When you hear a new artist for the first time, there is always some facet or characteristic that you’ll initially pick up on. With Kipyn Martin it’s undoubtedly her voice, an instrument of unrefined purity, which is wonderfully suited to her blues based folk and Americana material. She’s honed her style by extensively touring with her mentor, Pops Walker, throughout Western and Northern Virginia, and playing many gigs in her current hometown of Washington DC. In between she’s received a Master of Music degree in composition from Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, VA.
From what I can ascertain, “Undercover Muse” is Martin’s debut collection, and she opens her account with the title track, a folk rocker that somehow connects Sandy Denny period Fairports with acoustic Grateful Dead. It’s a beautiful combination of styles, and leads into the equally lovely “Orchard”. Martin’s voice is just captivating, and engulfs the listener in warm, complex tones. Musically things are kept quite simple with acoustic guitars providing the majority of the backing, allowing Martin’s voice and her songs to take centre-stage. Perhaps my favourite is “Nightbird” – it’s slow jazz arrangement seeps into the bones, and sticks around the subconscious long after the album has finished.

Kipyn Martin is an emerging Mid-Atlantic singer/songwriter whose
roots sink into the banks of the Shenandoah River. Her voice is gathering a
reputation in the region, hailed by listeners as "an instrument of unrefined
purity" (Tony S.- Leicester Bangs) and "the most pure voice I've ever heard" (Karin Fuller- The Charleston Gazette). She currently plays festival stages in
Virginia and Maryland and delights audiences at vineyards, coffeehouses, and
house concerts throughout the Shenandoah Valley.
In February 2013 Kipyn celebrated the release of her debut album, Undercover
Muse. Offering an authentic representation of Kipyns live
performances, Undercover Muse is a strictly acoustic project. "Martin's voice is just captivating, and engulfs the listener in warm, complex
tones," acclaims Tony S. of Leicester
Bangs. Recently Kipyn performed several showcases at the 2013
Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) Conference in New York.
Placing in the NewSong Academy Songwriting Competition inspired Kipyn to pursue
a Master of Music degree which she attained from Shenandoah Conservatory in
2012. Her song "Nightbird" earned a gold award as well as the Director's Choice Award in the 2013 Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest. Kipyn also received international distinction in the 2013 UK Song Contest
when "I Believe in You" from Undercover Muse earned
a semi-finalist rating. An honesty and vitality of voice make this woman a
performing artist not to be missed.
