as well.

“The song has ups and downs.... it’s minor and really sad in one part, and then major and kind of happier sounding,” he added.

Overall Dubee said his latest work is his best yet and is the result of the many experiences he’s had in the past two years.

During that time he’s played over 50 live performances and has appeared on local stages in Barrie and in his hometown of Essa. He’s also had the chance to play in front of crowds in Toronto, like at the North by Northeast Festival at Harbourfront Centre, and at an arts benefit concert in Sault Ste. Marie.

“The sounds I’m getting out my guitar now are a lot better,” he said.

Dubee will be celebrating his newest album at a release party coming up later this year.

It will be held April 14 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the new Cava Lounge in Barrie, located at 24 Dunlop St.

“We’ll play all the stuff off the album, we’ll have a full band…it’s going to be a full party,” he said.

"You do so many tracks and only one would fit," he recalled. "I knew it would be a lot of work, but I didn't think it would be that much."

Hard work isn't holding the teen back, but the money to cut another album is.

He has plenty of songs to put together a new album. With the time and money it takes to create it, however, Lyric is looking to record his second album in 2012. Until then, look out for Lyric at local festivals and events.

The 4th Annual New Music Fest kicked off at The Mansion Night Club with The Reason, Andrew Cole and Local Musician Grant Boyer! Next came the Headliner Concert, featuring The Tea Party, Ian Thornley, Big Wreck and Into the Entropy at The Roxx Concert Hall. The rest of the event rocked Barrie as 90 live touring artists performed a series of Indie Artist Showcases at Barrie’s best live music venues. The New Music Awards wrapped up at The Mansion Night Club, featuring an amazing performance by young local artist, LYRIC DUBEE! BARRIE - With a name like Lyric, this Barrie boy was destined to be in music.
Twelve-year-old Lyric Dubee is one of the artists taking part in this weekend’s Barrie New Music Festival.

“This is my third time in the festival,” he said. “It was the first real festival I ever played in so I keep coming back.”

The guitarist/vocalist, who lives just south of Barrie near Thornton, performs a mix of blues and new rock. His inspirations are Jimi Hendrix and John Mayer.

“I am also inspired by bands like Theory of a Deadman and Headly, but my biggest influence is Buddy Guy,” Dubee said.

Recently Dubee has been hard at work writing his own music, which he will unveil on the New Music Fest audience.

“I was listening to a lot of music, and decided to give writing a try. My first song was horrible. But I’ve kept at it. I start with a chord progression, then add in some cool sounds.”

For the festival Dubee has recruited a few friends to accompany him on drums and guitar.

While the young rocker is looking forward to performing at the festival, he said his ultimate goal is to work behind the scenes.

“I’d love to have a job working in a studio somewhere and writing music for other musicians,” he said, “I’m working on learning the bass guitar and piano right now, and I’m getting back into vocal lessons. I just love making music.”

Lyric Dubee performs 8 p.m. Friday at Hooters.
