Music Review: Tia P
Yeah I’ve been on my female rapper ish lately. Not just because I’ve always been fond of the X chromosome spitters, but more because they’ve been a lot more interesting. One in particular who I came across in the Twitter feed of the lil homey @fuzethemc is Tia P. This young talent is interesting to me on a several levels. Yes music is the main interest but her layers made me want to write about her. Little miss Parchman really has her head screwed on tight! Her bio makes it clear she’s being very realistic about the idiosyncrasies of the music business and being prepared for “real life” in general. The senior at Howard University (psychology major/music minor) has more tricks tucked in her slim 5ft frame than 90% of the up and comers on today’s music blogs. Rapper, drummer, producer, songwriter, and singer are just a few of the talents she’s letting be known at this point. I get a strong feeling Tia P has a few more surprises that we’ll see once she secures a solid situation. I dig her conversation, she has something to say in all of her songs which allows the listener to connect with her music or at least relate. It may be hard to fathom for some but not everyone breathing is driving hot cars, wearing or care to wear the latest high end fashion, flying in private jets, adorned in ridiculously gaudy and overpriced jewelry and vacationing on the most luxurious and exclusive of island resorts. Some are ok with just chilling, enjoying life, love and possibly seeing the motherland which is epitomized in her song Africa.
It’s nice to hear a rapper (especially female) her age speak on real life subject matters that are relevant to her generation. With titles like; In A Perfect World where she displays an Aaliyah like sweetness with her vocal tone on the chorus but it’s all about the content when she raps that makes this song shine. On University she takes ATCQ’s Bonita Applebum to an educational level that comes off like the coolest PSA I’ve heard in a while (no corn here). No Mirrors is an extremely honest song that finds the femcee exercising her vocal ability start to finish and although there are a few not so perfect vocal moments throughout the song but the imperfections are the very thing that make the song that much more honest. Just the opposite is the chorus of I’m Already Tomorrow (dope title) where Tia P not only kills it with a thickness that would make Jasmine Sullivan proud but her flow is on 10! I love this one. After listening to all of the songs on her Soundcloud page, I can admit Tia P has a few less than perfect quality production moments. Sometimes it’s the music mix other times the vocal mix, but in a strange way, you can appreciate these moments. On her level a few flaws are expected and realistic. One thing that’s glowingly obvious about this up and comer is she’s astoundingly realistic. On a lighter note Shirt & Drawers Productions is funny. Notable songs include: Hustle To Hustle, Til I Die (remix), So Good To Be Me, So It Goes and Rap & Roll.

To anyone who still believes females can’t rap, allow us to introduce you to rapper, drummer, singer and Inglewood native Tia P. She is not your average, “cookie-cutter girl.” Since age six, she has continued to make her point that girls can be “dope” rappers and song writers too.
When the Sentinel last spoke with artist Tia P, she was getting ready to perform the song she wrote called, Mobbin’ & Wildin’ on the 94.7 the Wave stage at Taste of Soul 2015.
After performing in front of thousands of people at L.A.’s largest street festival, doors have continued to open for her.
She has gone on to secure a publishing deal with Riptide music, appeared in several commercial and print ads, and performed at sold out shows. In October, she was given the opportunity of a lifetime. When the opportunity presented itself to work alongside singer Tori Kelly, which allowed her to appear in her first national Pepsi commercial.

“My pastor [at Faithful Central] always said be careful what you wish for, because when God starts opening doors, it will be fast, you won’t know where it came from, and that’s how it’s been since StarQuest,” said Tia P.
Her religion has played a major role in her willingness to remain humble and grateful for the doors God has opened for her.
“I just feel blessed. Music itself is your creativity, but it’s meant to be selfless. Once you create it and mold it, it’s not meant to be kept,” said Tia P. “My music is very hands on. I write my own material, I do collab with writers, artists, producers. I write all my music and produce all my music. As an artist, it was very important to me that people know… I keep my hands in whatever I’m doing.”
Before Tia P completely devoted her life to creating music for her fans, she attended Howard University, it was there that she graduated with a degree in Psychology with a music minor.
When she isn’t writing music, playing music, in the studio, or on set of commercials, Team Tia P fans can find her enjoying life.

“I like to go to the movies, watching Netflix, going for runs at 6 in the morning with my dog, spending time with my grandma, and just chilling,” said Tia P.
What’s next for the talented lyricist?
“[My fans] can expect to see me on a TV show that involves Will.i.am, as well as the release of my new single, ‘Four Seats from Beyoncé’ which drops on the 16th and an EP shortly after that called ‘Peekabo Part 1’,” said Tia P.
Five years from now, the artist plans to be on her very own world tour, and begin launching her t-shirt and hat brand company called Create Your Own Opportunities (C.Y.O.O.)
To artist who are considering participating in the 2016 Taste of Soul StarQuest competition, Tia P has a few words of wisdom.
“Do it and don’t hold back. No matter how large, small or mediocre your platform may be, don’t take the stage for granted. Everybody doesn’t get that opportunity. If you enjoy your music, and you believe in yourself as an artist, then people will believe it. If you have fun, they will have fun. Bask in it, have fun and do you.”
