Los Angeles, Californian four-piece Gypsum profess to belong to the soi-disant ‘witch-prog’ genre and, if Facebook is to be believed, have a Sapphire Jewell in their figurative crown. However, regardless of such omni-deprecating gibberish, with rhythmic accentuation reminiscent of a certain Stella Mozgawa and a chorus which brilliantly recalls fellow Californians Local Natives, Follow Me is as entrancing as the sound of a Rattenfänger’s pipe to the inner ears of children, rats, et cetera; a work of softened, psychedelic splendour, that’s sure to hypnotise and mesmerise in equal measure… - Dots and Dashes
Gypsum may be fresh to the music scene, but the LA-based post-rockers have plenty of promise. They’re sharing their art with the world today by premiering their soul-stirring debut track “Follow Me”. The song opens up with a mystical sound and continues to build with a pure and mesmerizing darkness. It has a haunting, eery feel to it, which is no surprise when discovering what the song is about. As the band’s drummer, Jessy Reed, explains, “The song is about running from something that’s hunting you. Something that’s hunting you just for existing.” This track is just one of many in the works for the Gypsum ladies, so it’s only the beginning of what’s to come. For now, check out the premiere for “Follow Me”, the debut track from Gypsum. - Sunset in the Rearview
The debut single from Los Angeles quartet Gypsum is a gorgeous one, full of chiming guitars and deceptively complex melodic invention. The band locks tight into an atmospheric groove for a flaw-free four minutes, leading the listener on a heavy harmonic journey. “Stay and you don’t stand a chance / So run,” pleads lead singer Sapphire Jewell over understated swells of indie rock instrumentation. Layered vocals and a tight rhythm section bring to mind the best of Warpaint and Deerhunter, making “Follow Me” is an impressive showing from a promising band. You can never have too many girl groups, especially one so instantly appealing. - The Wild Honey Pie
