Bio
J. Liberio didn’t always think that a career in music was possible, but he does now. After stints on The Voice Season 4, honing his craft on Vancouver-based cruise ships, and sharing the stage with Justin Bieber, this vocalist and multi-instrumentalist has created a sound of his own.
And after playing over 300 shows in 2014 and continuing that streak into 2015, he’s building a fanbase for his loop-based performances and unique style. Often performing a mix of originals and covers, Liberio looks beyond Top 40 and searches for songs both new and old that have the same feel. He also knows his strengths, and blends these songs to fit his aesthetic while maintaining the [core] of each song. An avid music listener, he enjoys blending genres and describes his music as “Adele meets EDM with a hip hop beat”.
Liberio is now known for using a loop pedal and building a band around himself, but it wasn’t always that way. After building a band for a gig but the players not working out long-term, he took inspiration from Ed Sheeran’s approach to a live show. He bought a loop pedal and began learning how to integrate it into his gigs, often sharing with concert-goers how he builds his backing band: himself.
Taking inspiration from a wide variety of musicians and songwriters has helped Liberio create his unique sound. Artists like Billy Joel, Whitney Houston, Chris Cornell, and Adam Levine have inspired him in different ways, and he’s used that to write music that stands out.
He’s currently working on an EP of originals, “Dichotomy”, that he is producing himself. It will feature primarily new music, but also some older music that he’s previously never produced. 2016 will also feature playing multiple shows a week, sometimes with a full band and sometimes continuing his loop-based solo show.
J. Liberio is the example of a singer/songwriter with the drive, passion, and work ethic it takes to be seen in a busy music landscape. “Dichotomy” is described as “a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different”, which is how Liberio has created his music to stand out.
