Toronto, Canada based artist Kristen Karma wields Pop and Dance genres to suit her needs. She has a rad look that is one part Joan Jett, one part Madonna, and one part modern day dance diva. And it’s not just her look. Kristen makes Pop Dance music that finds its origins in multiple sources.
Her new single “Try” feels like a contemporary Pop song at first. However, as the track progresses it delves into synthwave and EDM territories. The chorus is all movement, and the bridge in particular sounds primed for an extended dance remix.
Although the song ventures into some club territory, it always returns to one of its infectious hooks. Lyrically the track calls to task a former lover. Who she accuses of, “ghosting me to keep your pride.” They didn’t try.
I have an image of a stadium filled with young women, singing along in camaraderie, fists pumping to the beat.
Kristen has a number of impressive credits to her name already. She has warmed up for Akon. And she has, on multiple occasions, landed the amazingly cool gig as the entertainment for Lady Gaga’s personal after-parties.
“Try” was released on June 28th and is available on all major streaming platforms. Check it out on SoundCloud and Spotify below, and follow the links for more music from Kristen Karma. - The Static Dive
– How is it going with Kristen Karma in the music world?
KK: It’s really well thank you for asking! I’ve just released my new single Party Heroes on April 6 and the response has been amazing so far! I’m really excited to see how far I can take this.
– How was it writing and recording the single Party Heroes?
KK: I had a lot of lyrics and different ideas for Party Heroes. I had the concept and I went into the studio with a bunch of different lyrics and voice memos and really narrowed it down. From there by Producer Mark and I worked on the track and piecing it together to create this fun upbeat track!
– How important is it to have the proper artwork for singles and albums to promote online?
KK: Absolutely important! Often music can get overlooked by their artwork alone. I mean, if that doesn’t look appealing to the listener then there’s a good change it will get tossed aside. It’s always good to having something eye catching!
– Making videos must be a lot of work and still fun to do. How do you look at it?
KK: Its really should be fun. This is a complete visual representation of the artist and should be able to capture the viewer. I’m always hands on with all my videos and make I have input in everything I do.
– How many shows do you do in a year?
KK: This really depends on what else I’m doing during the year. Currently I’m in the studio recording more material for my album and my focus has shifted that way. I’m still playing shows but they won’t be as many as previous years.
– How important is it for a musician in this generation to spend time on social media?
KK: It’s important for every artist to be involved in their music career at all levels. Social Media is great in the way that it can bring people together from anywhere in the world to listen. We aren’t always able to get to different cities or countries and this gives us a chance to expand to them without the cost.
– What would be some of your main musical influences today?
KK: Hands down it would be Avril Lavigne, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, The Veronicas.
– Where do you see music in general going in 100 years from now?
KK: I see it evolving so much that there are going to be new genres of music that what can’t even fathom at the moment.

This is a fun pop single that feels and sounds vibrant. The pluck like melody is bright and the vocals are uplifting throughout the entirety of the composition. The chorus is triumphant and loud. This is a really energetic and motivating composition. This production sounds radio ready and pure. This is a great composition that I highly recommend.

Kristen Karma not only wields a certificate in Audio Engineering from Hot Sole Music, but has studied voice with Judith Rabinovitch, who has worked with the likes of Avril Lavigne and Sarah McLachlan. In 2013, Kristen Karma was selected as one of two performers to play the Lady Gaga Born This Way Ball After-party and open for Tour DJ/Lady Gaga BFF Lady Starlight in Vancouver. In 2017, she opened for Grammy Award Winner Akon in Guelph, Ontario on his Canadian Promo Tour.
Hot off the heels of her performance, Kristen was then approached and selected to play the Lady Gaga – Joanne World Tour VIP After-party once again in Vancouver after Lady Gaga’s performance at Rogers Arena. Her current single “Party Heroes” is already garnering plenty of attention.
“Party Heroes” is drenched heavily in the big blasts of club-friendly synths, a driving four-on-the-four beat, and scorching electric guitars. For all of her rock n’ roll posturing and EDM groove, by the end of it, there’s little doubting Kristen Karma’s sincerity.
She’s committed to her sound and invested in her style. It’s clear that “Party Heroes” is Karma’s most ambitious musical project to date, as well as a poignant reminder of the artist’s power to create and subsequently execute a track of this caliber. There’s nothing small about this track, and Karma sings the roof off it.
It helps that “Party Heroes” has a clutch of mighty hooks propelling Kristen Karma’s headlong charge. The track has an expansive and euphoric vibe that takes me back to the 80’s and 90’s rock and hardcore dance scenes, and will likely be a centerpiece of Karma’s live show.
There are many things that I genuinely love about this track. For one, it’s got grit. I picture rolling through the night towards the club, windows turned down and the wind in my hair, it makes me feel pretty awesome. Featuring a huge chorus, sweeping hooks, and an extended guitar riffing. One minute it’s a dance record, the next it’s stadium rock.
The lyrics are easy to shout, the beat builds into banging stomps. This is the kind of stuff that makes you want to fist pump yourself into a rapture. It’s is how a real dancefloor anthem was meant to sound like.
Kristen Karma keeps us interested and grooving along, by weaving her angst-filled vocals between the raucous synth in the choruses and the rock rhythm during the verses. It’s simply pulse-pounding and infectious, and will leave you breathless by the time it’s finished its run-time. The fire and brimstone sonics of “Party Heroes” has the potential to attract listeners from diverse genres.
With skillful vocals and a focused crossover sound, Kristen Karma does plenty to carve out her own style on “Party Heroes”. Her vibrant styling and catchy vocal lines make the song’s construction even more dynamic. Combined with nimble and skilled production, it makes for an exceptionally appealing combination. Kristen Karma is ready to make a strong impact.

