Jacob's Well: Distorted View
CD Review
Perhaps you have heard of a guy named Scott Stapp and a little band named Creed. In the same vein, enough to draw comparison anyway, comes Jacob’s Well from Fort Wayne. Recently, the band submitted their CD Distorted View to me for review. I wasn’t sure what to expect having never heard the band and not knowing anything really about them. Their press packet gave me a pretty good idea of what to expect right away describing themselves as a “Christian Band with an Alternative Sound.” The message and in turn their mission statement refines this even further by saying that they are “a group of men and their families lifting up Jesus that lost souls and backslidden believers may find their way home.”

I must admit, I am not much of a religious person—and more than likely I fall directly into the category of people that the band is trying to reach. I digress however, as my true purpose here is to tell you about the music. Well, I must admit the 12 song album starts off fairly strongly with an ethereal sounding guitar and a distorted prayer. Very cool way to kick it off. Keep Me From Falling is the lead off track and is very solid in both style and message. It is followed up with Trust, which again conveys a very clear message while backed with strong driving guitars and good percussion work. Key’s are added for flavor on the next track, Blind Man. While not one of the stronger tracks on the album, the message remains very clear and relies on the strength of the vocals to really get that across to the listener. The acoustic fueled I Will Go speaks of devotion to the Lord, and is as consistent as the previous tracks. One of the most fun tracks is 8:26 which contains samples of on old sixty's surfing tune (sorry the name of the actual song escapes me right now). The strength of musicianship, as well as the message is constant throughout the rest of the album and is capped at the end by a tune simply called New Song--with a nice, children-lead chorus at the very tail end.

I don’t want to break down each track for you, gentle reader. What you need to know about Jacob’s Well is that these six men: Darrell Lummer (vox & keys), Gregory Andrews (vox & bass), Jeff Brooks (percussion), Bob Caspar (Rythm Guitar), Sam Monk (lead guitar, harmonica & vox) and Tim Kiess (sound); are a solid, solid group of musicians. In my humble opinion, there music will appeal to more religiously oriented people—but as I previously mentioned, their goal is to speak to those who may have fallen out of religion’s favor.

You might not see Jacob’s Well at Columbia Street or Legend’s any time soon, but if they visit your church or other place of worship, you should feel fortunate, as you are hearing some really good stuff.

Brandan

"2006 Debut CD Review: Jacob's Well - Who Is This..."

Jacob's Well –

Rock, with a Soul/R&B Twist and a Message..... Recently I sat down with several members of Jacob's Well to talk about their music. The band consists of members, Gregory Andrews, Darrell Lummer, Bob Caspar, Sam Monk, Jeff Brooks and Tim Kiess. The band describes their music as "rock with a positive message". As you will quickly see from a visit to their website, at www.jacobswelltheband.com, this positive message is Christian at its core. These Nashville recording artists call Fort Wayne, Indiana their home, and met at their former church, Calvary Temple. The current configuration of the band has been in place for two years.

Granted, many of you may immediately turn off when you hear the words "Christian Music" and in truth, it's not always my first choice for listening. But if you're expecting a syrupy-sweet, orchestral sounding choir, you'd be much mistaken here. Nor is Jacob's Well just more of the charismatic "Christian Music" movement. This is true Rock, with a Soul and R&B groove behind it that sets your foot tapping and your body itching to dance. Just ask Sam Monk, lead guitarist, and he'll tell you - they prefer to play at venues where they don't have to worry about cranking the volume up full blast and rockin' it out.

The band has just recorded, and is due to release their latest CD, "Who Is This", which contains 12 outstanding original tracks. From the first track "One Way", through my personal favorite, "He Loves Me Not" to the title track, set at number six on the CD, "Who Is This" the band manages to tell their Christian based, positive message through undulating rhythm, exacting bass and lead guitar licks and energetic vocals. Gregory Andrews' lead vocals are responsible for adding a great deal of the R&B and soul feel to the band's music, and Jeff Brooks on drums keeps the beat steady and full. Darrell Lummer's raspier voice lends a hard edge to the blues and rock side of the band, and whether you're a fan of "Christian music" or not, you'll find this CD and this band hard to beat. And, frankly aren't we all a little tired of bands whose vocabulary and vocal ability only lend themselves to screaming the "F" word into the microphone to a pounding steady beat ! You won't find that here, nor will you find anything remotely reminding you of your days in the church choir. Gregory tells me that other reviewers have said this group sounds like Pearl Jam, STP, Seven Dust and Creed but with 4 part harmony. I'd have to agree with that assessment. And the harmony among these band members is incredible - both vocally and instrumentally.

Jacob's Well harkens back to the glory days of rock, when the songs told a message, to an up- beat and varied rhythm, filled with meaning, rising to a crescendo and rocking' you into the groove – and somehow you find yourself years later, remembering where you were when you first heard ‘that' song.

