Denver, CO singer-songwriter Lee Clark Allen shared the intriguing first take from his future album, “My World Is Yours.”
“Alive” is a thick soul/hip-hop slice that focuses on spatiality and dynamics. The moderate instrumental melodics bring suspense-flavored excitement, unfolding alongside the heartbeat-paced rhythm section. Lee Clark Allen is an emerging R&B/soul singer/songwriter who recently released his debut EP entitled Little Rock. The album title originates from his growing up in Arkansas. This album certainly has that feel of southern soul, gospel and blues that was a part of American history that became the foundation for so much music. The production does sound modern in a good way. In fact the production is truly exceptional. The instrumentation as well as the vocals are beautifully captured. That being said the seeds of this music have roots that trace much farther back. Suffice it to say there is a beautiful blend of aesthetics that spans over decades, in fact you could argue even over a century.
The EP starts with “This Little Light” which is indeed a cover done in a unique way involving what sounds like a school choir. It’s only about thirty seconds but it is a nice way to introduce the EP.
The first full-fledged song is “I Won’t Tell Myself A Lie” and I loved the smooth vocals right away and it is the arguable highlight. I will add that not only are Allen’s vocals absolutely rich and soulful but so is the female accompaniment as well. The instrumentation also just nails all the right notes. It’s an absolutely gorgeous recording that is crisp and natural in the best way possible.
Up next is “Religion (You Are My)” which contains more exceptional vocal performances from everyone involved. The song is like butter on warm toast. It melts and is soulful in a way the whole congregation would be happy to be attending.
“The Way You Love” is about a minute long but perhaps is the most original sounding song in the batch. It’s stripped but unique sounding. I loved it. “Mud (Rise)” is another stripped back song really putting the vocals up front. This song is pretty straightforward but there is just a ton of emotion spewing out from the song. It picks up slightly and with some finger snaps and sounds like the most soulful church musician that you would beg to have at your Sunday worship session.
Last up is “Lay Your Head” and again is fairly stripped back. It’s even more mellow until the end of the song which is a joyful celebration.
I absolutely loved this album. This music is just flat out better than the majority of music that is considered popular. No amount of fancy tricks or some type of computer algorithm are going to create the soul and heart these songs have. Music like this is reflection of the human condition itself. Highly recommended.

Lee Clark Allen is an RnB artist out of Denver, who not only writes all of his songs, but produces them. He, with the help of his band, has released his debut EP “Little Rock”.
As I listen to this project, I quickly draw a comparison to both Daniel Caesar and Anderson .Paak. Both of these artists are incredible vocalists and they both sound good with live music behind them. Allen is no different. Although I’m comparing him to these artists, Allen has an extremely unique voice and sound that separates him from other soul artists I’ve heard. His voice is very well complimented by the band that he records with. I hear drums, guitars, keys and more. Also, I don’t know the name of the young woman who sings some of the background vocals, but her voice is very smooth and soothing.
Allen has a very soulful vibe to his voice. He seems to be a young man with an old soul. The EP is very old school with a mixture of some modern sounding elements. This music is like a mix of old spirituals, church songs and slow jams. There are so many layers to each song, not just musically, but lyrically. It reminds me of the old days when songs could really make the listener feel a myriad of emotions.
It greatly shocks me that this project is a debut. Allen’s sound comes off so natural and polished that I would think this was a second or third release. The fact that Allen produced every song on this EP speaks even more to his talent level.
There isn’t a single weak song on this project. Every track pulled me in and kept me for the duration. The 16 minute project flew by and left me wishing that there were 10 more songs to listen to. My personal favorites are “Mud (Rise)” and “Lay Your Head”.
