"Edi Fuego- F.Y.F EP Review"

Edi Fuego - F.Y.F

Edi Fuego’s “F.Y.F” is the literal embodiment of what true heart and soul sounds like. Absolutely stunning, he brings together hip-hop, pop, G-funk, and electro into a combination that is a dazzling burst of color. His storytelling abilities prove to be unparalleled for he combines his own personal experiences within this present societal context. Passionate delivery for certain, there is a fire that exists in each one of these tracks. The production has a careful cadence to it, from the silky-smooth bass that rumbles through each piece to the clever hooks he employs throughout. Careful balance reigns supreme over the works for they are elegantly constructed and possess plenty of light. Most striking out of all of this is the sheer positivity he brings, even amongst some of the saddest moments, for there is always hope in this distinct sonic universe.

A lot of the sound distinctly reminds me of Kendrick Lamar’s equally powerful works. Even the cover has a reminiscent gaze of “good kid, m.A.A.d city” about it. From the funky grace of the sound to the sheer spirit he imbues into every line, there is a reassuring presence about the whole of the journey. Despite his origins in North Carolina, there is a sun-soaked old school California sound to his work, bringing up imagery of early 90s hip-hop/pop hybrids. Thanks to this warmth the songs feel like invitations into a comforting, communal world.

Easily the highlight of the collection comes from the undeniably classic sound of “Distant Lover”. Literally everything one could want in a song, from the wormy little synth line to the deep-house piano chords, it all works. His voice proves to be the very heart of it all from which all else flows. An arena-filling sound reigns supreme on the intense exploration of “On Fire”. “Lonely Stoner” slows things down a bit, stripping the sound down to the essentials. From there the piece is built up in a delicate, fragile way. On a relaxed note the reflective “Pain In My Eye” brings the whole thing to a close.

Full of absolute love and compassion, Edi Fuego brings nothing but good vibes on the chilled-out bliss of “F.Y.F”. - Beachsloth
