A Conversation with Lynn Anderson
I think Betty’s music takes us back to an easier time – kind of a time of Patsy Cline and that basic country music. So I think it’s amazing. I think it’s incredible to be a part of the project. I think that occasionally if you get a chance it’s kind of a wake-up call that reminds you that people have been writing this music for a long time, and though this lady didn’t get recognized in her prime, it’s a wonderful thing that she was able to hear her music played and know that it would be recorded before she passed away.

Betty Swain was a dedicated weekend singer/performer in her earlier years opening for various artists. Throughout her part-time career, she always wanted but never got the opportunity to perform her own music. In 2010, when Betty was 85 years young, she discovered hidden deep in a cedar chest, 10 song lyrics she had written nearly a half a century before. Betty sent her lyrics to her niece Diane, a music attorney in New York and from there, Diane sent them to a guitarist she knew in Raleigh, North Carolina. From there they made their way to Jim Paul, a cowboy singer and songwriter. Jim pulled the Betty Swain Project together and did a low budget demo CD for Betty and presented the project to her in front of her family and friends. She died just a few weeks later, with the last dream of her lifetime finally fulfilled.

Nashville's Music Row Unites for The Betty Swain Project
NASHVILLE, Tennessee (PRWEB) April 03, 2013. In 2011, a simple 85 year-old widow, Betty Swain, rummaged through her cedar chest and found a folder of lyrics she had written more than five decades before. Throughout her life, she performed cover songs for fun whenever the opportunity would arise, but she had always wanted to find someone to write the music to her own lyrics. In 2011, shortly before she passed away, her dream came true. And in 2013, the rest of the world will finally have the chance to hear Betty’s songs.
After discovering the lyrics, Betty sent the folder to her niece, and it eventually found its way to singer-songwriter Jim Paul in Raleigh, North Carolina. He wrote the music to the lost lyrics and formed a band called The Betty Swain Project. They recorded demos for Betty and performed a small concert for her with family and friends in attendance. After a lifetime of yearning, Betty sat in awe, elated by the opportunity to finally hear her songs performed. Just a few weeks later, Betty Swain passed away.
Inspired by the lyrics and the remarkable woman who penned them, The Betty Swain Project teamed up with Raleigh-based music company Center Sound Records. With band member and producer Timothy Daher, Emmy®-nominated producer Craig Brandwynne and GRAMMY®-winning musician and producer Robin Ruddy at the helm, the team has brought together a diverse list of vocalists to record the album at Parlor Studios on Nashville’s Music Row. Vocalists scheduled to appear on the project include chart-topping GRAMMY® Award winner Lynn Anderson, Highway 101’s Nikki Nelson, “American Idol” finalist Siobhan Magnus, Kim Parent, Loni Rose, Marissa Begin, Taylor Watson, Brittini Black and Devin Belle.
“The level of talent that has come together is pretty inspiring,” says Craig Brandwynne, the album’s co-producer and Vice President of Center Sound Records. “I’m glad that Betty had the chance to hear these songs, which was her lifelong dream. But she would never have believed that all of these people would come together now to give her songs life.”
The producers have assembled a who’s who list of Nashville session players for the project, including Jimmy Nichols (Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill) on keys, Dave Pomeroy (Trisha Yearwood, Emmylou Harris) on bass, drummer Rick Lonow (Loretta Lynn, Larry Gatlin), Daniel Parks (Blake Shelton, Jason Crabb) on guitar and Robin Ruddy (Rod Stewart, Ray Stevens, Shania Twain) on banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar, pedal steel and dobro.
With the upcoming release of The Betty Swain Project, Betty’s dream will finally come true in a much grander way than she could have imagined during her lifetime. “You kids have given me something you will never understand and I will never be able to put into words,” she said after hearing the songs for the first time. “Thank you so much. You have put the period at the end of my life.”
The album is currently being recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. Center Sound Records plans to release the album later this year.

NEW Release, "THE BETTY SWAIN PROJECT" 12 songs written by me and produced through Center Sound Records, Wake Forest, NC, Double Star Music LLC, and the Parlor Studio on Music Row, Nashville, Tn.
I am in awe and beside myself with emotion. The CD Betty Swain Project is out. Lynn Anderson, hosting 650am SWM radio from Nashville played her single from the CD on Air, yesterday, mentioning the Betty Swain Project team. After a station-break she came back and expounded on the project and the people involved mentioning, Robin Ruddy, performer and producer, and Kim Parent, A great voice on the CD. You can hear this broadcast at wsmonline.com (archives) it was the Thursday Special Host show July 17th. And the announcement was about 30 minutes into the show so you can fast forward right to it.
I am overwhelmed, and ecstatic. The CD is NOW available on ITUNES and AMAZON.COM or at the Betty Swain facebook page, it will soon be loaded to websites for each of the 9 female voices of Betty.
I was the most fortunate person for Betty's Lyrics to find. How great it was as I remember meeting with Niles Mills for the first time. Niles said I was the only cowboy he knew and hoped I'd write the music for Betty's words. I open a 14" by 8 1/2" envelope and out fell newspaper clippings, photos, and a few play bills from Betty's performance years of the late 50's, 60's, 70's,. The photos were great and most can be seen at Betty Swain Project on facebook. She was a doll dressed in handmade cowgirl outfits with hat and boots. She was a dynamite package I could tell. I browsed the news clipping and leafed through the playbills for Dance halls, Fairs, and her shows. Her band was made up of friends and eventually a husband. I could tell she wanted to let her voice out. And here were Betty's lyrics found 50 years after she wrote them.
I barely glanced at the lyric sheets that day, but I know I wanted to accept this responsibility. That evening around 5pm I was riding down the road when a call came from an unknown number. "hello", I said. "hello. Is this Jim Paul?" her voice steady and soft. "yes it is". I replied. "This is Betty Swain and I understand you have my lyrics". "yes", I replied. She started "I just want you to know that...I lost my husband 3 years ago, and all I want to do is hear my music before I am with him. And I don't want to wait that long". I chuckled a little but knew she was serious, All she wanted was someone to write the music and record a cassette tape for her to hear. I laughed again and let her know CDs were the popular medium these days. She said she didn't have a CD player and I assured her that I would make certain she did. I asked for about a months time and I would get back to her... The rest of this story is unbelievable and I am hoping to write it all down from my perspective, But for today.
The BETTY SWAIN PROJECT CD IS AVAILABLE through ITUNES and Through Amazon.com I encourage you to purchase the CD rather than individual releases as you will miss all the different voices used to bring Betty's Words to life through music. These are classic songs showing the struggles and triumphs in one woman's life. Let her words guide you through these times.

Bio
Born in Upstate New York and raise through New England prep schools - I left the east in 1975 heading for Boulder Co, where I spent the next 20 years. Boulder is where I grew and learned my particular method of playing. I was involved in several bands and settled on a duet formate for quite some time. My stylings come from a history of players from John Prine to Willey Nelson to Doc Watson, I am also a song writer and producer and love to perform my own music.
Leaving Boulder, Co, in 1992 I moved to Raleigh NC, where I finished my 30 year career with a large corporation, and began to pursue my musical career.
