Bio

Love Junky is a folk-rock jam band from Dallas, TX, USA, Earth. Jonathan Hopkins (vocals, piano, guitar) and Ollie Mong (upright bass, kick drum) first met in 2006 while attending medical school in Fort Worth. They became brothers.

Jonathan began playing piano at age 8 citing Tchaikovsky, Grieg and the Grim Reaper as early influences. Long road trips with his father listening to Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie opened his eyes to a world beyond classical music. Delusions of grandeur led him to rock and roll. He has not looked back.

Ollie met the upright bass in third grade. Raised on hippie dreams and Oregon sunshine, he learned classical technique in orchestra only to be sullied later by his affinity for grunge. Curiosity drew him to bluegrass and dirty funk, then into the Crab Nebula. Lessons were learned, some were not.

Serendipitously, the two landed in Dallas and decided it was time to make music. “The universe was telling us something,” states Hopkins. He had already written a library of campfire songs while traipsing through the New Mexico wilderness. Resurrecting those songs together alongside new piano compositions, a special chemistry was born.

Upon entering the studio, a creative explosion occurred- the band taping thirteen tracks over the course of three years. The recording process allowed them the freedom to layer instruments like never before. Hopkins proved talented with the shaker, Mong with the cymbal. The undertaking was fruitful, but by no means painless.

Hopkins' energetic lead vocals perfectly complement the band’s urgent, driving rhythms. The result is a sound far more dynamic than expected from a duo.

Love Junky will release their debut album, ‘Cause It’s Real, on November 20th, 2018
