“It was two-and-a-half weeks with no care in the world,” Paul Trammell, guitarist for I-Vibes, a local reggae outfit, said of the band’s recent tour through Florida, Tennessee, West Virginia and North Carolina.
“We all had the time of our lives.” Trammell, along with fellow guitarist Jon Foster, are sitting at Trammell’s house on the Island reminiscing about the tour that took them from Florida to Tennessee and included BB Guns, Moonshine, stolen 50 gallon jugs of vegetable oil, river bathing and lots and lots of music. In late May, a half-dozen I-Vibes band members boarded the black, white and red Lighthouse Music Bus (painted to look like the St. Augustine Lighthouse) with bus owner, Davis Hart, at the helm.
According to Foster, the bus, which runs on vegetable oil, “smells kinda like a combination of all of the different fast foods.”In 2008, I-Vibes formed in St. Augustine Beach out of a collection of members from bands like The Credentials, Scholar’s Word, Chillakaya and Individually United.
Today, I-Vibes is made up of Trammell, Foster, Jason Vallone (vocals), Josiah Hassel (drums), Rob Nevins (bass), Jamie McLean (sax/vocals/percussion) and Ryan Murray-Laird, who played bass on the recent tour. By day, the guys pay the bills as a house painter, carpenter, business owner, pirate ship actor and organic farmer.
By night, I-Vibes plays gigs at venues like Jack’s BBQ and Panama Hatties in St. Augustine, and Dick’s Wings in Jacksonville Beach.
They also just released their self-funded, self-titled debut album recorded at Toes in the Sand Recording. The seven-track disc features original tunes like “Gimme a Little Lovin’,” “Upon the Kette,” “Ital Farmer” and “As I Sing.” Trammell said the guys were pretty well rehearsed when they got into the studio.
“I’m very impressed with how the album came out – the professionalism and sound quality is awesome.”With influences like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Toots and the Maytals and Jimmy Cliff, I-Vibes creates feel-good, danceable music with a positive message.
“We feel a momentum has picked up and we’re starting to see the same faces over and over,” Trammell admitted of a growing loyal fan base.
