High Heels Lo Fi

What is drunk rock, you ask? For those familiar with the antics of Richard Cheese and his band Lounge Against The Machine, you’re halfway there already. For the unfamiliar, imagine if “Weird Al” Yankovic wrote all original material while utterly drunk for three weeks and listening to The Runaways and Kiss for inspiration. It’s a simple equation, really: rock music for and about drinking. Sex, booze and one night stands: High Heels Lo Fi cleverly capture the scene with tongues planted firmly in cheek and asses possibly hanging out of their stage outfits.

On their first full-length release, Apéritif For Dysfunction, High Heels Lo Fi offers up a mix of straight-up rock, coy come ons, affection for cocktails and, oh, yes, a cover of the theme song for The Littlest Hobo, just because they can. Shaken and stirred up, the trio of Cynthia Gould, Mandy Wells and Doug Lea are here for a good time (and a long time, if you keep the spirits flowing… and talk the bartender into not throwing everyone out for rowdiness).

Toronto's newest addition to the latter day's concept of Punk ethos is a local underground power punk sensation (I have seen them live and can vouch for this!!) is High Heels LoFi.

Even their songs indirectly promote the kind of DIY brand of punk pop sensibility such as Big Dumb Rock Songs (which is also the title of this five Song Ep/CD) and '10 more minutes' and 'Nerdy' even.

What High Heels LoFi brings to your party though is something Punk and post punk/grunge bands lack in spades which is a sense of humour couched in somewhat sardonic refrains and even self deprecating lyrical pastiches,(again Big Dumb Rock Songs is the apotheosis of this).

This rock trio of two gurls and one guy lead by lead singer Cynthia Gould are forever asking the question: How small is IT? WELL ... that is a good question. Garage glitz raunch rock band High Heels Lo Fi is revving up to launch their new EP All Sass No Class Kick Ass on February 23 at Cherry Cola’s – and my ears got a sneak preview of the record.

High Heels Lo Fi is: Cynthia Gould (vocals), Doug Lea (drums), Spacker Dave Vestaloyne (bass) and Jackie Moore (guitar); check out their bios. The sound is total kickass punk goodness – and these guys are a blast to watch live. I last saw them at Cherry Cola’s last week, and they were all wayward Catholic school girl with their plaid skirts and dirty mouths, rockin’ hard and reckless. And it was awesome!

The EP’s title All Sass No Class Kick Ass pretty much says it all. Gould’s vocals are cocky, sly and sexy – going from a deep growl to a ‘who’s your rough mamma’ come hither; and the instrumentals are loud, driving and tight. The EP playlist goes something like this:

“Get Me Some” – A rawkin’ and unapologetic punk seduction.
“Unfuckable” – Lust from afar turned to revulsion.
“Eff the Day Job” – A big fun drinking anthem featuring cowbell! (by Lucy)
“How Small is It?” – Calls out all the obnoxious ways certain men try to show what a big man they are – and how they give themselves away.
“Can’t Lose with Booze” – Full of cock and cocktails, a 2+ minute rawk out dance party to the band’s philosophy as a drinking problem with a punk band.

High Heels Lo Fi’s new EP, All Sass No Class Kick Ass is an ironic blend of serious rock ‘n’ roll styled attitude mixed with comedic lyrics and a variety show delivery that encourages you to knock back a drink or two and dance around. The five-song album successfully delivers to the trend in today’s music scene of short attention spans and immediate gratification. Don’t expect to experience any emotional breakthroughs listening to this album. It is not crafted with depth and reflection. No sentimental lyrics will linger in your cerebral matter. Instead be prepared to be swept away to a beer-guzzling, dancefloor-praising trance as you emulate the lovechild of Weird Al Yankovic-meets-Joan Jett-at-Vaudeville.



“Get Me Some” is the perfect way to introduce you to their style of music, with its seductive vocals and pounding drums. This loud and rowdy rock song has some seriously bloodthirsty bass work that creates a powerful and undeniable low end.

“Unfuckable” and “How Small is It?” both display why the band has received comparison rock goddess Joan Jett. These songs feature the bone crunching rhythm guitar and powerful vox that she was famed for.

I found myself asking, “is there ever enough cowbell?” as I was introduced to the catchy song, “Eff the Day Job”. This high-tempo standout possesses interesting guitar tones and lyrics that you are encouraged to sing along with: “Fuck the day job, lets get fucked tonight”. Enough said.

Sensitive, angst-driven music lovers need not be offended by this album’s lack of profound lyrics and earnest feelings. Give this album a spin when you need an escape from the mundane and unremarkable day-to-day routine.

If you are in the Toronto area, there is a good chance you will be able to catch them performing at a local venue near you. High Heels Lo Fi recently celebrated the release of this EP at Cherry Cola’s Rock ‘n’ Rolla Cabaret & Lounge and they were also featured as the resident band, every Tuesday night in the month of February, there.