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?
Kristen Karma: Avril Lavigne, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, The Veronicas, Kesha.
What do you want fans to take from your music?
Kristen: That anything is possible and to just believe. All of my music has been influenced and written by some sort of personal experience which can relate through all of my music. I never had a lot of confidence in myself when I started and had troubles believing, but that’s changed. Everything changes once you start believing.
How’s the music scene in your locale?
Kristen Karma: Toronto has a great music scene! There are so many wonderful and talented musicians here and I love finding new bands to share the stage with!
What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?
Kristen Karma: 2002 when I saw Avril Lavigne. She came to Vancouver and completely rocked her set. I can remember she called up a fan to sing with her on stage and when she got back into the audience I she stood next to me and had the biggest smile for the rest of the concert. Its moments like that that’ll stick with someone forever, and that’s what I aim create at my shows.
I love feeding off the energy of the crowd! There’s nothing like fans singing back your lyrics to you and it feels magical.
Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?
Kristen Karma: My favorite single release was for Believe. I wrote the song for my mother who was battling Cancer at the time. It got her through a lot. She’s currently going through the battle again and she plays the song over and over to remind herself that she needs to believe she will win this battle with Cancer again. This song has touched so many people and the reactions have been amazing.

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?
Kristen Karma: Lady Gaga. She’s a big inspiration to my music and I’d love to sit down and co-write with her.
What’s next for you?

Toronto, ON-based dance-pop artist Kristen Karma has unveiled her lyric video for the brand new single, “Party Heroes”.
Kristen shares on the single,
“Everyone’s been to that party where the cool kids show up late right? Well, that’s no exception here and is exactly what Party Heroes is about.
When I first moved to Toronto I decided to throw a little party at my apartment, and thought it was really going well! I had always been used to smaller low-key gatherings that didn’t get too out of hand, but I still wanted to make a good impression and make it as fun as I could. I started it rather early and had a good number of people show up. Just before it got to midnight a friend of mine showed up with her entourage, turned up the music and it really got started. All of a sudden those who were putting on their jackets to go home, put them back down. The furniture was moved, the strobes went on and before we knew it, it was well into the morning and everyone was still there!
I knew I had to write about those who show up to the party late and make it happen. The term Party Heroes stuck in my head and once I went into the studio to finish writing and recording it, it all just fell into place.”

I’d love to start something that would help fill schools with Musical Instruments. Growing up my high school was fortunate to have a few spare instruments around in which I was able to pick up and learn however, not all school programs are able to stock extras. Not just high school though, elementary and or programs that would really get the younger kids involved and able to express their musical interests early on.
As part of my series featuring the rising stars in the music industry, I had the pleasure of interviewing Electro-pop Singer Songwriter Kristen Karma. Thank you so much for joining us Kristen! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
Music has always been an important aspect of my life. When I was younger I begged my parents for a piano so I could learn and when I came home one day I was shocked and immediately fell in love with the instrument. From there I went on to join a Brass & Reed Marching Band and a Pipes & Drums bands learning about different instruments, rhythms, harmonies and how different instruments work together. I dabbled on a few different instruments in high school and when I graduated I went to school for Audio Engineering. The stage is where I felt the most comfortable though. I joined a few bands in Vancouver but after writing and arranging most of the music I decided I would take a stab at going solo. I love how I am able to share my experiences and stories with others and have them relate.
Can you share the most interesting story that occurred to you in the course of your music career?
I was working with a team a few years ago and by chance they had an act drop out of a show that was ultimately opening for Grammy Award Winner AKON. Even though my style was a little off what they were looking for, I made my case so well that I got the slot!
What are some of the most interesting or exciting projects you are working on now?
Currently I am getting ready to release my single Party Heroes, and am back in the studio with Mark Zubek to finish off my Album!
Who are some of the most interesting people you have interacted with? What was that like? Do you have any stories?
There’s always a lot of really neat and interesting people in this industry. A few years ago I was playing Lady Gaga’s Official After-Party for the Born This Way Ball and was opening the night for DJ Lady Starlight. Before my set I had a chance to meet her and had a good conversation with her. She was extremely down to early and very fashionable!
Which people in history inspire you the most? Why?
Lady Gaga has been a huge inspiration to my music. Her songwriting and performances are top notch. She’s relatable and not afraid to show who she really is. I’ve seen her grow over the years and it’s what I strive for in my career.
On the other hand, my mother is another huge inspiration. I have seen her be strong and defeat Cancer twice, and had everything you could possibly imagine thrown at her yet she still wakes up with a smile every day. She’s taught me to believe in myself even though I’ve had the roughest times or feel like giving up she been there to remind me how far I’ve come what I have yet to accomplish. She continues to inspire me every day.
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
Absolutely. In 2013 my mother was diagnosed with Cancer and I wrote her a song called “Believe” and gave it to her for her birthday. I then recorded an acoustic version of it and shot a music video which then was taken to new heights! It had reached out to the Canadian Cancer Society and it was circulated around quite a bit! A lot of listeners reached out to me on how the song had changed them. It was very inspiring.
You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. - Thrive Global