This EP was a breath of fresh air and something new. I’ve been made an instant fan of Lee Clark Allen and his band, and I can’t wait for him to release some more smooth tunes. - Mitch Darrell
So good... Seriously. Must hear. It's clear his music comes from the heart
He's crazy talented and an awesome singer and performer. Allen is an outstanding songwriter and he's a pleasure in a small room with a mic and a piano or a huge stage with his extremely talented full band. 5/5 (seriously the full band is bananas)
Lee Clark Allen is a seasoned performer and songwriter who delivers compelling songs in an unassuming and relatable way. He knows how to connect with his audience and make them feel. He writes the kind of music I could listen to from the beginning of the record to end - just put it on and let it play. He believes in his music and makes you believe in it too. I highly recommend Lee Clark Allen and his band. Spend a night groovin’ with them – you won’t be sorry you did! - Attenders
New Release from @leeclarkallen “I Won’t Tell Myself A Lie” is now playing #NewMusicMonday today on @AVALiveRadio with host @JacquelineJax.
The song is about being vulnerable, honest, and authentic with a person you are pursuing, whether they be of the same/opposite race, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, etc. “I Won’t Tell Myself A Lie” is that “I’m ready for love” jam! One of my favorite lines from the song is “I see you, and I just wanna be yours.” When I see the whole person for who they are and make the choice to be accepting of that to declare “I just wanna be yours,” love love love is in the air; and that’s what we all desire and need! Agape! - Jacqueline Jax
Lee Clark Allen released his first single, ‘I Won’t Tell Myself A Lie’ on 17 March, ahead of his debut EP, set to come out later in the spring. Known around the world as St Patrick’s Day, the date has an even more special significance for Allen, as his older brother’s birthday; the song is his present and affirmation of his admiration.
Lee Clark Allen grew up surrounded by music in Little Rock Arkansas, with the local annual Blues Festival, River Festival, and Juneteenth celebrations, as well as a number of gospel events and the Motown records of his parents shaping his musical tastes. This love of music proved vital when his parents split up, and also helped him overcome a speech impediment. His EP, ‘Little Rock’, has virtually been a lifetime in the making, and with I Won’t Tell Myself a Lie making an appearance on the Empire State Mix Vol. 7, his music is already heading in the direction he’d hoped for.
‘I Won’t Tell Myself A Lie’ takes its inspiration in the difference between those we agree to date, and those we pursue. In the song Allen focuses on the latter: he sings to an indecisive lover about his intentions: a meaningful relationship with a fling on the other side. The ‘Little Rock’ EP, on the other hand, takes its inspiration from Lee’s friend Riley, who convinced him of the value of making sacrifices to follow his art.
Lee Clark Allen has been compared to the likes of modern soul singers such as Gregory Porter, Leon Bridges and Aloe Blacc, as well as legends like Marvin Gaye, Nat King Cole, and Teddy Pendergrass. His personal aim is to emulate John Legend, and not just become a talented soul singer, but also become an advocate for education.
‘I Won’t Tell Myself A Lie‘ is available now on SoundCloud, Facebook, iTunes and YouTube, and it will be available digitally and worldwide on March 23rd.

It takes a while for the resonant grip of Lee Clark Allen’s latest single Mud to sink its aural claws in, yet, once you’re there, you realise you’re in the midst of one of the most sonorously soulful R&B tracks you’ve heard in a long time.
Up and coming artist teamed up with Britney Jane to create a sumptuously slow ballad which progresses through pure vibe, evocatively organic vocals and a sultry rhythm which has carries just bring the Gospel euphoric feel to the track, his charismatically pure vocal style didn’t fail to have me hanging off his every word. The Denver, US based Indie Singer Songwriter and musician shouldn’t be hanging around on the underground if he carries on creating piously pleasing compositions such as Mud.

LEE CLARK ALLEN – RELIGION: JAZZ-INSPIRED, SOUL-DRIVEN R&B
Posted on 28th July 2018
If you like your R&B infectiously funk-addled, you might want to turn your attention to Lee Clark Allen’s Jazz inspired latest smash hit of a single Religion. It’s even made me feel a little pious.
As soon as you hit play, you can expect your speakers to blast high-octane sensual Soul which has been brought to life by the Denver based Jazz Blues artist who uses key elements from multiple genres to create something truly prodigal yet simultaneously timeless.
The concordant synergy is palpable from the instrumentals -deconstructing the arrangements almost seems criminal when the overall harmony is that ethereal. From an R&B artist you’d expect viscerally inviting vocals, which is exactly what you get from Lee Clark Allen; his upbeat, passionate vocal delivery won’t fail to leave you in awe of his charismatic vocal prowess which floats above the instrumentals.

