By combining a few of the song titles from Something Different, the newly released LP by singer-songwriter Katie Buxton, you can really sense what she is trying to convey throughout the album.


After discovering her while spending some time in Nashville, I have been following Buxton for somewhat close to two years now. Something about her and her artistry intrigued me, and for a while I couldn’t nail on the head what it was.

Listening through her LP, I finally realized what drew me in: Honesty and simplicity. Something that a large majority of today’s artists trade for glitz, fog machines, dancers, lights and eye-catching costumes.

Buxton knows who she is as an artist, and she doesn’t plan on changing that for anyone any time soon. In Something Different, she delivers a raw, honest, and clear message that only a real musician can.

“Dying in Different Ways” – This song serves as a great opener because i think it shows Buxton’s personality; fun, witty, and aware. It starts of with a fun acoustic strum pattern, that is then joined by an upright bass line, some harmonies, and horns. It builds instrumentally from an acoustic ditty to a big band jam. What she addresses first in the song is that we’re all dying (pretty morbid), but she goes on to imply that maybe we shouldn’t take this thing called life so seriously.

I think what she is getting at, is once we realize that our time here on earth is very limited, that’s when we start living and enjoying all the ups and downs of this journey.

I used to get caught up in the little things, till’ I realized how little they really are.
“Heavenly Father” – “Heavenly Father” is the song that the world needs now. With so much hate, misunderstanding, and judgment based on religious beliefs and morals, every single person should hear this masterpiece.

It’s one of those songs that just leaves you speechless in the end.

The song is directed at those who use religion to instill fear and shame upon people. It tells the story of a curious young girl brought up under harsh and judgmental religious values, “teacher said heaven’s not for everyone, hell is for most, so keep your mouth shut or you know where you’ll be going”.

The song sounds like a disappointing reflection from childhood. Buxton sings about two vivid depictions of God, one as judgmental, and one as loving and all inclusive, “What kind of God only loves on condition? If this is the one they speak of then I don’t want to meet him. It sure as hell isn’t the God I know to be true”.

She is daring in her lyric choices, and is very clear on where she stands. Buxton also calls out the hypocritical ways of some, “Heavenly father they say love your neighbor, but don’t get to close if he loves another man”.

And father they say I’m your child, then they tell me I’m cursed if I don’t change myself for you.
“Rich” – “Rich” is the minimalist millennial’s anthem. The song talks about finding happiness within yourself, rather than finding it within things, and it says this without shaming those that do like materialistic things, and that’s what I enjoy about it the most.

From Buxton’s social media you can easily tell that she’s a happy go lucky, free spirit, so this song fits her perfectly.

Cause everybody wants fame, and a million to their name, and I feel I’ve got everything I need.
“Painted Hearts” – “Painted Hearts” starts off with a tribal chant melody, and instantly gives me American Indian vibes, “I am no one’s brother, I am no one’s father, I am the wind, the sun, the hoof beats of the buffalo”.

Throughout the song you hear the heart of someone who is loyal to the earth, and all the beauty that it yields. The song serves as an homage to mother earth and also gives a warning:

The earth is colored red now, I hear her crying out loud for the white skin that’s taken the place of painted hearts, their blades pointed at my painted heart.

“You Flew” – This song to me tells the story of unrequited love. It is skillfully written. So much pain is condensed into to three minutes. If you have ever been on the side of love where you want things to be a certain way, but you can obviously see that the other person neither shares, nor has any regards for those desires, then you will probably sob.

“I was a building, you were a bird, i was rooted, and hoped you were. I wanted steady, I wanted you, but I loved deeper than you asked me to, so you flew”.

Can I just say wow? When I had the chance chat with Buxton, I specifically asked her what pain inspired this song, because it was very evident that it was a very personal piece.

Basically it’s about learning to stop chasing people who will never be able to love you the way you love them. It has happened a couple time to me, so it’s about a few people.
While I hate to see Buxton’s heart broken, if it happens to yield glorious music such as this, then everything happens for a reason.

“What is love if you have to beg for it, nearly killed me just waiting for it, so I watched as you flew.”


“Words Are Dead” – This song is definitely the most lighthearted track. It intentionally proves the point that you can write a song about nothing, add a catchy melody, a whistle, and you have a hit. The guitar is catchy, and it’s a great riding tune.

So there’s nothing in this chorus, except empty words that don’t mean a thing, and how long will it take you noticed, or are you just happy to have something to sing.
“People Only Listen When It Looks Good” – Even thought it was very hard to, this song is undoubtedly my favorite off of the album. It addresses what I think is the most pertinent problem with this generation, we no longer appreciate the value of reality, instead we seek happiness in falsity.

We run to our virtual worlds (i.e instagram) and drool over other people’s success in efforts to escape our daily struggles, when we don’t realize that our truth and circumstances makes us who we are, and gives us true identity.

I think the main message Buxton tries to convey in this song is that we shouldn’t have to look good to be heard, and we shouldn’t be so quick to keep up with the Jones’s.