Kristen Karma “Party Heroes” Lyric Video - Medium
There are musicians that play to their strengths and this can very useful in the music business: better to do the simple stuff right than the fancy things wrong. This is something that Kristen Karma understands very well and her latest single, Party Heroes, shows her doing what she does best: an effective and accessible song that is going to appeal to a very wide demographic.
Party Heroes works so well because it has a very simple and straightforward structure: you can listen to it without having any knowledge of Kristen’s past musical endeavors and you can end up very interested with her works–it’s fun, musical and straight to the point, which allows for a very good time, just like any party song has to be.
Kristen’s vocals are solid, melodic and they are perfectly complemented with all the electro elements that are being used in the song; there are many cases in which the latter can truly affect a song’s pace and not making very fluid, but in this song it works like a charm and it allows for a very enjoyable experience as a whole.
She’s not here to reinvent the wheel and to make something new, but Kristen Karma is one of those musicians that knows what she wants to offer to her audience and does so with songs like Party Heroes, where fun, enjoyment and lots of catchiness are all ready for you.

From Toronto, Canada, Kristen Karma is a pop artist on the rise. She studied voice with Judith Rabinovitch ( coach for Avril Lavigne and Sarah McLachlan) and obtained a certificate in Audio Engineering from Hot Sole Music. Kristen was even handed a Gold Award by HRH Prince Edward! In 2013, Kristen performed in the Lady Gaga Born This Way Ball After-Party and open for Tour DJ/Lady Gaga BFF Lady Starlight in Vancouver. With rave reviews from her performance, she received the opportunity to work with lil’Jon on her single “Sirens.” Kristen has now teamed up with Mark Zubek (Zedd Records) on her latest hit single, ‘Party Heroes’.
Party Heroes, which was co-written by Kristen Karmazinuk and Mark Zubek, is a hard pulsing song with great dance chart potential. "Party Heroes" opens with a 16-bar attention-grabbing intro that rocks, grooves, pulsates and pounds on electronic synth with a nice thick bass and clapping percussion sounds establishing a strong dance vibe. Kristen starts singing with the perfect touch of confidence and attitude, “Back to the walls like you’re back in school. No one makes a sound afraid to break the rules.” The impression is that Kristen herself is not afraid to break the rules. Her tone is crisp and clear, intentional, easily rising above the professional quality production and mix.
The first two versus set up the scene. This could be club or a party. There are just a few people there. Nothing is happening yet, but wait....the pre-chorus arrives and the party changes! “Time to get dirty, get a little flirty, gonna five you what you need.” The song then breaks into the contagious chorus with some hard hitting beats and a short break in sound that sets up the breath before the chorus kicks in, “Bust through the doors, here to save the day. Rescue our souls and show us the way. We show up late and we’re bringing the crowd. Look out, we’re coming and it’s gonna get loud.” At this point, the song is in full gear.
Throughout the track, the arrangement is full of electronic dance elements that are layered creating interesting textures and sounds that you can lose yourself in. In the bridge section, Kristen’s sings, “P-P-P Party , P-P-P Party Heroes” with some fun rhythmic articulations. Kristen’s style is influenced by Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato and you can hear those music heroes in her music. Towards the end, the song moves into a complete dance jam that you can break a sweat to taking the energy all the way to the very end until a quick fade-out dims the lights.
"Party Heroes" pays tribute to the people who set the trends, get the party going and light up the night. In this case, the party is starting and the party hero is Kristen Karma as she lights up the stage with her neon pink microphone in hand and delivers songs that have fun lyrics, boundless energy, contagious melodies, wicked pulsing beats and grooves sung with confident vocals. Kristen’s music keeps things current, fresh, alive and exciting. Kristen Karma is currently back in the studio working on new singles to be released in 2017. Kristen Karma had performed locally for numerous years, garnering success throughout Vancouver and gaining opportunities such as opening for DJ Lady Starlight at the official Lady Gaga Afterparty during the 2013 Born This Way Ball Tour, before relocating to Toronto, Ontario to further her musical career. Karma also has a dedicated following online, world-wide.
“Believe” is a heart-felt, positive, pop ballad. Written in connection to the Canadian Cancer Society, lyrically, this song has the ability to reach just about everyone, young and old, on an emotional level. Cancer is no stranger in the lives of many, and this song helps to bring about a positive outlook on a potentially sad situation. It teaches one to believe, and that standing together, there are no sad moments, simply just moments to remember and cherish forever.
Throughout the song, there are delicate harmonies and melodies placed strategically which keeps the song moving and the ear entertained. The addition of a feature vocalist (Toronto artist, Kazz), adds a lot of depth to the over all sound of the track, as does the addition of extra piano and string accompaniment by the talented, Kate Unrau.
The over all mix of the song, technically, was well done. The levels of the instrumentation paired well with that of Karma’s vocals. However, I wish I could have heard Kazz a little higher, or at least, clearer in the mix when it came to the additional background vocals and harmonies in the first minute and thirty seconds of the song. The latter half showcases that there are two separate voices much more clearly than the first half. When Kazz joined in for the feature vocal, you could hear clearly that he has a beautiful voice. One which carried the melodies of the song whimsically. Pairing Kristen Karma and Kazz together to create this acoustic rendition of “Believe” was a great choice. The song is strong messaged, beautifully written, and will touch the hearts of many.
To accompany the single for “Believe,” Kristen Karma released a music video, now with over 23,000 views on YouTube. The video was shot artfully, in black and white, focusing mainly around Karma in varying shots from singing to playing the piano, as well as features from Kazz and Kate Unrau. It also showcased a beautiful storyline in the b-roll of the video that I’ll let you watch for yourself.
The team behind the production of this single and music video did a really good job of capturing the essence of what Kristen Karma wrote. The credits are as follows:
Music and Lyrics: Kristen Karma
Vocals and additional lyrics: Kazz (FACEBOOK)
Strings and additional piano: Kate Unrau
Audio Engineer: Scotty Komer
Videographer: Deighton Goode
Make-up Artist: Ashley Fernandes

