"Bele Chere festival preview"

It’s safe to say that to hear Jr. James & The Late Guitar is to hear Asheville at its finest. - Mountain Xpress

"Record review"

A winning effort by Asheville, NC's Jr. James, who makes his simple, guitar-based songs stand out with numerous clever touches--both lyrical and musical.
--Dan LeRoy - Graffiti

"Show review"

But the biggest surprise of the night was an incredibly high-energy set of Afro-Latin-tinged pop songs from Jr. James & The Late Guitar. Their line-up now stretched to include eight musicians (including a guest percussionist from Mandorico), the octet rocked the house--and most of the block.
--Steve Shanafelt - Mountain Xpress

"Record review"

Jr. James & The Late Guitar’s Hymns to Her is an impossible to categorize, unashamedly overreaching shaggy dog of an album, and for that I love it to pieces. It offers the soul-exploring intimacy of the blues and the do-it-your-own-way spirit of everyone from Chuck Berry to the Clash . . . James’ versatile guitar playing is obviously in the driver’s seat throughout, but producer Nancy Alenier’s keyboards show up in all the right places and do all the right things, like an accomplished character actor. This intriguing album has me ready to travel to Asheville, NC, to try to corner Mr. James and this late guitar of his.
--Rick Cornell - Music Monitor

"Calendar listing"

Jr. James & The Late Guitar play funkified rock that ranges in style from the sounds of Chuck Berry to third world percussion to Herman’s Hermits. It’s a wild mix of old and new with an eclectic set of originals that include reggae, jazz, funk and just plain retro fun. - Mountain Xpress

"Record review"

One of the most revelatory discs to have recently crossed my path . . . Its songs range from discordant reflections of love gone awry to quiet observations of the intricacies of human interaction.
--James Cassara - Rapid River