“Forget your truth, forget your charities, were busy worshiping celebrities, and spending all our time and cash trying to keep up with Kardashians, and listening to music about girls and getting wasted”. The song is accompanied by a beautiful string section.


Why are the people being heard always the people, with the emptiest words, and nothing to say – cause people only listen when it looks good.
“Revolution” – “Revolution” to me seems like a sequel to track number four, “Painted Hearts”. Buxton sings about how it is never to early to start changing the way we go about life. In hopes to have a better tomorrow, we have to inflict change now, and make a difference! This song is the perfect culmination of this beautiful collection of inspirational and thought-provoking songs.

This is actually the best whole project that I have heard in a while from an independent artist.

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but I have a “wish list” on the notes in my phone which consists of artists that I want to feature on Straight Outta Nashville. Last month, I found myself at the ASCAP Writer’s Night at school and Katie Buxton played her song “Painted Hearts.” Not even halfway through the song, Katie was on the wish list.

Katie Buxton writes the kind of songs that you’ll carry with you for a while. She captures the uniqueness of the images that she’s hoping to portray through the complexity of words and coated in beautiful melodies. And she makes it all seem so effortless. Katie is definitely an artist worth getting to know and I hope that you’ll take that chance on her. She is so deserving of it.

MusicDash: What originally drew you to Nashville?

Katie Buxton: When I was fourteen I knew that Nashville was just a place that I really wanted to see, so my mom took me over my spring break. While I was here for the first time I visited Belmont and happened to make some connections with people in the industry, so it gave me a reason to come back. I visited Belmont about two more times before I decided to apply and I knew it was my first choice, so when I got accepted I immediately knew where I was going to end up. Those first few trips I took down to Nashville before I made the move really validated that it was the right place to be for what I wanted to do, just through the people I met and everything I could see that was going on in this town.

MusicDash: Tell us a little bit about you session with Amplify Entertainment!

Katie Buxton: Amplify is honestly such a special company and they’re doing seriously awesome things. I found out about them several months ago when they first started filming their Single Sessions and I thought they were awesome. I loved how professional the videos looked and how every video captured the vibe of the artists so well, from the location to the angles and the lighting. I finally signed up to do one a couple months ago and ended up filming at Hound Dog Commons in East Nashville and played my song “Painted Hearts.” I was so impressed with how comfortable they made me feel and just how genuine every single person is that works for them.

MusicDash: Where did you get the inspiration from for “Painted Hearts?” It’s such a beautiful and captivating song!

Katie Buxton: Thank you so much! “Painted Hearts” is definitely a very special song to me. Ever since I can remember I’ve had a really intense and deep connection to the Native American culture that I can’t really describe in words. About two and a half years ago I was attending a summer program at Berklee College of Music in Boston and at the orientation, a faculty member performed a Native American chant with a frame drum. It immediately hit me and that chant just stuck with me. Around a year and a half later, I was sitting in my room with that chant playing in my head again and I had the thought of writing a song and story around it The words seemed to pour out of me without any effort and I think it was finished within about ten or fifteen minutes. It came from a very deep place inside me and it’s still one of the only songs of my own that makes me get emotional almost every time I play it.

MusicDash: You have some really exciting things going on this year so far! You’ve been accepted into Belmont’s Bear House Writer Management. What kind of opportunities will this partnership allow you?

Katie Buxton: Bear House has been really great for meeting other Belmont writers and getting more opportunities to play out. It’s also a really cool way to meet industry professionals because they come in to give seminars and talks fairly often, so it’s easier to get connected since it’s such an intimate setting. It’s been a good way to become familiar with the relationship of writer and manager, because that’s something I hadn’t experienced before. I’m hoping to play more writers rounds, find more cowriting partners and just make more connections in general.

MusicDash: I hear that you have a new EP coming out soon! What can you tell us about it? What can we expect?

Katie Buxton: I do! The EP will be released sometime between now and the end of December. It’s four songs with what I think is a cool variety of styles and a good representation of what I do. I’ve found that it’s almost impossible for me to stay in one genre and I think you’ll probably hear that in this EP. One thing the songs do have in common is that they are meaningful in some way and each has a message of its own. Once it’s released you’ll be able to find it on iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud, Noisetrade, and basically any service you use to hear music. I want to use this EP to get my name out, as well as just share my own truth and what I’m about as a person and an artist.

MusicDash: What’s some of the best advice you’ve received from somebody in the industry?

Katie Buxton: Recently I was talking to my songwriting professor Jodi Marr about my goals and how I feel like I’m still trying to hone in on my sound. She told me, “Be Katie Buxton but thirty feet tall.” I really love that because it’s so easy to look at other artists who have been successful or that you just like and try to imitate their style in some way, but the artists who stand out are the ones that aren’t like anyone else. It’s a nice reminder that when you’re centered in your own authenticity, you’re magnetic and everything falls into place the way it’s supposed to.

MusicDash: I was looking over your website and I loved what you said in the “my purpose” section. Can you sum that up for our readers?

