Jake DeGuz is an emerging psychedelic bedroom pop musical prodigy and member of a minority of musicians who have self-distributed 3 LPs by the age of 18. Performing under the stage name Guspy, DeGuz finds inspiration in the likes of Kevin Parker, Steve Lacy, and Mac DeMarco, admiring their ability to write, record, and produce their music entirely themselves. Having taught himself how to play guitar, bass, drums, keys, and how to sing, DeGuz started cooking up music in his bedroom when he was 15, allegedly finding influence from an abnormal experience while singing and playing guitar to his dog. A fan of Los Angeles’s DIY punk culture, DeGuz learned how to mix solely through trial and error, crafting a signature tone of lo-fidelity that can only be reproduced in his bedroom. Or dorm, for DeGuz currently attends the University of Southern California, seeking to infiltrate the local DIY music scene and kick start his career.
Guspy draws inspiration from a plethora of genres, ranging from surf, reggae, psychedelic rock, jazz, blues, punk, and indie pop, beautifully crafting a unique concoction of sounds unparalleled elsewhere. While no song sounds the same, DeGuz’s signature sound, which he dubs “the succ”, resonates in every track he self-releases. DeGuz experiments with the boundaries of genres, defying categorization while maintaining clear sources of inspiration. For the last four years, his fanbase has enjoyed witnessing his youthful and spontaneous musical journey, connecting and forming relationships with the artist through his various social medias.
Born in Newport Beach but raised in Santa Ana, California, DeGuz proclaims a deep spiritual connection with the ocean, and an equally profound connection to the local Mexican food and Latinx surf rock scene. He attributes these connections to his grandfathers, one who ventured across the Pacific from the Philippines, and one who traveled across the border of Mexico. It is from these grandfathers where DeGuz received his first instruments, vintage hand-me-downs “probably worth too much for me to just be d*cking around on,” so he says.
