From indie rock to death metal to hip hop/punk
and everything in between, Band Nite at The Art
Studio Inc. has a long-standing tradition of giving
new bands a welcoming venue to bring original
music to new fans.
“You never know what to expect,” said Olivia
Busceme, who has handled Band Nite bookings on
and off for the past seven years. “We often have
bands that are brand new, just starting out, so it
can be a good time to discover new things.”
Busceme, 24, has been a regular at monthly Band
Nites since she was a small child carried in by her
parents, but started paying attention about 12
years ago.
“I think it’s really cool that you can see a lot of
different types of bands all in one place. It’s not just
one type of music or one group of people. It’s a lot
of different crowds mixed together, so that’s nice,”
she said.
A typical Band Nite might include everyone from
a group of middle school or high school students
playing their first gig with their first garage band to
the friends, parents, and grandparents of the band
members to local music lovers ready to dance.
“It’s a learning experience for a lot of new bands,
learning how to promote their shows. It’s become
a very classic Beaumont first gig,” Busceme said.
Busceme’s formula for booking Band Nites is
simple. “We pretty much book whoever wants to
play, the only qualification being that they write
their own music. As long as it’s not a cover band,
we’ll book them.”
Out-of-town musicians passing through South
-
east Texas are also on the bill for many Band Nites.
The August line-up includes a hip hop band from
Houston, indie/punk from Austin and a folk banjo
player from Alabama along with a Beaumont rock
band.
Fans gather to hear bands jam in a space that
normally serves as a workroom for ceramic art
-
ists and students. The section of the converted
warehouse that doubles as a music venue
does not have air conditioning, so Band Nite
regulars know to dress appropriately for the
outside temperature. Shows are open to all
ages, and those of legal age can bring their
own adult beverages.
All are welcome at Band Nite, Busceme
stressed. “You’ll probably meet somebody
cool, and you’ll definitely have some good
music to enjoy. - Beth Gallaspy