Katie Buxton: Basically, I want my music to touch people on a deeper level. I want every one of my songs to have weight, to be meaningful, and to hold some kind of intention. With my lyrics especially I really strive to help people awaken to their own light. That’s really my purpose – to spread light. I know that that’s what I’m here to do, and I just want so badly to help people along on their own journeys.

MusicDash: What’s coming up next for you?

Katie Buxton: Hopefully a whole lot! Right now I’m really focused on getting my EP finished and then into the hands of as many people as possible, but I’m already starting to think about what I want to release afterwards. I’d love to do more acoustic sessions as well just because they’re a lot of fun. I’m also in the process of planning shows for the near future. But other than that, I can’t give a clear answer yet – I have a lot of things currently in the works that will manifest in time, so it’s a matter of waiting to see how everything comes together and takes shape.

It’s freezing. Our feet are totally numb, and our socks are soaked. The batteries in our cameras and laptops are about dead, and as the snow and ice begins to melt we’re worried that we’ll ruin our equipment. We’ve been outside all day in this blizzard and now we’re about to film our last Single Session of the day with our friend Katie Buxton.

Katie seems impervious to the cold despite the fog coming from her mouth when she begins to sing. She’s bundled up just like we are but her fingers have to be freezing. Mine would be. And yet her performance is practically perfect–she nails it on one of the first takes. Later when we were reviewing audio and footage, our jaws dropped.

That was the first time I heard Katie Buxton’s newest single, “You Flew,” and while it’s tough for any listening experience to top the first time I heard her perform it on that snowy day at Belmont University in Nashville, TN, the studio version of “You Flew” blew me away. Huge electric guitar swells paired with Katie’s gentle voice and acoustic guitar strums in addition to minimal piano and vocal harmonies add so much to this song without overwhelming the listener. The story and feeling of this song rings clear throughout, and, as usual, Katie’s lyrics are beautiful and thoughtfully crafted.

"You Flew" was written on that snowy January day in Nashville and was recorded and mixed earlier this year by Sal Oliveri. The track was mastered by Luke Gilfeather. Katie Buxton knew for sure at the age of 12 that all she wanted to do in life was music. It was at this tender age that the Philadelphia native composed her first song on the guitar. Having discovered her calling, all that was left was to refine her gift and share it with the world when the time was right. Moving to the singer-songwriter capital of the States, Nashville, therefore only made sense. But even before she switched states Katie had gained valuable experience as a part of a number of different bands playing across genres. Her prowess as an artist were recognized by her peers when she was chosen as one of the finalists in the Sing for the Trees songwriting competition in 2012. A year later she repeated the trick, earning a mentorship stint with Melissa Ferrick and Sally Taylor, daughter of Rock and Roll Hall of Famer James Taylor.

Katie’s move to Nashville was to further her songwriting knowledge at the Belmont University. In the process she was invited into the Bear House Writers Management, becoming one of eight to play in the ASCAP Writers Showcase in the fall of 2015. To date she performs regularly at various venues around Nashville. Her collection of songwriting accolades aside, Katie’s crowning glory so far is her first ever EP, ‘From Songbirds’, released March 2016. Her creative juices continued flowing thereafter, leading her to pen and record her deeply touching new single ‘You Flew’.

In the summer of 2013, Katie attended the Berklee Five Week Performance Program where she was a finalist in the Songwriting Showcase and received mentorship from Melissa Ferrick and Sally Taylor, daughter of James Taylor.

After moving to Nashville to attend Belmont University as a songwriting major, Katie was invited to join Bear House Writers Management and was one of eight to play in the ASCAP Writers Showcase in the fall of 2015. Adding to her songwriting accomplishments, she was later chosen as a finalist in the 2016 American Songwriting Awards with her song “Painted Hearts”.

Katie’s debut EP “From Songbirds” was released in March of 2016. Her new single “You Flew” was recorded and mixed by Sal Oliveri and mastered by Luke Gilfeather. As for the meaning of the song, Katie explains “The song is about caring deeply for someone who is not ready to love or be loved and runs out of fear, and focuses especially on the process of learning to let go”. “You Flew” is now available on Soundcloud, Itunes and all streaming services. - Jammerzine

Katie Buxton es una cantante y compositora americana. Originaria de Filadelfia pero establecida en Nashville.

Comenzó a componer a los 12 años, y desde ese momento la música se convirtió no sólo en su pasión, pero también en su carrera.

En 2012 fue finalista del concurso Sing for the Trees Songwriting Contest. Al año siguiente acudió a un programa de cinco semanas con compositores de nivel como Melissa Ferrick y Sally Taylor.

En 2015 su carrera continuó creciendo y se fue afianzando más y más como compositora, al mismo tiempo que seguía formándose en la música atentiendo también a la universidad.

En 2016 tras años de duro trabajo su recompensa llegó.

En marzo publicaba su EP debut "From Songbirds". El EP incluye su single "You Flew" una maravillosa canción con un profundo significado. Cuando amas a alguien que no está preparado para amar o ser amado y escapa.
