"Annual Earth Day Concert with BLEACHERS and Jetty"

This past Tuesday, Bleachers rocked The Met at WBRU’s Annual Earth Day concert. The night kicked off with a meet and greet with Jack Antonoff, where fans including yours truly got to meet and take fun photos with the band’s lead singer! 2014 WBRU Rock Hunt finalists, Jetty, opened for Bleachers with a performance that reminded us why we loved them in the first place.
“It was like they were here for us,” said Jetty lead singer, Yeugene Barokha, following the band’s performance. Jetty was honored to be able to open for Bleachers and was even a little star struck to meet the former Steel Train lead singer, Jack. Most of the audience may have come because of Bleachers, but Jetty captured their attention. Even though we’ve seen and heard them before, they bring something new to each of their performances, constantly keeping us entertained. - WBRU.com

"Joywave and Jetty at the Met"

Wednesday night Joywave and Jetty took the stage at The Met. Before the concert, three members of Jetty, filled with excitement and nervous energy, stood in a circle by the entrance and began to sing. It was entertaining for the few of us in the room at the time and got us all pumped for the opening. An hour or so before the show started, I talked to band members Mike Spillane and Dave Davignon. After a couple minutes discussing their “winter-fall fashion” of the night—Spillane sporting a button down with a brightly colored “hot pocket” and an infinity scarf his mother had knitted him and Davignon dressed in a number inspired by Tommy Hilfiger—they filled me in on what the band had been up to recently: working on an album. Currently, four out of the nineteen song ideas they’ve had so far have made the cut. They’re hoping for 11 songs on the new album. Mike explained that since the members of the band live far away from each other they write and compose through email, sending pieces of the song to each member who then adds to it until a song is born. When they can, Jetty journeys to The Lumberyard, the barn that band member Mike Conway converted to a recording studio. Spillane also gave me a heads up that they were going to play a new song and that I should look out for a tambourine. With that, the BRU Crew took its places and waited for the concert to begin.

When Jetty took the stage members of the band and the audience uttered sporadic shushes and giggles. Then, when it was quiet, someone whistled the mockingjay tune from the Hunger Games which garnered laughter from everyone in the room. Then, the band unleashed their talent. Listening to Jetty is always a pleasant surprise. Each time, you are reminded of why you fell in love with the band in the first place, and it is always a treat to see the reactions in the crowd while they convert the non-believers. “It’s Wednesday night. Let’s dance!” Conway told the audience. I eagerly awaited the tambourine and was not disappointed. It appeared that the band was just as excited to hear the song as I was to hear it. The band, who, in the past, has benefitted from audience involvement, suffered a slight setback from the small Wednesday crowd, but still gave it their all and played a great set.

"Rock Hunt Semifinals: Night Three"

Jetty took the stage next. Lead singer Yeugene Barokha has a sweet falsetto not unlike Adam Levine of Maroon 5. The music Jetty played had a smooth, jazzy feel, personifying some of the best attributes of Pop Rock. The band members get into it. Jetty is one of those bands whose music is best heard live, for it benefits from the presence of an audience. The band members draw their energy from the crowd. They crafted the entire the performance to fit the audience, moving just the right amounts and manipulating their volume in order to provoke the audience’s response. The Fatt Squirrel seemed to be flooded with Jetty fans. During their performance, girls screamed, and audience members proclaimed the lyrics back to the band. Their music came to life in the room, capturing the attention of their fans. After Jetty’s set, Barokha explained, “I couldn’t believe the crowd response. We’re all really good friends. We play what we love.”

Ultimately, it was Jetty that was crowned winner of the night.“We’re just friends who play music … we love. We compromise but not a lot,” the band member said after the announcement. The band is excited to move to the next stage of the competition. Until then, the Providence and Massachusetts boys will be “hanging out in a barn,” arguing and working on their next album. - WBRU.com

"Rock Hunt Finals!"

Jetty started off their set with a slow beat as if to ease the audience into their performance. As always during Jetty performances, the room was packed with their fans. Their time in the barn must have done them some good because the band returned with double the energy and passion. The drummer’s dreads danced as he pounded his heart out. “This next one’s got some stank,” Yeugene Barokha told the audience before one of their songs, and that song truly did have some stank. Everyone in the room—even their competitors—was engrossed in Jetty’s performance. - WBRU.com

"Last Band Standing"

Local five-piece Jetty (jettyjams.com) came out swinging and put up a good fight behind a room full of screaming female fans as the band announced, “We got some stank, so don’t be afraid to get sweaty!” Vocalist Yeugene Barokha was the talk of the evening, crooning away over the breezy pop jams. Jetty surely won over some new fans, as they did during their underdog semifinal win at Fatt Squirrel.

