Backed by a classic Curtis Mayfield sample, Memphis recording artist turned social activist Marco Pavé unloads the latest leak from his forthcoming Perception EP. “Black Tux”, produced by frequent collaborator Kenny Wayne, is a soulful banger that captures Marco’s both personal and political frustrations. With a declarative hook that states, “please understand the basics/this black tux costs cheaper at Macy’s/put us in the basement deeper than Anne Frank/seek to keep us down but this crown no erasing.”, it’s very clear that Pavé isn’t limiting his teachings to the classroom.

Marco Pavé borrows the emotive instrumentation of Curtis Mayfield’s “We Who Are Darker Than Blue” to add more weight to his impassioned narrative on “Black Tux.”
Produced by Kenny Wayne, the song compares the struggles of an artist in today’s day and age to the deeper rooted struggle of communities in color, which we can still see to this day.

MEMPHIS NATIVE MARCO PAVÉ GETS CLASSY ON “BLACK TUX” - The Source
"I wrote Black Tux shortly after the murder of Mike Brown. For me, Black Tux is a metaphor for how America views black bodies and treat black lives. I considered it my offering to the Black Lives Matter movement, and I hope that it can go down in history as one of the great protest songs that are coming out around this time." -

Memphis artist Marco Pavé drops off his new single “Black Tux” featuring production by Kenny Wayne. The record is inspired by 70’s soul and samples Curtis Mayfield‘s “We Who Are Darker Than Blue.” Marco‘s raps are nothing short of phenomenal and the overall sound is reminiscent to what we got from Kanye West on his first two albums, College Dropout and Late Registration. Marco Pavé protests with his rhymes and represents black youth on the track, which he says is in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and a metaphor for how America views black bodies and treats black lives. That being said, Black Tux is worth the listen and Marco Pavé is worth your time.

Astoundingly good sonically, definitely a set of anthems for self-inspiration and refreshingly celebrates the pillars of Hip-Hop in its storytelling. Production was cleverly interspersed with in your face commentary type skits which synched perfectly with the intervals on the track. Marcos Pavé is a problem…a great one. Looking forward to his continued contributions to the culture. - Jerry Doby

Bio
Marco Pavé is Project Pat meets KRS-One, spitting an urban country consciousness with a confidence that could only emerge from coming of age as a Muslim millennial in North Memphis. As a rapper and songwriter, Marco Pavé appeals to a diversity of rap enthusiasts, from purists to radio lovers to hipsters, with a soulful style of hip-hop storytelling and community engagement that appeals to racially and geographically diverse millennial audiences. Marco’s lyrics are often painting pictures with his songs. Marco’s content is abundant yet both understandable and relevant, speaking on topics fans would agree are distressing and all too common in the life of a person his age in today’s society, using these experiences to encourage others like him to persevere. As a sought-after public speaker in community and university contexts, he lectures on hip-hop and conducts workshops on hip-hop and social justice.
Marco Pavé has been building a solid profile for a couple years now. In 2014, he released his first mixtape, Obscure Reality, which was positively reviewed on several blogs. Based on his incredible live performances and the early positive reception of his mixtape, he was invited to perform at SXSW. Next, he was invited to Los Angeles to record an EP with Grammy-nominated producer Haskel Jackson, Memphis native and prolific Grammy-winning producer Carlos Broady, and Grammy-winning engineer James Hunt. His most loyal fans even donated over $3,000 to send Marco to LA to record this project.
Radio Rahim Music released Marco’s current project, the EP Perception, in November 2015. With this release Pavé has gained attention from nationally recognized online publications such as The Source, Soul Train, AllHipHop, and more. Hip Hop scholar Mark Anthony Neal has given Marco the seal of approval through his blog, NewBlackMan. Beyond Internet buzz, Pavé has made a huge debut and impact on college radio. Perception debuted at #24 on the College Music Journal (CMJ) charts and reached the #4 position by its third week. Over 90 stations from Canada to the USA have picked up the EP. Perception was also named one of the top ten albums in Memphis music by their paper of record, The Commercial Appeal.
“Pursuing this goal of making music be my full time career, there were many many doubts that people placed on me. I turned all that into power.”
— Marco Pavé
Marco’s rap bona fides are bolstered by his community activist work. He is involved in a number of community improvement initiatives, from literacy campaigns to calls for neighborhood investment. Marco created “Books on Beale,” an annual benefit concert that promotes literacy in Memphis and surrounding areas. 2013’s concert featured over a dozen local acts and brought together over $20,000 in resources. For his efforts, Marco had the library at Crosstown Arts’ Storybooth, which encourages literacy and academic success for at-risk students in the North Memphis community, named for him.
Pavé believes, "As an artist, it is important to that all artists have the resources to succeed and the professionalization that will allow them to be successful, and I believe strongly that municipal government and non-profit organizations should position themselves to help artists, given the social good of art and its economic value." For his work in this area, he was invited to give two TEDx talks: at Memphis’s inaugural TEDx event, he spoke on “Arts Entrepreneurship in Memphis: From Hobbyists to Lobbyists”; in Nashville, he advocated for the state to invest more in the arts, and in hip-hop in particular, with “Hip-Hop As High Art: Broadening the Scope of Arts in Tennessee.