The group performs live throughout the central Indiana region, and have a large following in and around Indianapolis. Most recently in Fort Wayne, they have been featured at Come2Go on Baker Street, and are due to appear in the next few weeks at the Cupbearer in Auburn, Indiana. You can find the band's music online at their website, www.jacobswelltheband.com, on their myspace site, www.myspace.com/jacobswelltheband, and also on Purevolume, Sonicbits, and I- sound to name a few. Their CDs are available for sale online, and also wherever the band appears in person.

The harmonies and original lyrics are superbly done, and the guitar licks, bass, drums and keyboard are as good as you'll hear anywhere. So, if you've been biased against picking up a "Christian" music CD before this time, you should overlook that bias and take a listen to this soon to be released CD, entitled "Who Is This", which showcases the fine talent of this band, and just may change your mind about what you can expect from a "Christian" group.

"WHATZUP"

It's gotta be tough to be an original heavy Christian rock band in Fort Wayne. I mean, your moderately-drinking-at-best audience will keep you from getting most bar gigs and your distortion pedal and drum kit will keep you out of Anchor Room and many churches. Despite such daunting challenges, Jacob's Well have persisted in their mission of providing "alternative rock with positive lyrics" directed at "the unbeliever or the backslidden believer." The release of Distorted View, recorded under the loving fist of Tim Bushong, makes their songs available to a wider audience.
The opening track, "Keep Me From Falling," is definitely the best of the bunch. Combining a hooky melody, upbeat rock, the more soulful of the bands four vocalists (bassist and ex-payment processor Greg Andrews), modern guitars, and an amalgam of 80s metal and Jars of Clay, the chorus is sure to stick in your head as it has mine with a single listen. "Trust" begins with eerie keys and atmospheric guitars that drop into a heavier chorus of inventive drumming by Charles Thomas. A muscular chorus and gutsy guitar riff by Robert Caspar, along with lead vocalist Darrell Lummer's emotive voice makes "He Loves Me Not" a very engaging and atmospheric song with lots of spine-tingling impact. Shifting into classic power ballad mode with "I Will Go," the band opens with clean guitars, eventually shifting to heavy distortion and a great chance for lead guitarist Samuel Monk to lay down some very melodic and uplifting lines. Other songs explore 60s rock, Bible school classics, praise anthems and lonely western music, all approached from a foundation of rock.
Overall the musicianship is extremely solid. It's obvious that these men have logged years of experience with their instruments and can play a variety of styles with ease. Their vocal harmonies, rich and intriguing, are among the strongest I've heard on a local release and are alone worth the price of admission. Lyrically Jacob's Well are a bit more proselytizing than, say, Creed or Jars of Clay, but it's always in a positive, encouraging manner. The songwriting balances deftly between modern and 80s metal, often with nostalgia winning out. Fans of such classic hard rock should drink deep from this well, and there's no better time than 6:30 on October 25 at the CD release party held at the Anchor Room. - by Jason Hoffman

"The Wreck"

December 15, 2003

This letter is in regards to the band, Jacobs Well.

Jacobs Well has played The Wreck several times in the past five years. They have been a wonderful inspiration to the teens who have heard them. The last time they played, they were the headliner for our 5th Annual Battle of the Bands in My 2003. They were great. They drew the crowd in through their energy and excitement. As they did this, they also shared the love of Jesus with the teens. We have been well satisfied with Jacobs Well and look forward to having them with us again.

On a personal note, the members of this band and their families are warm and giving beyond belief. They truly live and walk their talk. They spend an enormous amount of time just hanging with the teens and getting to know them. And they don't forget who they have met. They are a great asset to the kingdom of God.

The Wreck is a Christian coffeehouse and concert venue run by teens for teens. It is an honor to recommend Jacobs Well for any potential concert dates.

Sincerely,

Cheri King

"Letter of Recommendation"

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing a letter of recommendation for Jacob’s Well, a band of six dedicated and talented men who have set themselves aside for our Master’s use. I need to let you know—up front—that I am biased because I know these men and their families on a personal level. I have watched them grow in the midst of life’s struggles, and I have seen their commitment to family, Christ, their local church, and their love for music. This isn’t just “a band” to me … they are servants of the living Christ who are acting upon their calling and releasing their exceptional gifts to the mission God has given them. I am extremely proud of them, I have a long-standing relationship with them, and I am privileged to be their pastor.

The band’s mission has totally captivated my heart. They reach beyond the walls of the church to call those lost in the race back to the only One who can offer living water. I love their name because it speaks of the mission of Christ in Samaria (John 4). Jesus sat by Jacob’s well, encountered a woman with who no one else had time, and led her to a soul-satisfying encounter with God. Something stirs deep within me that this is right and is what believers need to be about with every means possible.