At DSST, our staff and students support each other, push each other, and grow together - both inside and out of the classroom. We have all sorts of absolutely amazing teachers and staff members, and each member of the DSST Team has so much to offer outside of their role in our schools. We sat down with one of our teachers this week to learn more about what he does, out of the classroom. Take a look into the story of one middle school English teacher, Patrick Lee Clark...
Some may know Patrick Lee Clark as a 6th grade English teacher at the brand new DSST: Noel Middle School. But in his spare time, he goes by Lee Clark Allen, an R&B/Soul artist who performs throughout Denver, and is currently wrapping up his debut album, Little Rock.
Lee Clark Allen 092118
Growing up with parents who loved music, and enveloped by gospel, blues, jazz, R&B, soul, and pop, it’s no surprise that Lee Clark Allen grew up to become a musician. Artists like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Muddy Waters, and many more still shape his sense of melody and lyrical writing. Today, he continues to be driven by the aspiration to write, and to sing and play his music simultaneously, like John Legend. When creating music, there’s no censorship. “Whatever flows out of my heart, you will get,” he says.
Clark brings his love for music into the classroom every day, and with great results. Just like a concert, the classroom provides a stage of sorts, and there are many parallels of great musical performances to great learning experiences. Music consists of patterns, and effective classrooms have strong routines, systems, or patterns that enhance the learning experience. Likewise, strong rehearsals and band management yield great live or studio performances. Overall, the passion for both music and impacting the youth works hand in hand. “How many students get to learn and be entertained by a growing R&B/Soul artist?,” Clark asks. “They’re humbled, and I’m humbled as well.”
A natural role model for aspiring musicians and artists, Clark shares some great advice. First, you can accomplish anything lasting and positively impactful in life simply by getting back up after being told “No.” Second, embrace the wisdom of Denzel Washington. One quote that still resonates with him is “I say luck is when an opportunity comes along and you’re prepared for it.” Last, find a thank you in any and everything- there is much humility and maturity by knowing when and what to be grateful for.
In both his teaching and his music, Clark lives out the DSST Core Values intentionally and authentically. This is especially reflected in his artist name of Lee Clark Allen. Allen is his mother’s maiden name, and due to the tremendous role she played as a single mom to him and his three siblings, he chose her last name as a tribute to all single parents and women. Though at first tempted to leave out “Clark,” his biological father’s last name, including it now symbolizes the importance of keeping family together and relationships healthy. While “Allen” pushes him to be the best provider, “Clark” pushes him to develop and ruminate on all six of DSST’s Core Values, because it took all of those values in order to restore and maintain meaningful relationships.
If you missed him at Taste of Colorado earlier this month, don’t worry! Many more show dates will be popping up soon.

Lee Clark Allen possesses an impressive stage presence through his elaborate recording execution on his latest single ‘I Won’t Tell Myself A Lie’.
He sings with an element of courage and confidence within every stanza and bar that displays his adaptability within the realm of creativity. The central ideology centers around the existential love and compassion for others through a magnitude of differentiated relationships and impulsive intentions.
These compositions contain an inspirational wisdom that establishes a litmus test of purity through direct experience right into the very fabric of the songwriting itself. There are elements of retroactive soul that varnishes into the chorus room consistency of Allen’s music with several harmonies of co-ed genders expanding through the modernity of intricate sound.
Furthermore, there are rudiments of cheerfulness embedded in the subtonalities of the single and these emotions serve as a relentless ambition to master the RnB craft within a respectful demeanor. Allen’s purpose is apparent as his riveting songwriting talents infiltrate the souls of the listening audience and gives them a sense of “Why?” that so many competing artists lack or strive for.
Allen’s superior capacities are reverting RnB from the cynical nature of modern sound into the love-focused music it once was. -
Lee Clark Allen has the type of sound that immediately produces goosebumps. You can feel there’s something special in this man’s bones — he’s clearly meant to share his message. It’s a cardinal sin he’s not yet internationally recognized. We’ll chalk it up to his humble demeanor, though we know it’s only a matter of time before his talent takes him to the top. - Ellie Herring

Life hasn't always been sweet for Lee Clark Allen. Born Patrick Lee Clark, Allen grew up in Arkansas without much money, and his parents parted ways when he was only four. The now-33-year-old teacher and singer-songwriter, whose stage name includes the surnames of both of his parents, was raised by his single mother and early on turned to the church for spiritual support.
