Look On High
by HeavenBound
Independent
Look on High by Denver-based gospel group, HeavenBound is a revival meeting set to music. The ten songs on the project hit all the theological high points you would expect from a Pentecostal Chautauqua, beginning with the easy, swaying, hands in the air call to worship, “You Must Seek Jesus,” and ending with a triumphant hymn of adoration.
The confessional, “Come Into My Heart,” takes on a mild disco beat, while “My Letter To You” returns to a more traditional Gospel swing vibe. The title cut is the most effective track on the album, showcasing gentle piano interludes, emotive lead vocals and perfectly understated choral background vocals, although “Emmanuel” gives it a run for its money.
HeavenBound is at its best when lead vocalist, George Blair is in the forefront. When he backs away the songs tend to loose their power and focus. “Let Us Lift Up Jesus” should have been a barnburner; instead it is less than inspirational. “Ain’t No Harm” gets the album back on track, however, and “Jesus, I Praise You” closes the album out in fine fashion.
