Greg Horne released his first cassette in 1993. Now his career is finally old enough to drink. Opting for a high basket-to-egg ratio, Horne moves into his third decade as a performer, songwriter, author, and teacher.
Based in Knoxville, Tennessee, Greg keeps a busy schedule. He performs as a soloist and on guitar, fiddle, and mandolin with RB Morris, Jay Clark, and Wild Ponies.
Contrasting his old-time and folk influenced acoustic side, the Greg Horne Band brings out the rock and roll in his songs. They have been in the studio working on a debut release for 2015.
Horne sets himself apart by using his guitar and fiddle as equal duet partners with his voice. The finely tuned lyrics heard on his recent release “Basically Sane” have drawn comparisons to John Prine and Vic Chesnutt.
Horne has authored over a dozen educational books for Alfred Music, including the Complete Ukulele Method in 2013. Horne's Complete Acoustic Guitar Method has been in print since 2001, and will be published in a revised new edition in late 2014. - for use in publications and promotion
"Incredibly clear, personal, colorful, and picture perfect lyrics...big vocal and guitar chops. His unassuming demeanor did not hint at his strong performance capability." - Dennis Jones - Two Louies Magazine, Portland OR
"Greg Horne makes music that is both easy to enjoy and hard to classify. While his work offers whiffs of barn-dance country and barroom rock'n'roll, every so often something pops up that turns your head in a new direction. The overriding sensation is of a man who knows what he's doing and enjoys doing it - immensely." - Mountain Xpress, Asheville NC
“Anchoring it all is Horne's love of Americana -- the truly honest, roots-oriented art form that comes from homes and hearths throughout American history rather than studio wizardry and trickery… With "Basically Sane," Horne channels a number of roots-music masters, from the throaty baritone of Sam Bush to Vic Chesnutt's lyricism to the humor and heart of classics by John Prine.”

“In a field where technique often takes a backseat to emotion and songwriting, Horne’s a master technician, as capable of fleet-fingered picking and bluesy string bends as he is of solidly constructed compositions, and he shows that playing well and playing like you mean it aren’t exclusive of each other… The opening song, “I Liked You Better,” would fit right in on John Prine’s Sweet Revenge”

Though not a constant road dog, Greg keeps a busy schedule around the Southeast and occasionally beyond. He has a penchant for coming in as an unknown and leaving as a regular. Horne is a recurring core performer at the Jammin' at Hippie Jack's festival, as well as other house concerts, clubs and venues.
In recent years Greg has also become a highly valued sideman and bandmember, performing with artists such as RB Morris, Jay Clark, and Wild Ponies. Horne's distinctive skills as a guitarist, fiddler, and mandolinist can be heard on recent releases by Matt Woods, Kevin Abernathy and Blue Mother Tupelo.
Contrasting his old-time and folk influenced acoustic side, the Greg Horne Band brings out the rock and roll in his songs. Greg and the band have been in the studio working on a debut release for 2015.
In performance, Horne sets himself apart with the quality of his instrumental work. Greg uses his guitar and fiddle as equal duet partners, combined with finely tuned lyrics that have drawn comparisons to John Prine and Vic Chesnutt. Songs from his recent solo release "Basically Sane" are heard on Knoxville's WDVX and other radio stations.
An experienced educator, Greg was a faculty member of the National Guitar Workshop for twenty years. Horne taught songwriting and guitar classes with guests such as Robert Lee Castleman, Chris Smither and Duane Jarvis. He was on the 2011 faculty of the Crown of the Continent Guitar Festival in Montana, teaching a week long songwriting workshop with guest artist David Wilcox.
Horne has authored over a dozen educational titles published internationally by Alfred Music, some of which have been translated into multiple languages. His latest release is a three-volume Complete Ukulele Method co-authored with Shana Aisenberg and featuring DVDs by Daniel Ho, published in 2013. Horne's Complete Acoustic Guitar Method has been continuously in print since 2001, and will be published in a revised new edition in late 2014.
Greg's roles as performer, songwriter, teacher and author are tied together by a collector's ear for music, and a dry humor compounded by years of listening to Bob & Ray and Dragnet while alone in the car.
"I try to build songs for myself where the jokes won't completely wear out on me, or the novel parts don't eventually become too boring. The songs that have moved me to want to do this have had that quality. You can sing them over and over again and the funny parts stay funny and the sad parts stay sad. They keep rewarding you as you move through life with them." - Greg in an interview by Steve Wildsmith, The Daily Times, Maryville TN
"Horne's a master technician, as capable of fleet-fingered picking and bluesy string bends as he is of solidly constructed compositions, and he shows that playing well and playing like you mean it aren't exclusive of each other" - Matthew Everett, Metro Pulse, Knoxville TN
