Kind Dub

FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Kind Dub brought their generous style of Hip-Hop to Hodi’s Half Note, on June 1. They were the opening act, along with: Hench, Qbala and Syntax. Psalm One was the direct support and Louis Logic was the headliner.

Cody “Mr. Kind Dub” Marsden is the disc jockey and guitarist, Cory “CO” C. and Nick “Arson” Arsenault are the emcees of Kind Dub.

Before Kind Dub began their performance, they asked the crowd to praise Qbala and Dominic Deadbeat. CO mentioned it had been their first time back at the venue since Aug. Mr. Kind Dub went onto play the track for “Freestyle CO Intro”, CO motioned for everyone to clap their hands above their heads and they quickly followed suit.

After CO generated energy and warmed up the crowd with audience participation with his opening freestyle, he mentioned Kind Dub’s lyrical content was real Hip-Hop. After he provided the first verse and chorus to “Kind Dub Krew”, Arson rapped the second verse.

CO went onto acknowledge Psalm One and Louis Logic and thanked them for making Fort Collins, Colo. a part of their tour. He went onto say this was the last show, before they embarked on their own tour and mentioned they would be leaving the following Friday. He mentioned they would have a free downloadable album via their website on June 2 and continued their recital with “Hood Life”.

Arson and CO voiced their opinions on the current state of Hip-Hop, before and after “Education”. They spoke of the difference of what an emcee and a rapper was. They mentioned rappers rapped on top of their lyrics and questioned how they could charge an audience $20 to see them. Then, they spoke on how the event was $5 and none of the acts needed the extra vocals to help guide them. They stated they needed to reeducate the fans, the crowd agreed with them and cheered.

Qbala was invited on stage, for the performance of “Get Paid”. Mr. Kind Dub walked away from behind his DJ set up, grabbed an electric guitar and stood beside the rest of Kind Dub and Qbala. They took turns providing their verses and accompanied each other with the chorus. Afterwards, “Mr. Kind Dub” continued to play the guitar and they ended their concert with “How We Do It”.

What would a week celebrating music be without us celebrating some of our favorite Colorado Musicians?! Presented by Spokesbuzz, Westword, Open Air CPR, New Belgium Brewery, Illegal Pete's and more, this showcase really feels like a home away from home while in Austin. Featuring both an indoor stage downstairs, and a rooftop stage atop the 512 Bar, folks from all across the world were able to see just how talented our local scene is. Featuring shows from CRL CRRLL, Rob Drabkin, Edison, NeW bEAt FUNd, Poor Me, Maxwell Hughes (formally of The Lumineers), Eldren, The Royal, Jilly.fm, AMZY, Wheelchair Sports Camp, Kind Dub, and our rowdiest friends, In The Whale, the Colorado Music Party did a fabulous job of showcasing the wide variety of music our beloved state has to offer. We saw a lot of familiar faces throughout the week, but it was great to see new faces in the crowds as well (including the drunk girl with an AMZY sticker on her boobs), and even a quick visit from Kevin Lyman, the founder and promoter of the Vans Warped Tour. From their humble beginnings one year ago Cory Clarke, Nick Arsenault, and Cody Marsden have come a very long way to become the successful entrepreneurs, musicians and students they are today. From their humble beginnings, Cory Clarke (CO), Nick Arsenault (Arson) and Cody Marsden (Mr. KD) have come a very long way to become the successful entrepreneurs, musicians and students they are today.

Emancipation at the age of 15 and never meeting his mother until just a couple years ago sculpted Clarke’s spirit to lead his own life, but it wasn’t always in the right direction. Through high school, he struggled to find the right paths to success and often found himself learning many lessons the hard way.

Shortly after losing his father at the age of 20, Marsden began to re-immerse himself in music, guitar and production.

A mutual friend between the two had introduced the future of Kind Dub, “CO and Mr. KD”, to one another before leaving to join the Air Force. After spending a summer vacation in Fort Collins, Marsden went back home to Atlanta to sell his car and acquire funds to move out to Colorado.

On the same day, Clarke made room in his house, quit his dead end jobs, enrolled in college and bought a keyboard to assist in production. Their friendship quickly grew and catalyzed the musical and entrepreneurial bond between Marsden and Clarke. Out of their prophetic friendship, Kind Dub was born.

Meanwhile, Arsenault was overseas serving under the stars and stripes in the Navy, and completed two tours. After serving, Arsenault moved to Fort Collins and one unexpected night after FoCoMX two years ago, the three of them crossed paths freestyling late-night at a bus stop.

Two days later, the trio wrote their first song,“Twist It,” together.

Adversity sculpted the raw determination that fuels these three young men to accomplish their dreams and has only motivated them to overcome the hurdles they set out to clear. As of today, all three men are full-time students, musicians and entrepreneurs.

With a diverse musical talent ranging from hip-hop to electronic and bluegrass, Kind Dub sports an impressive range of musical capabilities; although, not limited to a specific genre, they have been focusing their efforts on hip-hop.

On Dec. 26, 2012 the idea of Hood Life was born, as Clarke was busy pondering the next move waiting for Marsden to return from a trip to Atlanta. This idea evolved from a simple band merchandise into a branding and apparel business that is available in over 15 retailers across the Front Range and growing.

Marsden’s and Clarke’s brand, Hood Life, represents the progressive collaboration the Fort Collins and Colorado communities strive to achieve through proactive law reform, respect and love for our community and environment, which is leading the way for the rest of the country.