Kristen Karma is taking control of her own destiny with a Gold Award in one hand (personally given to her by HRH Prince Edward in 2009) and a black corset in the other. She effortlessly walks the line between an organized and responsibly rehearsed persona who has spent years studying the theory behind her music, and her alter ego who cannot refrain from gallivanting all over the stage during her pop/electronic performances. Karma not only wields a certificate in Audio Engineering from Hot Sole Music, but has studied voice with Judith Rabinovitch, who has worked with the likes of Avril Lavigne and Sarah McLachlan.
Here’s a fun fact you might not know.
In 2013, Kristen Karma was selected as one of two performers to play the Lady Gaga Born This Way Ball After-party and open for Tour DJ/Lady Gaga BFF Lady Starlight in Vancouver. With rave reviews from her performance, she then went on to work with lil’Jon on her single Sirens.
You can read that in two ways. Intimidation or talent. Worthy or ‘sounds like she’ll do just fine on her own’. And then again, with an industry clammering to find the next person to hold the torch for “Overnight Success” this funky candidate definitely got her name on the list.
I guess the rest reads up to you.
So lets press play on this sound.
KristenKarma_Mod Club Still
A Katie Perry Kaleidoscopic Next Fling. Someone who could easily share a festival stage with Madonna, Gaga, Sia, Perry and maybe even Aguirella. She’s got that blend of punk, sass, guts, power, commerciality, and by the sounds of this track a thick skin. In an industry where it’s easy to rock a sound, carving out her own IBIZA slice of party scene is where the real work begins. The good thing is she’s got a track with that name and it’s on blast.
It’s fresh enough to cast its own vote and relatable to what sells. A sneaky tactic. Much like I imagine this Ninja to be. And that’s part of her talent. Trendspotting, adaptability, and a pulse. “Party Heroes” is that quirky whiplashing sound the fills a gap in the industry that no longer has the attitude of Pink or the playfulness of No Doubt.
Japan is going to love her.
Parting fact:
In 2017, she opened for Grammy Award Winner Akon in Guelph, Ontario on his Canadian Promo Tour. Hot off the heels of her performance, Kristen was then approached and selected to play the Lady Gaga – Joanne World Tour VIP After-party once again in Vancouver after Lady Gaga’s performance at Rogers Arena.

Parting thoughts.
An electrical storm of playful kaleidoscopic proportions. There’s something very Alice in Wonderland about the whole thing. And there’s always room for fantasy. With punk. To bite. - Red Carpet Living
This is a rare sounding album full of catchy beats, driving electric guitars, and great vocals that spill emotion! Kristen Karma offers a special musical blend of Power-Pop and Eclectic Rock designed to grab the attention of listeners from almost any age group. I would recommend keeping an eye on this unique Artist, who appears to be on the move taking listeners to a 'Destination Unknown'! - Terrance Schemansky (3000 Records)
"Kristen Karma is definitely on the cutting edge of Vancouver’s modern pop scene and I can see her taking her sound to the international stage within months. Songs like “Maybe Someday” and “Bustin’ Out” are teaming with infectious melodies and danceable grooves sure to get her fans onto the dance floor. It’s tough being an artist in today’s music industry, but Kristen has what it takes to weather the storm and her natural talent for crafting concise, immediately hummable edgy pop tunes will ensure her success for years to come." - Alex Whitcombe, President (Blackstream Records)
Kristen Karma: “Destination Unknown”
Kristen Karma redefines pop music with her edgy and well thought out lyrics. Thats the reason her music always seems to strike a cord with me. Some people say some of Kristen’s influences are from artists such as Avril Lavigne and Lady Gaga. When I listen to the songs “The Best In Me” as well as “Bustin’ Out” I think Kristen resembles a mix of Belinda Carlisle (Lead singer of the pop, rock/new wave band The Go Go’s). Another artist she resembles is Alanis Morissette which gives her that edge - DJ Spencer Williams

