James Grebb has been publishing tracks since 2017. Before that, he had been doing live mixes in the electro and bass house genres for 7 years. Since last year, his singles have regularly achieved quite good views. The special thing about it: Only one of his top releases was released on a label. Nevertheless, Grebb receives support from Pasquale Rotella, who is part of the “EDC” team and is employed by “Insomniac”. 1. Tell us about the first track that put you on the map in the electronic scene and the journey since. How did you get started?

My song “Contrast” was the first time I feel like I really defined my sound and exemplified the direction I wanted to take my records in. I received so many messages asking me to continue that style, blending in a strong vocal lead with a modern Electro House drop. It’s still one of my favorites tracks I’ve written.

2. Tell us about your latest project

“Static Memory” was one of many songs, created by just experimenting in my studio. I always love to bend the rules and use plugins in ways they weren’t intended or automating sounds in a unique way. The main bassline is the result of doing just that. Paired with the glitchy vocals in the break, I knew it was ready.

3. Tell us something we wouldn’t normally find out about you?

I love Jazz music! It’s usually what I’m listening to whenever I’m relaxing or looking to reference outside of the electronic scene.

4. What single night out has been most memorable for you as a dj and producer?

Seeing Habstrakt at Temple Nightclub in Denver. I’ve always looked up to him as a producer and artist. Watching him play a packed nightclub with original, genre bending music made me set a goal for myself to follow the same path.

5. Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?

“I Remember” by Deadmau5 and Kaskade. I’ve probably listened to it 1,000 times at this point, but the chord progression and melody still feel as innovative and new as when I first listened to it.

6. Dream collaboration and why?

Definitely Martin Garrix. His work has been a huge inspiration to my own productions. His ability to make hit dance pop records alongside darker club records is legendary.

7. If you could play any festival, which would it be?

Ultra Music Festival in Miami. When I first got into electronic music, I would watch the livestream every year like clockwork. It always seemed like the most incredible crowd and atmosphere.

8. How do you get a track started? tell us about your production process

I typically start with the drop and focus heavily on designing my own basslines and top leads. After I have the idea down I continue to tweak smaller details and move onto writing chords/melodies for the breaks.

9. Latest project? What are you currently working on?

Naturally, spending so much time at home this year, I’ve got a lot of new tracks lined up for 2021 and 2022. I’m excited to see what people think!

10. The relationship between a dj and the audience is crucial, and yet is seems to be a fragile one – how do you see the balance between giving the crowd what they want and treating them to something new?

That always depends on the show. I think it’s important to mix in what’s familiar with records that are lesser known to surprise the crowd. One of the greatest feelings as a DJ is playing a track no one in the club has heard before. - UFO Network

James Grebb is actually already an old hand in the EDM scene: Before he devoted himself to his first music productions, he had been a DJ for seven years. In the background, spherical and bass-heavy surfaces are interwoven with distinctive synths. The drop follows after a short time, which with its monotonous club sounds represents the counterweight and seduces the dance floor with its fat bassline. In the second round, the arrangement in the chorus and the drop varies, which demonstrates the producer's love of detail.
