Gorgeously awash in guitar-based textures amidst hypnotic rhythms and serene vocals, “Sorry, Darling” is a stunning track from Great Wave, a band from Scranton, PA. The “don’t be sorry,” hook features gorgeous, yearning vocal tones with an ominous, descending tonal shift toward its bookend. In the final minute, clamoring percussion — reminiscent of Radiohead’s material — intensifies over the textural evolution to conclude in memorable form. This and preceding track “Garlic & Sage” show a band with heaps of talent and atmospheric ability, touting a confident and unique sound heavy on textures in the dream-pop and shoegaze veins. Here’s to a big 2020 for Great Wave. - Obscure Sound
Scranton, Pennsylvania shoegaze band Great Wave are next with their second and most recent single “Sorry, Darling”. The shoegaze standards are here: hushed, sugary vocals and gauzy textures stacked on top of each other until they become near impenetrable. However, the depressive vocal register drop downs leading out of the chorus into ominous instrumental passages, as well as the cacophony of the final section, with clattering percussion and swirling, warping guitars swallowing up the song’s form like a vortex of dark matter, create a somber, eerie tone that helps to distinguish it from much of its ilk. "Party Song" by Doghouse Charlie (who recently changed their name to "Great Wave") was featured in SyFy's television show, "Z Nation". -
Great Wave is an interesting blend of worn-in dream pop with brainer threads of indie-rock and shoegaze. The main driving force “is the friend of the season“. While this premiering track sounds at first like an outdoor band warming up in the hazy sun, a woodwind vibration will put you into the minds of Sparklehorse, Wilco, Low, and Bon Iver. With bright reverberating lyrics that melt into cascades of overlapping tones, its well-trodden and sophisticated for your soul. We remain a nomadic DIY community full of desperate realistic dreamers. Perhaps this grounded track will put you in the right pace of taking a breath of fresh air and being there for people next to you, in these weird and difficult times we are living. Stay strong mates in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and everywhere you are.