A Night With Kristen Karma
Mesmerising vocals, Powerful lyrics and a stellar stage presence; Kristen Karma is truly “Bustin Out!” The audience found Karma “Irresistible.” From the moment she stepped out on stage, we all knew we were in for a good show. Kristen stood in front of a neon pink microphone stand. To her left was her guitarist and behind her the drummer; who had exactly 24 hours to learn all the material. When she starts singing the audience seemed to get lost in her words. Words like “it’s exactly what you need,” put the crowd under a spell. Karma [does it her way] and insist that [she’s alright on her own], and we most certainly agree.
Her music is pop rock. In songs like ‘Bustin Out’ and ‘Something More’ the drums add to the songs liveliness. Her enthusiastic performance included jumping around on stage and engaging the crowd with every move. Karma knows how to connect with her audience by writing about topics that can really hit home. Songs like “Goodbye” which pays tribute to her Grandfather, left the crowd silent as we reflected on our own losses.
She plays as if it’s her last time she’s ever going to be playing. With out even trying she gives everything she’s got; leaves her blood sweat and tears on the stage. She turns pop punk songs into hits without being the next Britney Spears.
No matter if she’s rocking out in front of a neon microphone or sitting behind the piano Karma always seems to stay entertaining. She gave a lasting impression that will forever be a memory I will always cherish. - DJ Spencer Williams
What goes around, comes around. Sound familiar? That would be because everyone and their dogs have heard of, or recognize, the word Karma. So, naturally, local artist Kristen Karma shares the same fate! This young pop/rock artist has a strong following both on Facebook, with 2223 likes, and on Twitter, with 839 followers! (I WISH I had a crazy fan group like that! Wow.) Some of Karma's musical influences, such as Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry, and the Veronicas, really shine through on her debut 6-song EP, "Destination Unknown."
The first track on the EP is titled, "The Best In Me." Though it's not the best song on the album, it has cute pop vocals, a tight backtrack, and simple but catchy lyrics and melody. The second track is "Bustin' Out." There are strong keys/synths, mixed well with various other instruments to create a great, fun track to dance too. The topic of the song is very relatable, which is something that hooks in the listeners. Though I must say, while all the right ideas are there instrumentally, the vocals need more edge. They're just a tad too soft sounding. Almost like Hilary Duff singing along to an Avril Lavigne track. Not to say it sounds bad in the least, I like it for sure, it would just be that much better with some edge!
The third track is BY FAR the favourite on the EP here at Hammer Records. It's titled, "Maybe Someday." This song has such passion, all the right edge, great emotion, a strong beat, and great vocal effects all throughout - though especially in the chorus! The use of "gang vocals" really adds to the overall sound as well. I really envision this song on a teen-movie soundtrack. It just sounds so sick!!! A definite must-listen!
The fourth track is "Breakaway." Not to be confused with the Kelly Clarkson song, this one has more of a Daughtry vibe. The lyrics are right to the point, which really delivers the message of the song, and there's a nice showcasing of the guitar in the "breakdown" between vocals. There's not much else to say about this track except, again, I can see this being on a movie soundtrack.
The fifth track, titled, "Something More," isn't really giving us all that much more to listen to. A great track, but not as strong as the other five on the album. The gang vocals weren't as strong as in previous songs, and the sound wasn't "as there" over all. Lyrically though, it's fantastic. I really dug the lyrics.
Now, the last song! It is conveniently called, "Goodbye." I wonder if it was placed at the end for that reason? Regardless, it's clever. This song has cute lyrics, and a really strong chorus all around. The soft vocal work works really well in the verses, and there are some fantastic vocal runs throughout the song. It's a strong ending to a fun, dance-y album. One everyone should get there hands on! If not, you never know when karma will come around and get ya!

A Good Dose Of Karma
I managed to catch up with up and coming solo pop artist, Kristen Karma, to learn more about what lead her down her musical path as well as what lies in the future.
James: Tell me about how you came to love music?
Kristen: I came home one day from elementary school and my parents had surprised my siblings and i with a piano. It was an instant connection. It felt so natural to play from the heart. I have never regretted it since!
J: Have you ever taken lessons? Or just learnt from ear?
K: The first couple of months i was learning from a book. I eventually started to take lessons and testing with The Royal Conservatory of Music. It gave me my basics with scales and chords. As i advanced through the grades I found it easier to pick out my favorite tunes and learn on the piano by ear.
J: What was one of your favorite songs to play back when you were learning?
K: My Immortal By Evanescence. I would play it non-stop!
J: Same! Great song. Did you sing when you played or did that come later?
K: That came much later. I actually didn't write my first full complete song until the summer of 2009. I was shy and didn't really sing in front of anyone but myself.
J: Hard to imagine you being shy after seeing you on stage! What made you decide to start writing your own songs?
K: I was in a couple of bands before i went solo. Each band I was in I was more involved in the song writing process. I did take a class in highschool on music composition but still had no idea how to put my thoughts into music. So with the last band I was in, we began co-writing and I was also arranging songs. I felt it just clicked. I took a trip to the UK in 2009 with one of my best friends and she said "Why don't you just go solo? You have the talent to write hit songs!" Thus, it began.
J: So is that how your first album worked out? Who did you write with?
K: I wrote the song called Breakaway on piano and put it up as a demo on myspace. As i was writing Goodbye I started looking around at producers. I found Dave Thompson of Digital Underdog Productions. We met a few times then started working on those two plus Bustin'Out. It was originally suppose to just be a couple of songs, but with every song I just got so much better, so I decided to make the EP.
J: Did you and him come up with all the music?
K: I came up with demos done in Garage Band and Protools. It was mainly just synth, drums and piano with a rough cut of my vocals. He added the guitar and harmonies as well as a few other things to create fantastic mixes to the songs. I was there every step of the way to make sure they turned out exactly like what i heard in my Head. We really connect and work well as a team. I am truly blessed to have worked with such a great producer!
J: Tell me about any upcoming shows?
K: Yes! I am very excited for the upcoming shows! Last year i was sort of playing it by ear and how things were done. I ahd a lot of things put together, but was still missing key elements of my show. This year i have taken the bull by the horns. It is a high energy show with catchy tunes, that WILL have you dancing.
J: Now one of the biggest downfalls with pop music around Vancouver is its all done with a backing track or prerecorded music. Do you do this?
K: Ive got a show at the Celler Nightclub on May 20th and The Media Club on June 8th. Both shows are with wicked musicians from Vancouver. I can't wait to share the stage with them. It's always been something to me to have live musicians. You can feed right off their energy on stage. Plus it makes the show that much better to watch!
J: Any funny stories happen at one of your shows?
K: The first show I ever played was at the Media Club last year. I opened the show for this fashion show that was going on. So we decided to end the set with the song Bustin'Out. Well, as we were playing the last song all these girls came out with their bustiers on to model them. Wasn't really planned to play the last song with models "bustin out" of their bustiers. *laughs* It took a while to live that one down.
J: Any last words to our readers?
K: If you want it, and visualize it, what is stopping you from taking it? Don't take no for an answer. Follow what's in your heart. Exciting things are going down the upcoming shows. Hope you can make it out! It's all about having a blast and partying to some wicked music!

