George Scherer is an Americana singer/songwriter from Alabama, who for almost 30 years has played around the state and the southeast, as well as in far-flung spots like Colorado, Texas, and No Carolina. He has played his original music and distinctive covers in restaurants, bars, coffee shops as well places like Eddies' Attic in Atlanta, the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, the Flora-Bama, Lulu's, The Nick in Birmingham, the Noble Savage in Shreveport, the Black Warrior Songwriters Festival, the Birmingham Do-Dah Day Festival, the Carrboro Music Festival in NC, Celebrate Marettia Festival, to name a few. His songs have won awards at the Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie songwriters competition. He has released 4 CDs of mostly original music and has had comparisons to Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Steve Earle, Tom Waits, and Steve Young. His songs vary from love songs and comic portrayals of Americana, to serious and socially conscious. His raspy voice and singing style is often compared to Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen or Johnny Cash.