"Jetty at Church 7/13/13"

If you haven’t heard Jetty yet we feel for you. Only for a second though, cause you will, it’s gonna to find you. The scariest part about Jetty is that there doesn’t seem to be an end of quality material in sight. These guys LIVE in and operate 3 home studios which, is absolutely frightening and amazing all at the same time.

Can you imagine the possibilities? Most of the time you get musicians who know nothing of recording or who are so slow at whipping out new music babies that they pretty much breed their own destruction. With Jetty this is certainly not the case.

Jetty consists of 5 longtime friends whose sole purpose in life it seems is to weave their everyday lives and experiences into amazing fucking music.

Jetty’s sound is organic, not a single beat feels forced. There’s nothing worse than a band that is faking it. You can’t fool the listener. We know the good stuff.

This is the good stuff.

Jetty’s self-titled debut EP brings the funk, the jazz, the sexy, and most importantly the whiskey. Come out to Church of Boston, on Saturday July 13, 2013 and be a part of their live video/show recording.

We were fortunate enough to catch up with the guys and get some of our burning questions answered.

Maimed & Tamed: Who’s in Jetty and what does everybody play?

Jetty: Jetty is comprised of three multi-instrumentalists (Yeugene Barokha, Mike Spillane & Mike Conway), and a bass & percussion/rhythm section (Devin Fernberg & Dave Davignon).

M&T: What were the different bands you’ve all been in together previously and how’d Jetty form?

Jetty: Jetty formed late last summer as Spillane & Conway (consistent collaborators and roommates at the time) were working on an all-collaborative album called The Drift Tape. As that was wrapping up, there was one last, incomplete instrumental that need a good match for a vocalist. Eventually a friend referred Yeugene. Sparks flew, and Jetty was born soon thereafter.

Different permutations of the Spillane, Dave and Devin line-up have been featured in Speed the Harvest, Kid and the Wolf and Ashley Root and the Tubers. Conway was involved in recording and mixing albums for Speed the Harvest and Kid and the Wolf.

M&T: Where did the name Jetty come from?

Jetty: The bottom of a bottle of Old Crow whiskey on a breezy summer night down on Squaw Island.

M&T: Although Jetty is fairly new you’ve managed to string a good amount of shows together, is there a favorite memory from one these shows that sticks out?

Jetty: We played a benefit show promoting our friend’s cross-country bike ride for Cancer and Crohn’s research. Aside from helping out the fundraising effort, the show was phenomenal. It was 100+ degrees inside the venue with no windows or air conditioning and a room full of our friends. They stuck it out, danced their asses off, and absolutely brought the ruckus. Everyone left drenched in sweat and smiling ear to ear.

M&T: Some say that this music really capture the essence and soul of summer, does that put any pressure on the represent and how do you feel about that that description of Jetty’s tunes?

Jetty: We think thats a great analogy. I would love for people to crank Jetty on the beach, on the boat or out at the clubs at night. I think our music has a place in all of those scenarios. Our intention is to usually make music that will spark up that care-free, windows down, let’s party kind of a vibe. The mentality to spend our time having a great time; no matter what it is we do is really the only thing for us in New England that isn’t seasonal.

M&T: The great thing about a Jetty show is that there is a built-in audience of die hard music and party lovers from the band’s previous incarnations that follows the band around almost religiously. How does it feel after years of playing in different projects to get this sort of immediate love and support with a new project and does that in turn motivate you to give even more back to the fans and keeping pushing out better and greater amounts of work?

Jetty: For the most part it feels like friends and family, because that’s what it is. We feel very fortunate to have a strong support structure around us that is built by people who are excited to come out, party, dance, and share the music with us. Beyond that, we invite any and all to come join that family. Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses!

M&T: July 13 presents an incredibly cool and unique opportunity in which Jetty, in cahoots with StellarFX Boston, will be recording a live music video during the show at Church of Boston. Can you reveal what sort of cool tricks Jetty and StellarFX have planned for the concertgoer that night?

Jetty: Yes! We are recording some live video at the July 13 show, with the help of a few very talented friends in the world of production. We’ll be mixing stereo field recordings and the sound board audio. Nothing groundbreaking really, - MaimedandTaimed.com
