A promising new instrumental act has popped up in Seattle, and it goes by the name of Gems. Sporting an unconventional setup of two drummers and two synth operators, Gems hit you with heavy grooves and polyrhythmic interplay while Moog-generated liquid-sex bass lines and champagne bubble-leads seduce you to the dance floor. If you need references, think DJ Shadow harvesting the love juices of a Kraftwerk-lubricated ménage à trois between Tangerine Dream, Funkadelic, and Boards of Canada. Gems, a Seattle based rock band, lays down deep danceable grooves full of twists and turns underneath a canopy of haunting synthesized mayhem unlike anything you've ever heard. Two drummers, Adrian Van Batenburg and Jacob Evans, provide the foundation of syncopated interweaving rhythms, while two keyboardists, Gary Palmer and Dan Rapport, build melodic and bass heavy songs around it.