The musical talent of Jacob’s Well is obvious, and those who love “alternative” music will enjoy the originality that is presented with excellence. In fact, I am listening to their CD, “Distorted View,” as I write this reference and even for a non-rocker Pastor – this music is really good!

I recommend Jacob’s Well for any venue in which you want to let your community know that Jesus is real and relevant to today’s world. The lyrics of their songs speak of the heart’s journey—something with which we can all identify—and they use Biblical answers to today’s questions woven into a modern sound that is both interesting and fun.

First Assembly has used them as our worship band and at church events.
I can assure you that you won’t be embarrassed or disappointed in the message or quality of Jacob’s Well!

In His service,

Rev. Ronald L. Hawkins

"Letter of Recommendation"

To Whom It May Concern,

It is a pleasure to be writing this letter of recommendation on behalf of Jacobs Well - The Band. These guys are an "exceptional group of guys both on and off the stage.
Off the stage, these guys are committed, "Sold Out" husbands, fathers, and disciples of the King Of Kings and the Lord Of Lords. They dont just talk it, they walk it. They demonstrate excellence without arrrogance. These guys are the "Real Deal".

Musically, Jacobs Well, with their recent release of 'Who Is This" has proven that these guys are out of the box creatively....The Beatles, Creed and Third day all in one.
I personally love the cd and have seen from their live shows that they uniquely reach the young and old and as awesome as "Who Is This" is, they are even better live as they "minister" through the music. They come with a message, A relevant message for today.

Needless to say, I love Jacobs Well as a band and as great men of integrity and purpose.

They have played for both Freiman Square Ministries and for me in private settings. I would recommend Jacob's Well in any setting where you would want Jesus magnified or for secular audiences who will leave "wide-eyed" and touched.

Jacob's Well has been called, appointed and annointed for such a time as this.

Humbly His,

Pastor Ron Bodendorf

Musicianship – 8 out of 10
Jacob’s Well’s music covers a full spectrum of sound! In particular, I feel that they have a very solid rhythm section in Greg Andrews (bass) and Jeff Brooks (drums/percussion). They lay down a solid foundation for the melodic work of guitarist Bob Caspar, guitar/harp player Samuel Monk, and keyboardist Darrell Lummer. On the rock tunes, the guitars are nice and edgy, while they find the right tone/balance on the ballads and worship tunes as well. Each member is a skilled musician with an excellent sound! Additionally, they sport tight vocal arrangements, and are able to deliver their message via powerful, crisp and clear vocals! Though I wouldn’t classify the band as one of the best I’ve ever heard, I feel that they are hard-working, dedicated individuals that have done very well for themselves! In the end, when I take the time to hear a band’s CD more than once, you have to know that there’s something there that has captured my attention! With future releases, I definitely think the band will improve!

Songwriting – 8 out of 10
I like Jacob’s Well as a band, but I have to admit that I found the level of songwriting to be a bit amateurish. Honestly, I think it’s probably the fact that the band limits their scope of subject matter pretty severely – I don’t have anything against the content of their lyrics, but I feel like they could expand their universe by leaps and bounds if they would approach Christianity from the perspective of life experience, rather than from the perspective of truth-telling. Am I being overly picky? Probably. But for me, I’m just telling it like it is. I’ve been in Christian bands, and I’ve written songs like the ones found on Who is This… As I listen back to some of those songs now, they seem to scratch at the surface of something that was intensely personal to me, and if I had only told the same story from the perspective of my life, I think that the songs would have been much better! Same deal here, and I hope that the criticism is taken constructively!

Sound Quality/Professionalism – 8.5 out of 10
Who is This… is a great-sounding CD! Well-mixed and professionally produced, it is a CD that the band should be very proud of. They blend several different styles of music well, without producing huge gaps that take the listener by surprise. If the band sounds half this good live, I’d definitely like to see them perform someday!

Packaging – n/a out of 10
Since I received a promo copy of Who is This…, I didn’t receive all of the packaging. Therefore, I am declining to comment on the packaging.

I suck sometimes at conveying the way that I feel about a band’s music. To look at this review, I know that some people will feel that I was overly critical, and yet, that isn’t really the way I feel about Jacob’s Well! If anything, I respect the members of the band as musicians and as men with a mission! There are places on the CD where I feel there is room for improvement, but overall, the band produced a solid effort in Who Is This… If you enjoy Christian music with an edge, this is the CD for you! If you are looking for music with a positive message, then once again, this is the CD for you! Finally, if you are searching for something different in your life, then I think that you would be well served to hear what these guys have to say! They speak their faith in a way that is uplifting and non-threatening. I encourage you to check their music out!
