"Triad Arts Weekend"

Guitarist and singer/songwriter Johnathan Loos has a new album out. Storm of Peace features infectious melodies, standout vocals, harmonies, and instrumental work, but these songs also showcase Johnathan’s wonderful use of language as he gets at young love, and loss, and navigating our way through life. Johnathan is a keen observer, a devoted journal writer, and he just seems to consistently find ways to encapsulate feelings, periods of time, and experiences, in a straight forward language and yet artistic form of expression that I think most of us can relate to. They’re often personal stories of discovery, but don’t expect this songwriter to pretend like he’s got the answers for you. For Johnathan Loos the journey continues. His new CD Storm of Peace is a nice place to sort of stop and sort of take stock. Jonathan spoke with me by phone from New York. - 88.5 WFDD

Bio

Johnathan Loos was born in a magical palace somewhere in Deleware. Around age 7, at the behest of his father who wanted to instill in him the values of moving out of job necessity, he hitchhiked south in a typical early 90s middle-class mini-van, accompanied by the rest of his family and carrying nothing but all of their belongings. Long story short: He grew up in Advance, NC. He went to college at UNC. He’s been playing music throughout the majority of his life, as the case tends to be, and has helped contribute in many ways to the local music scene - from his work with good friend and musician Tyler Nail on various projects, to operating a home studio, recording and producing albums for other local artists. He’s most recently released what he considers his first solo cd, Storm Of Peace.

Now, in the first person:

Storm Of Peace is a selection of songs I compiled mostly between 2011 and 2014. Its crux, or at least aspiration, is its lyricism. The album's also been characterized by the vocal performance/arrangement, melodies, acoustic instrumentation, and composition. Other familiar descriptors: relaxing, soothing, sick groove, not bad, pretty good, anecdotally left in cd players for personally impactful bouts of time, spotify cash cow, etc. It has a folk/americana sound with a hint of a somewhat more modern - one could say, “pop” -sensibility. As it is delicate, self-aware, and pining, it is rhythmic, driving, and nonchalant. Back to the lyricism specifically, I’d say I was writing this with some type of eye on the subtleties of love, loss, and identity. Like art.

The album was recorded, produced, and mixed by myself and Tyler Nail in our home studio in the foothills of North Carolina, with added instrumentation from talented local artists and friends throughout the NC piedmont-triad area.
