"Album Review"

Album reviewed by: Andrew Maffettone (Founder/CEO)

Mystery is a hip-hop artist from Michigan and his album “Black Lights” is his debut album. Hip-hop is a saturated genre with more independent artists than any other genre and Mystery is just doing what he can to stand out among everyone else. This album is full of heavy-hitting beats and plenty of metaphorical lyrics.
Starting off with the first track on the album “Automatic”, you can see form this starting track it is going to be an upbeat, in your face, album. Each beat complimenting each lyric he comes at you with his speedy rapping. Following right behind is “Cheer For Me” which is a song about the problems Mystery had getting to where he is now. It seems that if you’re in hip-hop you have to have a track like this discussing all of the troubles you went through to get where you are now. “Skirt Off” is featuring Dlo and their clever lyrics are accompanied by a typical hip-hop beat with intricate hi-hat hits and hard hitting bass. Dlo does his part by adding to the track and he seems to accompany the flow of this particular track very well with a slightly slower approach to his rapping. Another song on this album with a featured spot is “I’m Eating” with an appearance by Uncle Pauly. The track is filled with tons of metaphors and small additive quips towards Mystery’s enemies. When Uncle Pauly comes in he adds his own style to the song that picks up the overall emotion of the song. Moving further into the album is “Like Da Sun”, this particular track is not featuring another artist but is done solo. This song is more headed towards keeping a riot vibe, the overall feel is to get you up a revolt. The high beats and heavy instrumentals keep you nodding your head throughout the track. “When I Look At You” closes out the album with special guest vocals by Colossal. The chorus is a females vocals that are not exactly the best. They seem sang too low and turned up too high in the mix. Once Colossal comes in he turns the song in another direction, he is a very talented individual who has some serious skill with his rhyming.
Overall the album is good, it has a few points that could be tweaked with the production value and some of the vocals. Lyrically it was good but it does come off as a stereotypical album. Considering this is a debut album and Mystery is just starting out this is a great way to do it. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of Mystery in the future and I can’t wait to see what he brings to the table next. - Bombshellstavern.org
