Last week I took a trip uptown to the funky candy shop the Freak Lunchbox to meet up and interview a newly christened Pop Star. the aforementioned rising stat is no other than 17 year old Kyle McVea, a grade 12 student at Kennebecasis Valley High School. Kyle is the only East Coast member (the other members are all from the GTA) of the winning group Rebel Coast who were just crowned the winners of the YTV "The Next Star: Supergroup"! I first met and witnessed Kyle's immense talents when he was a contestant and I was a judge for Saint John Idol a few years ago on the boardwalk. It just goes to show if you work hard and have raw talent anything is possible if you want it bad enough! Here is how our chat went down.
Tell me about the whole experience!
Kyle - Um, alot of it didn't really seem like it was all happening at the time. Most of it happened last summer. It's such a surreal feeling to talk about it now. It (winning!) hasn't really sunk in.
Jeff - Being in a boy band/ Supergroup is there any internal competition for popularity? Any clash of egos on the show with the other contestants?
Kyle - no, it's been a pretty mutual experience for Rebel Coast. We are doing it all together is how everyone feels. I'm also pretty close friends with Electric Ave (runner up's on the show). I talk to them all daily.
Jeff - you guys currently have only two songs/singles: "We Are the Brave" and "Don't Stop Now". Are there plans for new recordings soon? Do you have a hand in the writing or are you just brought songs to record?
Kyle - yes, we ahve plans to record more. We are writing as well so we have our own input on the material along with other writers. i am very excited about our future. The Wall Street Journal just did an article on us!
Kyle credits his family, friends and coaches for all their support saying, "Some friends even came to Toronto for support! It was a real tear fest" he laughs. "I couldn't have done it without them" he continues when referencing the show's vocal coach and dance choreographer, Sarah Morrison and Nico Archambault, who helped him with his performance. Kyle McVea is an engaging 19 year old pop singer/songwriter from New Brunswick currently residing in Toronto. In 2014, he was a national contestant & winner on YTV’s “The NextStar: Supergroup”. They created his band, Rebel Coast, whose song "We Are the Brave" went #1 on iTunes video charts. With his group, he opened for the Pan Am Games, played at Junofest, and was featured on ETCanada as “One To Watch”.
McVea launched his solo career in 2016 as the opening act for New Brunswick’s first ever New Brunswick Day weekend celebrations, the Area 506 Festival. He was among the potential opening acts for AtlanticFest 2016 prior to its unfortunate cancellation. He's stoked to see you at his upcoming shows and share his new music which is in the works with Producer/Drummer Steve Molella of Finger Eleven.