Kristen Karma’s debut EP “Destination Unknown” caught me off guard; we had no idea what to expect upon spinning the album. Since her music is deemed Pop/Rock, we were surprised when Kristen Karma’s tunes seemed to be more accurately described by synthpop with rock overtones. With the mixing of two very distinct genres, does the EP create a unique sound, or does it not truly succeed at fulfilling either audience’s needs?
The synthpop/rock mashup has its moments throughout the EP. However, it is a case example of why a song order matters. With independent artists being unable to rely on music networks and radio stations to push certain songs for them, they ultimately have to carefully consider the order of their EP – you need to be able to hook someone from the first song. Unfortunately, while the album had two great hooks to start the album, “The Best In Me” and “Bustin’ Out”, the albums energy quickly tapered off.
These two songs on the EP are easily described as catchy, synthpop – songs that you will find yourself awkwardly humming at all those boring formal dinners. It was a smart choice of order too; “Bustin’ Out”, being catchier than the debut song, makes it a really hard case for the listener to turn off. However, to stop an audience from questioning Kristen Karma as a one-trick pony, she busts out slower melodies.
For example, “Breakaway” strives to be a calm, iconic anthem. It removes the listener from the adrenaline rush of the first two songs, and allows them to take a breather and relax. It ultimately builds the album to be a lot more dynamic to listen to, and will make an audience raiser their lighters.
Unfortunately, the EP never brought us back out of the slow rut. The EP’s impact slowly tapers off like it’s trying to slowly work you into a calm sleep. By the time the last song closes, the listener is left with a bland taste in their mouth; there is not a closing song that reminds the reader who Kristen Karma is. Ultimately, the EP starts off strong, but by the end, it is left forgettable by time. Even with catchy choruses and a strong synthesized melody, the strong start is lost by the repetitive slow ending.
The EP definitely shows the potential that Kristen Karma has. She understands how to make melodies that hook listeners with her interesting synthpop tunes. While the dynamic is welcomed, she never pulls her audience back onto your upbeat melodies.

Destination Unknown was provided to us for review by Kristen Karma. The album was listened to back-to-back, in order, several times, in one sitting. The score is based on our short description based on our Review Scale.
7.0/7.5 – Good
Sure, there are some issues, but the overall experience is still good enough to
recommend. Maybe it lacks ambition or it’s repetitive, but we had fun with it
nevertheless and think you will too. - Overmined

Fans of Lights, and Selena Gomez will probably appreciate the positive messages in the pop songs of Vancouver based artist Kristen Karma. Another ‘Digital Underdog’ alumni.
The disc starts off with tracks ‘Best in me’ and ‘Bustin out’ two up tempo pop/dance ditty’s with active synths and guitars. These will most certainly have a strong appeal with a younger audience. According to Kristens MySpace the EP’s single ‘Bustin Out’ is already a hit on satellite and college radio. She seems to be ‘Bustin Out’ all over the place.
‘Destination Unknown’ doesn’t really connect until track four ‘Breakaway’. Things are taken back a notch and the production has a more orchestral tone. The more introspective mood is a far better fit for Kristen’s youthful voice which takes flight in this personal song. The winning formula is once again repeated in the final offering ‘Goodbye’ which is the most ipod worthy and dynamic song on the album, showcasing a chirpy pop chorus hook.
No matter what, Kristen is on the right track for an indie pop/rock artist. It will be interesting to see what she does next.

