Greater Space

Greater Space originated as a two-piece band from Tacoma, Washington, although later to become a solo project with hired help after the departure of the band's original drummer. Frontman Josh Kelly was born on Oahu, Hawaii, and as a military brat he moved from place to place until finally settling in Washington State to pursue his music career.

Vulnerable to the circumstances life brought, Josh started writing songs at the age of 15 and hasn't stopped ever since. Somewhere along the way the decision was made to share his music with the world as a full-fledged professional band musician. Although with years spent trying to balance responsibilities and passion, Josh struggled to make enough time to tend to his craft. But the aspirations never died. Music provided the perfect outlet to express thoughts and feelings kept deep inside. Something switched and suddenly there was nothing Josh was doing that wasn't propelling him forward in these endeavors. A strong but emotionally inept young man broke free from the cage of depression to speak of his experiences from an outside, relatable point of view. That's where Greater Space's music began. Starting as something bigger, or rather "Greater" than one individual story. A story of universal greatness. Of all the band names he brainstormed with his friends (Cherry, Indigo Trademark, Silent Spaces), Greater Space was the one that resonated most with what Josh wanted to communicate with his art.

As for the songs; lyrically inspiring introspective thoughts about life, love, and personal hardships. Music that unleashes memories both traumatic and joyful is what follows. If listened to closely, you can hear the yearning for success and happiness in Josh’s voice as he sings his debut single, “Gimme Something (Fire).” Being emotionally driven, the song is delivered in a way that you can picture “the light at the end of the tunnel.” To get to that destination is the ultimate goal, but to bring as many people along for the ride is what he desires.

The unique pop-rock style of Greater Space songs was influenced by highly idolized bands like The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Josh believes a catchy hook is better at getting a deeper message across in a mass-appealing way. He took to that pop format, and with his love for classic rock and respect for modern indie rock, he took off with it!

So, is it another sob story about how music saved an artist from his internal conflict? Maybe. But it’s also a story where the protagonist wants to lift others out of their own dark places. This “Greater” message can clearly be heard by those it was meant to reach.