"My mother is a strong retired school bus driver. She raised two boys and a girl. We were tough on her and she was tough on us," shares Allen, whose star as an R&B and neo-soul artist is rising in Denver. "My dad lost his father early and didn't know how to be a present parent after the divorce, but fortunately we've been able to restore our relationship."
At a recent Friday night gig at the intimate Tennyson's Tap in Highland, Allen and his band did what they do best: They connected with their audience on an emotional level. Allen's music draws on his gospel roots, and it shows.
"We packed the place," he relates enthusiastically. "It was a good night. We had 100-plus people come to see us. I had individuals coming up and saying, 'I'm sorry I was crying, but your music just moved me.' I think this is the 'Jesus' year for me. I'm a believer, and I think Jesus was the most influential when he turned 33. I'm humbled to be having some success and to be able to impact people. I'm comfortable with who I am, and people are watching and being inspired. I've got a great community of supporters who encourage me, so it's my 'go for it' year."
Allen works full-time as a sixth-grade teacher at DSST during the week and also puts in time teaching English at the Community College of Aurora in the evening. He moved to the Mile High City in 2014 from New Mexico and impressively still finds time to fit in his musical calling. Hearing his story, it's not hard to understand why people would empathize with him. His artistic tenacity and dedication to improving society for those without privilege is obvious after just one conversation.
"I was a college professor at the community college in Las Cruces for about a minute, and then I did some work at New Mexico State University," Allen explains. "When classes were cut back during the recession, I struggled, and I took a job at Home Depot, where I worked my way up to get full-time employment and eventually I was able to transfer to a Home Depot in Westminster. My little brother was an engineer in Denver, so I took the opportunity to reset. I didn't want to leave New Mexico, because I had just become a feature artist in El Paso, but I felt that I should go somewhere with even more opportunity to market myself and support my art.
"I formed my band in Denver," Allen continues. "I was told that if you can get musicians to believe in your vision that it's a blessing. Between 2014 and 2016, I worked diligently on my craft to win musicians [over], and some of the guys I met in 2016 are still with me. As an educator, I've been on a journey. I became a professor because I thought I might be able to make things more equitable for students from similar economic backgrounds as mine, but teaching at colleges wasn't moving the needle. I made some impact, but my mentor said to go for middle school, because you can really inspire those students and get them excited about education and their opportunities. My students get excited about the fact that I'm Lee Clark Allen the performer."
The musical educator, who cites the work of Sam Cooke as an inspiration and is sometimes compared to artists including Leon Bridges, Daniel Caesar and John Legend, says Denver has been a boon for his artistic vision as well as his work life. His debut six-song EP, Little Rock, drops on Friday, March 29, and he and his band will mark the event with a show at the Savoy at Curtis Park.
The EP kicks off with a short but engaging cut, a 32-second cover of "This Little Light of Mine" that sets the mood for the engaging and soulful tracks that follow.
"Yeah, we take it back to church on that short cut," says Allen. "Some of that gospel music gets deep down in you. I love Sam Cooke. I listened to the actual gospel tune and then the Sam Cooke version and came up with my own take on it. I get compared to different singers, but I'm between vintage and new soul." - NICK HUTCHINSON
This is an entry in an ongoing series for 303 Magazine, which will provide a range of local album reviews. It is our intention to highlight the talents of local musicians, whether veterans to the industry or newcomers. After releasing some promising singles and recorded live performances, Lee Clark Allen has officially made his mark with his debut EP, Little Rock. Released on March 29, the EP features six soul-packed selections ranging from a shortened version of “This Little Light of Mine” to the earlier released single, “Mud.” Lee Clark Allen is a true songwriter. Each song reveals a story, lesson or emotion for the listener in a way that’s both relatable and unique. Little Rock will awaken your soul like the flowers unraveling in spring. Grab a cup of tea, let some sunshine in and enjoy this EP the next time you need a grounding and heartfelt refresh for your day.
