I think we all know and it is safe to say that Hip Hop will never be the same. With the evolution of music that we experience every year, many of us still hold on to a style that we know still carries our culture through and through. With that being said, it’s almost inevitable that we will meet artists that go beyond the typical styles and try and create their own techniques and methods to the ever changing hip hop genre. Some will be tasteless and others will make it through the bricks and onto a bigger platform if people can learn to appreciate a style that doesn’t totally take away from what we are used to.
Jahn Q. Publaq is an artist from South Jersey. With his latest EP “HipRoc-SoulRag ALL ACCESS” he brings about a style in hip hop that incorporates music from a few different genres and brings them together to cultivate a unique style. He describes his style as “Hip Hop swagger, rock star mentality, soul in his blood, and reggae in his history.” It took me a little while to really appreciate what he had done but putting aside the fact that it wasn’t supposed to be a total hip hop EP and incorporating my good ear and appreciation for music in general, it became an EP I was more impressed by than disappointed in. The first track “Super Hero” has a beat that has the ability to put you in a zone for listening. Once I got into that zone, carrying the rest of the EP was easy. He has a mixture of sounds that can out you in the mood to dance, chill, have a few drinks, smoke a blunt, or just bop to the music. I can’t leave you without saying that Jahn also has lyrics that are up on current events as well as a few sweet words for the ladies.
Shout out to Jahn QP, Cuzzo Beats, and DJ Supa for introducing me to a different style of music. I am one who truly appreciates when old meets new and doesn’t compromise my listening pleasure. - D.Grease