Originally from Vancouver, now based in Toronto, Kristen Karma is keeping busy. She recently released her single, “Party Heroes”, which will no doubt have you on your feet with its upbeat electronic beat. Kristen has been performing since a very young age, she comments,
“Before the age of five, I would gravitate to the stage no matter who was playing. If I could, I would get up on stage and dance with the singers.”
Check out the single below, and while you’re dancing in your chair, find out more about Kristen in our segment of Five Questions With!
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hello, my name is Kristen Karma! I am a Pop Artist from Vancouver who now resides in Toronto. I’ve been lucky enough to play Lady Gaga’s Official After-Parties in Vancouver for her Born This Way Ball (2013) and Joanne (2017) World Tour and had the pleasure of opening for Grammy Award Winner AKON on his Guelph Stop in 2017.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
My musical style is a blend of catchy pop hooks with rock style riffs and dance beats. Influences can be heard from Lady Gaga, Avril Lavigne, The Veronicas, Katy Perry, and Kesha throughout my music.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
Yes! I will be headlining the Cameron House (Back Room) on March 31 with an amazing all-female lineup and then I’ll be headlining the Cavern Bar on May 19. The shows are super energetic and I usually add in something new and unique to each show. Each show is different with a twist that is only performed live. Dates for upcoming shows can be seen on my Facebook or Website!
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
That would have to be Party Heroes! It’s a fun upbeat and quirky song with some wicked guitar solos thrown in all about showing up to the Party, bringing the crowd and just having the time of our lives. I’ll be shooting the Music Video for it in May!
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
There is so much talent in Canada! Avril Lavigne, LIGHTS, Shawn Hook, Michael Buble… <3 - Jenna Melanson - Canadian Beats
Electro-pop artist Kristen Karma was drawn to the stage at an early age, once getting up on stage to dance with the singers. However, she would spend her formative years in the world of ballet but would become discouraged when told she was too tall. It would be later when Kristen participated in military marching bands, the Air Cadets, and The Royal Conservatory of Music that these experiences would influence her to pursue a music career.
Kristen would go on to complete her skills as a musician, combining the technical and musical skills she learned from her time in the military bands and the music conservatory with her certification from Hot Sole Music in audio engineering. She also improved her voice with Vancouver vocal coach Judith Rabinovitch, who has worked with Avril Lavigne and Sarah McLachlan.
In 2013 she was selected as one of two performers to open for Tour DJ/Lady Gaga BFF Lady Starlight at the Lady Gaga Born This Way Ball After-party. Her performance garnered rave reviews and as a result, Kristen would go on to work with Lil Jon on her single, Sirens. In 2017, Kristen was selected to perform at Lady Gaga’s Joanne World Tour VIP After-Party in Vancouver. That same year, she opened for Grammy award-winning Akron in Ontario on his Canadian Promo Tour.
Kristen teamed up with renowned producer Mark Zubek for her current single, the electronic/pop “Party Heroes” released in April. It entered the Canadian iTunes Pop Charts Top 20, reaching #17 at that time. The high energy party song combines powerful guitar solos with driving dance beats and catchy melodies guaranteed to make you want to get up and move.
Currently, Kristen is finishing her EP/Album and is also in the studio working on new music.
I recently interviewed Kristen via email about her new single, opening for Akon on his tour, performing at both of Lady Gaga’s After Party events, winning a Gold Award, working with renowned producer Mark Zubek and much more.
Congratulations on your new hit single, “Party Heroes”. What is the concept/theme?
I was hosting a party and at about 11-11:30 pm it started to die down. Just as a few of my friends were ready to leave, I had a friend of mine show up with her entourage. She turned up the music, brought more food and drinks and we just kept the party going! Before anyone knew it, it was 4-5am and we were still having a great time!
What do you want listeners to take away from the song?
Party Heroes is a feel-good, get-up-and-dance type of party song. It’s got driving dance beats combined with epic guitar solos and catchy melodies that bring it together for this high energy song.
I want the listeners to be able to put this song on and just have fun with it!
What was it like working with Mark Zubek, a renowned producer and jazz musician?
It’s been an absolute pleasure working with Mark. We’ve done a few songs together now and just watching him bring my demos and songs to life is enlightening. Sometimes I think he knows what I’m trying to accomplish before I even get a chance to voice it! He’s always asking for input on what he’s doing which never makes me feel like I’m losing control of my vision for the song. Plus! The songs always come out better than I could have imagined it!
Explain your production process.
I create my demo on my own and I’ll send it over to him and reference some songs (for beats, or sounds) that I’d like to try and incorporate. He takes that and we build the song together. From there its adding vocals and everything else and giving it a good mix!
You hold a certificate in Audio Engineering from Hot Sole Music. How has it affected your approach to recording and production of your music?
I wanted to learn more about how the music process was from behind the scenes. I had started writing a few demos and this gave me the tools to understand how to manipulate and mold different sounds into different arrangements. Now when I head into the studio I have more time to spend on instrumentation and sounds rather than the arrangements. It gives me time to be able to play around with the demos on an entirely new level and be able to communicate better in the studio.
Tell us more about being selected and performing for Lady Gaga’s Official After Party for the 2017 Joanne World Tour and opening for DJ Lady Starlight at Lady Gaga’s the Born This Way Tour 2013. What were these experiences like? Do you have a favorite moment or memory?
I saw the company that was putting on Lady Gaga’s Official After Party for the Born This Way Ball in 2013 and I just knew I had to play it. I emailed the coordinator and spoke to him on Social Media and made sure that he had a chance to listen to my music. I then followed up a few times and eventually got slotted to open up the night! The headliner of the night was Lady Gaga’s Tour Opener and BFF DJ Lady Starlight which was pretty neat. In 2017
I got the chance to play the After Party for the Joanne World Tour and was the sole music performer for the night!
As for the best moment of the night, it would have to be right at the start. I had my band play an intro and I had my back facing the crowd. There wasn’t anyone but a few friends in front of the stage. All of a sudden when I turned around there were photographers and videographers and fans right in front of the stage. It was packed!
What was it like to open for AKON on his Guelph stop on his 2017 Canadian Promo tour? How did you get that opportunity?
Akon is extremely humble and down to earth. All the performers got to meet him and speak to him after the show! The show was jam-packed and had such a high energy audience! It was cool to be apart of his show. As for getting the gig, I was working with a company that had another artist slotted in and they couldn’t do it. So I volunteered and made a case for why I should perform and ultimately got the spot!
You studied ballet in your formative years. Why did you not pursue a dance career?
When I was younger I was told that I’d be too tall to be a ballerina and that all the guys I’d dance with would be too short. Unfortunately, at that young age, I was discouraged and went on to pursue other things instead of fighting for what I wanted.
Tell us more about your experiences with the Air Cadets, military marching bands, and The Royal Conservatory of Music. Did these influence or lead you toward a music career?
100% yes. I got a lot of my technical skills from the Royal Conservatory of Music. The arrangements and how everything worked together was learned through my time in the Military Marching Bands (Brass & Reed/Pipes & Drums).
Everything worked together in conjunction with my schooling in Audio Engineering to round my skills as a musician.
Why did you study voice with Judith Rabinovitch, who has worked with Avril Lavigne and Sarah McLachlan? What did you take away from working with her?
Judith was my vocal coach when I was living in Vancouver. She’s quite a staple in the Vancouver Music Scene as a Vocal Coach, and I knew if I wanted to improve and grow that she was the coach for me. I had tried other coaches they didn’t have the same passion behind their teaching. I learned techniques and improved my skills and as a result, there was a drastic improvement from when I first started.
What did you win the Gold Award for in 2009? Why was it personally awarded to you by HRH Prince Edward? How did you feel about winning it?
The Gold Award was apart of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. It’s a youth award program founded in the United Kingdom in 1956 by Prince Philip (Duke of Edinburgh) which promotes physical fitness, good citizenship, new skills and overall improving one’s self. There are three levels and the Gold Award is presented by a member of the Royal Family. In my case, it was HRH Prince Edward who had given me the Award.
In a press release, it cites you spent years studying the theory behind your music. Can you expound on that?
I’ve been watching and taking notes of my favourite musicians and performers and how they are on stage. I try and replicate (on my level) different things and incorporate things into my stage show.
When it comes to the music I studied different songs and what makes them stand the test of time.
What instrumentation, what they have incorporated, lyrics, messages, and flow. I’ve taken the best parts of what I like and saw I can improve the songs that I write.
At an early age, you were drawn to the stage and when you could, you got up on stage to dance with the singers. Who were these singers? How were you able to join them on stage?
Ha! So my parents tell me this story all the time that when I was younger we were attending a Canada Day Celebration (Salmon Festival) and at the end of the parade, there was a stage set up with a local band performing. That’s where I got up on the stage and started dancing. One of them must have helped me on the stage!
How do you think women (artists, audio engineers, producers, etc.) can be better supported in the indie music industry?
Overall there is a lack of females working on the technical side of things in the music industry. More women should get their hands on and educate themselves as much as possible about what goes on behind the scenes. They should be able to speak their mind and be confident about it. As for artists, females are over-sexualized in this industry.
They should comfortable and confident with the music they are creating. It should be about the music first and less about the looks. Everyone should be supporting each other.
What projects do you have planned for the rest of this year?
Currently, I’m in the studio working on some new music. I’m working toward finishing up my EP/Album!
What are your plans for performances/shows for 2019?
I currently have a show booked for July 27 at the Supermarket in Toronto! We’ve got a great line up for the night! - Indie Music Women