Like most soul artists, Lee Clark Allen has a deep connection to his roots. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, there’s an immediate association between his EP title and hometown. Further reminding himself of his origins, his artist name commemorates his parents James Lee Clark and Angela Clarise Allen Clark. Born Patrick Lee Clark, Lee Clark Allen chose to combine elements from both of his parent’s names instead of using his birth name to honor the support he’s received from his family. Lee Clark Allen states, “[My parents] have supported me and bashed me to get to this point of my artistic life. This ensures that I will carry them wherever I go, despite how annoying they can be sometimes.”
Lee Clark Allen seems to be born to speak his truth. As both a teacher at a local school district and songwriter, Lee Clark Allen has a knack for sharing his message. Starting the EP with his own take on the classic “This Little Light of Mine,” Lee Clark Allen channels gospel influences for a joyously familiar yet refreshing intro.
The EP starts to gain momentum with his second selection, “I Won’t Tell Myself A Lie.” The song is an intimate slow dance that introduces you to his style with a sweet softness. His lyrics are balanced by the understated yet complimentary instruments for a selection that has a timeless element to it.
“Religion (You Are My)” starts to pick up the tempo without losing intimacy. The idea of a lover having such an impact that it’s considered religious isn’t a new concept, but Lee Clark Allen breathes freshness into the idea. With an upbeat tune to accompany his lyrics, Lee Clark Allen elevates the song with positivity and lightheartedness while still submitting to the bounds of love.
Before segueing into album favorite “Mud (Rise),” Lee Clark Allen breaks his previous mold with “The Way You Love” — a 55-second interlude-style love song (minus all the sappy-ness). The rap/spoken word poetry-style break is an energizing reminder that Lee Clark Allen’s talent isn’t bound to one genre. If you’re short on words for your next Valentine’s Day or Anniversary card, any line from “The Way You Love” should do the swoon-worthy trick.
I won’t spend too much time going into “Mud (Rise),” no words will do this song enough justice. Seriously — just give it a listen. It’s one of those songs that immediately gives you goosebumps and makes you realize there’s something big going on here. Lee Clark Allen really outdid himself both lyrically and compositionally for this single. “Mud (Rise)” is an instant classic with longevity that will shine throughout his career.
Finishing with “Lay Your Head,” Lee Clark Allen takes a weight off the listener’s shoulders for a closing song that acts as a natural dose of calm. His hypnotizing and smooth words make you feel like you’re in the company of an old friend. Before you realize it’s over, Lee Clark Allen leaves you relaxed, refreshed and a little bit closer to the truth, whatever that means to you.

Opening up with an uplifting Gospel back and forth, Lee Clark is teasing you the taste of a smooth and soulful album.
Blues and Soul spirits are overwhelming in Lee Clark Allen’s Little Rock. Released a few days ago, on 29th March 2019, the album feels full of life, organic sound, live recordings, raw passion. That Neo Soul singer-songwriter even surprises with heart-felt interludes, sang with flaws and all, such as The Way You Love ; this track recalls a taste for Spoken Word, over the soft and soothing play of the keys.
Sincerity is the word when it comes to his voice, despite the dirt and the mud, weaknesses and vulnerabilities.
Lee Clark Allen really draws on a range of influences to make feel good music that serves the listener as a form of escape, transformation into a spiritual reality, and an instrument of heartfelt expression.

Another good point with this joint, is that after listening to the whole record, you really can imagine Lee Clark Allen playing live right in front of you.
Ballads on the piano, eyes-closed singing, songstress for the back vocal, laid back tempo on the drums… all that groove sounds smooth and seducing. - Sounds so Beautiful
Lee Clark Allen will enchant your day with the single "I Will Not Tell Myself A Lie".
Lee Clark Allen is a young soul singer influenced by the Motown but also by Gregory Porter, Leon Bridges and Aloe Blacc, for the more modern side. On this title, he speaks to us of love. Note, it is still quite rare that the soul speaks to us of cassoulet even if I am sure, our singer of the day would come to we tears by telling us about cooking beans. In short, the title speaks of this ability to give us body and soul to love.
