"Unraveled"

Singer/songwriter Heather Batchelor recently released her second EP of acoustic tunes, and if these six tracks are any example of what she can accomplish, it'll be a bright future for her...Unraveled has every element of a folk acoustic masterpiece. Heather has a knack for writing in such a way that you really don’t know what to expect, when. The instantly catchy “Fool Again” features a sultry, provocative chorus that really shows what she can do vocally. The beat and acoustic guitar are perfect underneath her passionate vocals, and you can tell she really dives into what she’s feeling. The songs on Unraveled came from a hard breakup, and it’s easy to tell on the simplistic ukelele-focused “Something To You”. “We weren’t the best thing ever done / I knew that I was never the one you wanted to end up with / so it was fun while it lasted / I’m okay with getting nothing / because I know that I meant / something to you”. That’s not the usual response we get from a breakup. Usually we’re frustrated, annoyed, and blaming. But Heather’s refreshing take reminds us of the good times, and focuses enough on it that we’re able to move on. “Chicago” is the opener, and rightly so, as it sets the tone for the mellow, laid back EP. Fun trivia: Heather has never been to Chicago. But as the song goes on, I know she’ll get there some day, and allow the city to envelope her. Simple fingerpicking mixed with another catchy chorus make the opener another instant favorite. Elsewhere, Heather taps into her jazz side, which is seen regularly in certain songs live, and it’s great to hear the tone show up on “You’ve Got A Way”. It’s a mix of soul and jazz, and really exemplifies her vocals in such a great way. “Let It Rain” is a beautiful cut, and Heather doesn’t let her vocals get in the way of the extraordinary musicianship she also has. Slowing it down to a piano ballad for the finale, “Wild” is where everything Heather does comes to full fruition, and she has captured such an intimate moment on this song. Her vocals are haunting; the piano is beautiful; and her words cut to the core, describing the growth we all go through regularly. - Justin Mabee, Locals Music - Locals Music