Her brand new single “Dear John” released on October 19 is a heartwarming, and brilliantly crafted song that is sure to tug on the heartstrings. With it already winning Best International Song at the American Tracks Music Awards in Los Angeles, reaching #35 on the iTunes Canada Pop Charts, and placing in several International Film Festivals. Kristen features up-and-coming artist Marian Hanna and rap artist Mr ATP for a well-rounded and thematic song that is sure to make an impact on any listener who has lost a loved one.
Kristen has already teamed up with with Mark Zubek (Zedd Records) to bring you the quirky fun pop single, ‘Party Heroes’ which peaked on the iTunes Canada Chart (#17), and ‘Try’ (Top 30 iTunes Canada Pop Chart (#27), Top 100 iTunes Canada Chart (All Genres at #69) – Highest Debut of the Day for June 29, 2019).
Her previous EP, Destination Unknown, garnered critical success with numerous positive reviews, but Karma’s recordings are far from her only facet that is gaining positive attention from the press. Kristen Karma lives for the stage, and it shows. Karma herself recounts stories of being drawn to the stage from an early age, saying, “Before the age of five, I would gravitate to the stage no matter who was playing. If I could, I would get up on stage and dance with the singers.” It is this kind of driven and simultaneously care-free attitude that has propelled Kristen Karma deeper and deeper into a professional career in music.
Karma continues to wow audiences with her energetic live performances, and she does it all with a neon pink microphone in hand.
