"Reviewing a Prophet"

Sliding in the compact disc, pressing play and waiting to hear what this new age dread locked hazel eyed Haitian artist is going to spill out on the first track, "Yo Fè'w Mal Afrika".

When the first 15 seconds of the track plays you are wowed into believing that maybe Bob Marley had a hand in making this CD a reality, then Jahnesta's voice comes into play and you realize that this is an awesome change to the typical compas music we are used in our community. Refreshing sounds of reggae resonating from the speakers as "Se Pa Pou Nou" transforms me into a beach side café with the cool breeze hitting my face with a citronade in my hand realizing that his words "Ki sa yap di? Ki pa manti, Ki sa wap fè? Ki pa pote doulè" can be targeted to this day in age against not only the government in Washington, Haiti, Iraq, everywhere and yet can also be compared to your friends. Powerful words from a man whose simplistic lifestyle brings pride to our midst.

As the album plays and I hear
"Chasse A L' Enfant ", I once again get that "The Wailers' feel as this cool vibe of peace and harmony enthrall my emotions. Singing in French on some tracks its exciting to see that as haitians we can make any type of music for the masses and be able to touch others with words, sounds and beats. As a "Prophet" as one person called him, Jahnesta makes you comfortable, it takes you back to your youth when everything was much more simple, more tranquil, more familiar, and happier.

One of my personal favorites,"Vini Avè'm" is sensual,, romantic and soothing."Ta vle trete'w yon lot jan,Ba'w plis pase mwen pran, Ta renmen kote'w lontan, Pa vle pedi'w ou twop impotan, Vini Avè'm mwen vle renmen'w, Vini Avè'm ou deja genyen'm", how many times have those words wandering around your mind as something you'd love to have told you? He shows a side of himself that is whimsical and at the same time loving. I can listen to that track all day.

As the album plays you start getting used to his different voice, it is incoparable. Many will try saying that this "sound" is a Bob Marley replica but if you truly listen to his words and his sound, Jahnesta is his own artist, with his own, unique feel. Singing in his native tongue, creole, he sets himself apart from all other artists and focuses more on a message. As a Rastafarian he personifies the quality of peace, brotherhood and solidarity they emphasize. Love-"One Love", is what you take home when you listen to Solda Jah, that is the primary message.

"Kè Kal Manman" is another track where he asks the question, "Can you love your son less because he's a Rasta?" Knowing that as a Rasta you might not always be accepted, Jahnesta takes it to the corps and asks the direct question, and personally, I accept him!

On a more political note, the titletrack, "Solda Jah" has become somewhat of an anthem for the inustice happening in our country to date and through the protests nad the opposition, this song has touched the people in Haiti. Written more than two years earlier, this song talks about war.' Denye batay la koumanse, yon ban'n yap rele, pou yo chwazi unn pe & ou frè'm nann ki kan wap ye?" The ultimate fight pronounces the words on this track. When it all boils down to it where will you be? On wars side or on peace side? It's an intriguing view of what traditionally happens in the world. Between opposing parties, wars, disagreements the bottom line becomes Peace! Are we all reday to fight for that? Not fight with our fists, with guns and with armory but with our minds and our souls.

Jahnesta has gotten me thinking. This CD is like coffee in the morning, waking up your consciousness as a people and opening your eyes to knowing that at the end of the day only unity and love for one another is the answer to our problems and foes.

Impressing, Inspiring,Uplifting and Magical! Four words that make up the whole album-as the first of its kind for Jahnesta, I hope that he receives the respect that he deserves for taking Haitian music to the next level!

"JAH NESTA: The group to catch at this weekend's International Reggae Festival in Montréal"

2004-06-18

Haitian group JAH NESTA will stand out at this weekend's International Reggae Festival in Montréal.

Montreal- Whenn he came to Montreal for theh first time, a few months ago, JAH NESTA simply fell in love with the city. At t29 years old,, the young Haitian lad & Bob Marley disciple had everything to make it big in the United States. The American college education,, the magic kick on the soccer field, good looks à la The Gap and of course, that talent.

But it's in his homeland, the pearls of the Antilles, that JAH NESTA found his inspiration for writing and the contagious energy to jumpstrart his musical career. in fact,, with his band of the same name, JAH NESTA is more than an ambassador of music. He is a messenger with prophetic qualities. His words are hymns of love, promise of hope and outcries of injustice JAH NESTA spreads the love in French & in Creole, the country's two languages.

The band has packed concerts halls all across Haiti. It is now packing up for the summer, only for a stop in montreal but also one in Paris and one in Barcelona.

JAH NESTA drops anchor in Montreal for the City's first International Reggae Festival. With songs from their first album "Solda Jah" , the band members will awaken the Rastafarian in you.

A lead singer, ten musicians and vocalists, one love. - Martine St-Victor

Bio

In November of 2003, Jahnesta's first album came out with ten(10) hits, all loaded with powerful, inspiring messages but at the same time light and almost aerial in their tune.
This was a new adventure for the group, a fresh breath long awaited by the public.
If the title "Reggae Soldiers" is sometimes attributed to the group, the CD's title"Solda Jah" clearly symbolizes the group's leader, Alain Moraille. it encompasses his vision and his stand. His authentic style, his contagious melodies and his universal charisma have already conceded to the group the right to affix the seal of success on their music, in a world that has become increasingly competitive.

Alain Moraille a.k.a.Jahnesta, is the catalyst of the group he has truly concretized the dream that he has ceaselessly strirred in his soul for several years. He remembers having caught the reggae virus from his uncles when he was only five years old. These relatives then teenagers made him listen to Bob Marley's mythical "Natty Dread" on the old phonograph perched in his grandmother's living room in Place Boyer in the town of PĂŠtion-Ville a suburb of the Haitian Capital.
While other children of his age only decorated their rooms with posters of Mickey Mousse,Spiderman and other "made in US" childhood gadgets, the walls of his bedroom were lined with Bob Marley's pictures that he secretly cut out from the newspapers that his "older" uncles inadvertently left around. Very soon, he had memorized all the hits, and every time an opportunity came up, he asked that a LP or a cassette of the "King" be given to him as a gift.
In a kind of progressive spiral, a concatenation of events resulted in Alain's shy strumming an old accoustic guitar when he was 17, and this gesture served him as premonitory musical stepping stone...During that same year, under the instructive guidance of Daddy Beaubrun(Bass player of the Boukman Eksperyans band), his "live" solo interpretation Of "Redemption Song" made the winner of a talent show at "CafĂŠ des Arts" , a well known entertainement place it is there that the path to Music opened up before him.
