Last Month, URB.com hosted it’s official Next 100 Showcase down in Austin, Texas where we debuted a number of DOPE new artists.
Among them, was a fresh, young, charismatic rapper known as JINX, reppin’ Seattle by way of Boston. It was his standout rooftop performance that afternoon in Austin that landed him here, in the prestigious URB Blog, and as always you heard it here first.
So, I’ll save the thousand words for something more in depth down the road, but in the meantime if you want to hear some fresh spits, hit the jump for the download. - Urb.com
After reading the title of Massachusetts-bred Booth newcomer Jinx‘s new single, you might be expecting an ode to the popular sportswear company, or perhaps a track centered around a (probably F-bomb-containing) acronym. The truth, however, is considerably weirder than either of those options: F.I.L.A. is the name of a “futuristic love angel” from the past (yeah, I’m not sure how that works either), who sparks up a romance with the rapper, a spacefaring adventurer who refers to himself as “the black Buzz Lightyear.” The time travelers’ romance is passionate, but short-lived; ultimately, their feelings for one another aren’t enough to bridge the temporal gap, and their love meets a bittersweet end. So yeah, it’s a little out there – whether or not you can wrap your heard around the spaced-out premise, though, the combo of Jinx’s witty rhyme style and producer Adrian McKennon‘s dreamy boardwork makes for an appealingly strange experience. Like what you’re hearing? More fantastic journeys await on the artist’s Furutama LP, released in April and out now online.

Jinx (a local rapper we profiled earlier this year) has had a lot on his plate lately. The fresh-faced, foul-mouthed kid will take the stage beside chart-topping rapper Wiz Khalifa at sold-out shows in Seattle (Oct. 15 at Showbox SODO) and the next day at WOW Hall in Eugene, Ore. He's set to be the MySpace featured artist next week, plans to release a new album this winter and might be working with a Grammy-winning producer on a couple of tracks.
And though we're a little pissed at him for not scheduling any local dates, Jinx will be offering a FREE mixtape of some of his latest work for our earbuds to gobble up, called JFK. It's available for download next Monday (Oct. 11) at jinxuniverse.bandcamp.com. - Spokane Inlander
Until now, I hadn’t heard of him — and if you haven’t either, I strongly suggest you check him out.
The Massachusetts transplant comes out of the gates swinging on his new record, Futurama, a fast and furious smattering of tongue-twisting declarations, R&B slow-downs and Timberlake-esque falsetto-centered dance tracks. Jinx is a smart ass, a lover, a fighter, a class clown and a moralist, preaching and playing through 13 delicious tracks. On “3089” he’s clear-cut, bold and brazen — it’s a public declaration of who he is and how rad he is. (He literally says, “My name is Jinx and I am better than you. I’m way sexier and more clever too.”) He slows things down around a breathy chorus on “Get Away” before ramping things up again on the dance floor-ready “Panic at the Disco.” Jinx is all over the place — but that’s a good thing. He’s just showing he can bring it. - The Pacific Northwest Inlander
