"Artist To Watch"

With the emergence of social media, our lives are much more intertwined. Social Media makes it so easy to connect with people around the globe. The beauty of social media is that it brings together people who share many of the same interests, one of those interest being music. Hashtags has made finding the outfit of the day (#ootd), hottest shoes (#versace), and even new and emerging indie artist (#indieartist; #indiemusic) easier.

Being a music aficionado, I can say that I have a good ear for quality music, which speaks to the soul. I came across a young man, with a unique sound, a voice that is timeless, and music that feels good. His voice can be compared to the likes of Eddie Kendricks, mixed with David Ruffin, and a little bit of Marvin Gaye.

Meet J. Charles Bucks

Hometown: Memphis, TN

Genre: Soul

Comparison: David Ruffin

J. Charles Buck’s music is timeless and his voice is one that listeners will never grow tired of. With an old soul, his voice takes you back to an era, where quality lyrics meant more than an image. Coming from the blues capital Memphis, TN., he infuses jazz, blues, and R&B with gospel undertones. Right from track one, you will feel his music resonate way down in your soul. Mr. Buck is what I would like to call a lyricist, and in today’s industry, that’s a rare find. His album, “The J. Buck Experience,” is available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Music, and Googleplay. After listening to his entire album, I am having a hard time choosing which song is my favorite, but I would have to say that it is a tie between “Find Another You” and “God is Good.”

His music not only inspires, but it also soothes, and will keep the toes tapping while on steady repeat. He is a former lead singer of the neo-soul trio from Murfreesboro, TN., named Mocha Latte. It was there where Bucks was able to stand out with his sultry voice, and unforgettable performances. He gives the audience what they want, what they need, and a listening experience that they won’t forget. You can keep up with Mr. Buck on Instagram, @j.buckmusic), and on his website at www.jbuckmusic.com. His new LP, Love Matters is scheduled to be released this upcoming May. - The Black Juice

"Album Review"

MTSU alumnus Josh Buck’s music features a blend of R&B, soul, blues and pop to create something that sounds like it came straight out of Muscle Shoals. The sound takes root at the very start of the Memphis-based musician’s debut EP, The J. Buck Experience.

The project’s opening interlude is a short and gritty one-minute cut that finds Buck, a former member of local neo-soul group Mocha Latte, repeating the refrain of “I walk alone” over a stomping, Southern rock and funk-inspired guitar riff. The rock influence is even more prevalent on the following tracks “Make You Stay” and “In Need.” Both feature lyrics about relationships coming to an end, but give off two different vibes. “In Need” is a bluesy rocker with call and response vocals and a ripping guitar solo that would sound right at home pouring out of B.B. King’s or the Rum Boogie Cafe on Beale Street. “Make You Stay” features a soaring R&B/pop chorus that steps away from the Southern-rock influences and hints at the vibe of the EP’s second half.

Midway through the EP, the stylistic focus shifts from rock and blues to R&B, soul and gospel. On the album closer, “God Is Good,” Buck’s passionate vocals cruise atop piano, with a hint of blues guitar in the back of the mix. A religious element also pops up on the track “Somebody,” a melodically strong, mid-tempo cut with a blend of R&B vocals, bluesy instruments and a reflective lyric:

Somebody up there loves me
I can tell by the way my heart beats
Somebody up there cares for me
I can tell by the way I breathe.

The EP’s mid-point comes on the track “What We Gon’ Do?” a ballad focusing on the hardships the world faces delivered in a style akin to What’s Goin’ On-era Marvin Gaye. J. Buck may not yet be at the same level as Marvin Gaye and the like, but you can tell that’s where he’s striving to be, and The J. Buck Experience is a solid first step in that direction. - Murfreesboro Pulse

"Artists on the Rise"

"Your album is so relatable and it touches on so many subjects that I think people, especially in our age group being the mid twenties, can feel." - Prospective Media Management

"Artist Spotlight"

Hailing from Rhythm and Blues capital of the south, Memphis, TN, Josh Buck is no stranger to either genre, but most importantly, he’s no stranger to soul music. As an alumni of Middle Tennessee State University, Josh has really made a name for himself in the local Murfreesboro Community. I had the pleasure of singing next to this vocal genius in the former Neo-Soul band, Mocha Latte. Seriously ya’ll, this brother has a powerful set of vocals on him. His voice is best described as a mixture of a bluesy tone infused with R&B runs that will leave the brothers speechless and the ladies wanting more. For those that need a more visual description, imagine if Marvin Gaye and David Ruffin had a baby. Well I have news for you, the spirit of that musically blessed baby is manifested in Josh Buck.

As weird and unorthodox and on most levels, just wrong, as that may sound, think about the vocal capacity and ridiculous range that child would have. Can you hear it? Well if you can it is because you have listened to this songwriter perform at one of the many live and intimate settings such as the Xperience Lounge in Murfreesboro, TN. If you can’t envision how ridiculous and musically ingenious that combination is, then I urge you to clear you calendar for next Sunday, January 25 at 7:30pm and make your way to Tempt Nightclub in Murfreesboro, TN to show this artist some major love. I guarantee you from the first note to the last run, you will love his style and his stage presence that will keep you engaged from start to finish. The music heavens have heard my plea for better music and more soul, through the use of this talented brother. Not only will his music bless you, but his personality and humble mannerism will tug at your heart and make you a true and loyal fan. So thank you Josh, for making me believe in music again and inspiring me to pick up a pen, grab my keyboard and pour my soul onto my notepad. I guess music isn’t quite dead after all!
