Exclusive Interview
Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
Dy-verse Productions Based in San Mateo,Ca Bay Area, and we’ve been doing music for the last 10 years, started doing promo team for major artists like Bone thugs,Outlaws,d3 entertainment,A2Zentertainment with Steve Lobel, and others. Soon we networked and stared putting together projects including Dy-verse Productions Presents Sweatpant’s N D-bo’s A Mateo compilation and The Levey Vol 2, K-rek No Roads Can Hold me during this time we were doing concerts, showcases, radio shows, podcasts, anything to get our name Dy-verse Productions. We work with very talent artist of all styles looking for advancement and do our best to get out there.
Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
Maddness featuring Nitris 211, K-rek Raid is the major song on our currently releases. Maddness came about with production from D-rugz,Timmy Stone from BadSeed Records. The beats had been sitting there for a while and Nitris 211 from Grip Tight Productions along with artist K-rek and Raid finally decided to lay something down, and the was just complete Maddness, just like all the stuff going on during the period of time. It showcases the artist that related closely to Dy-verse Productions
What are you currently working on and what can we expect to see?
Currently we have several projects in the work, Dy-verse Productions Same Shirt Different Day, a compilation featuring a variety of talented artists and producers.. K-rek Is one of the artists releasing Toxic Files, a solo effort from Dy-verse Productions. Another Artist Roberto Sanchez is recording a cd in Spanish. We are also working on a bunch of Strollin Thru yo hood mixtapes, Djripridah dat piff Mix-tapes featuring new and old talent, along with video and dvd’s, We also have a new podcast called Music maddness podcast, Dy-verse Productions have plently of stuff that we are working on and always looking to do more.
Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
Laziness, and no unity There is so much talent in the industry, and so many rappers, singer, artist, everybody is doing there own thing and don’t want to put the effort to make it, We are in a world, where almost everything is digital and you could get anything you want on the internet, but it shouldn’t stop them from the concrete work and grinding on the streets, stores, shows anywhere to get the word out.
What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
Major setbacks include ballin’ on little budget, not having unity, not having access to proper studios/tools when needed, being caught in between analog promoting and digital.. Every set back that comes we learn from it and try to succeed and hopes it gets better.
What are some things artists need to be careful of?
Egos, there is a lot of people working in the industry, your ego could be good for your raps, but if your an up and coming artist, boosting and being too egotistical could bring negativity to your spotlight and people don’t like that.
What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
Don’t just make music, because everybody is doing it, make it because you want to put the effort in achieving success. and don’t expect to sell your cds and downloads and youtube views to sell just bye sitting there, my favorite hashtag is #alwaysgrinding, if it going to downtown, or rocking shows, promoting at events, stickers, posters, they know what to do..JUST DO IT emailing, facebooking people, and make sure that anybody u see that seems interested get them something to show that you got it going on business cards, flyers whatever any promo is good.
What are the best ways to sell your products as an artist?
Get out and do it. Network.
What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
Taking it to the streets, you never know who you see.
Where can people visit you?

various artists :: Sweatpants 'n' D-bo's :: Dy-verse Productions
as reviewed by Matt Tomer
"Sweatpants 'n' D-bo's," something of a greatest hits for Socal's Dy-verse Productions, might as well be a greatest misses. As blunt as I am, it works to reflect the music on this compilation. Straight up and straight forward, wannabes populate the entire disc. Not wannabes as in wack rappers; the emcees, damn near all thirty or so, show a great deal of potential and skill in their flows alone. With good rhythm and great voices, they all can rap, but they effectively prove that talent is (maybe) half the battle.
A list of titles more than illustrates how amazingly conformist the compilation is: "Get With U Girl," "I Luv This Weed," "Life Is," "Rep Yo Hood," and "Shit Gets Deep" are as recycled as water bottles and soda cans, with content as been-there as said liquids. Nonsensical, violent battling makes up far too much of the 79:47 (that's right - not 13 seconds to spare!), and the apex of creativity can be found in lines like "you got one nine, well nigga I got two."
There's a lot of mean muggin,' and maybe just as much marijuana, but "Shit Gets Deep" possibly best exemplifies the compilation's amateur appeal. Forgive my arrogance, but I honestly can't understand how a rapper walks into a studio to record "from an emcee to an emcee, this shit gets deep." I'm not KRS One, but I know what makes hip-hop fun to listen to, and an artist telling me just how stellar he is - ESPECIALLY coming from a completely unestablished one - doesn't cut it. Seeing the Dy-verse crew is Cali-based, let me lend a hand of professional advice: listen to more Murs and early Pharcyde. Don't aspire to imitate their greatness or even appeal to my own fandom. Rather, understand that making hip-hop that reflects your own life is infinitely more engrossing than drive-by's and reefer. Those topics are best handled by particular, established crowds (ones backed by good production, ahem), and desperately trying to apply to a norm is a truly pathetic thing to listen to. Even the parental advisory sticker is a homemade photo shop job to show how f'real they are.
"Lady" is an obviously forced pile of stinking mush, but the aforementioned "Get With U Girl" is even worse: "I wanna get with you girl, 'cause there's something about your body baby." Let's not get TOO romantic now. Chillious puffs his chest for "More Felonies Than Friends" but comes off more like a joke than a threat. "All Game" is but one of several recordings that sound like live radio performances, and "Special Prayer" might as well have been another mediocre instrumental, seeing I could barely hear any of Cio Castenada's vocals.
Musically, "Sweatpants & D-bo's" is proof that professional recording equipment is a safer bet than a laptop. Nearly all of the 23 beats consist of 3rd grade-level keyboard melodies and extra chincey drums, some with shitty vocals, some with a dash of shitty samples. Either way, all the emcees are severely hindered by the unfortunate, emotionless selection of beats. Still, "Try Me" is like culture shock, finally sounding somewhat professional with a mandolin loop easily comparable to one that Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind would dig up. Elsewhere, Dy-verse Productions managed to recruit the beat-making specialties of Chops of the Mountain Brothers, who, besides an entertaining intro of scratching, is also extremely underwhelming.
"Sweatpants 'n' D-bo's" is a culmination of the most cliched elements of post 2K hip-hop, all over grating beats and recorded poorly. It's not a hopeless affair, in that talent is evident. But clearly, Dy-verse productions just need to get back in the lab. Or get back to writing. Maybe take up yoga. Anything to move past the monotony of "Sweatpants 'n' D-bo's." Maybe their most brilliant artistic touch comes in the album's ironic closer: six seconds of laughing - rap reviews

San Mateo hip hop explodes on CSM student's new CD

As all Californians know-or should know, at least-the Bay Area music movement is climbing the charts in popularity and talent.
Prompted almost three years ago upon the demise of legendary rapper Andre Hicks (best known to his fans as Mac Dre), while being followed by local rap-stars Keak da Sneak and E-40, rap in the Bay has not only claimed radio waves in Nor-Cal-it's become a way of life.
This form of music has peaked with in the last year. As a result, clothing styles have been launched, an almost entirely new dialect has been invented (colorfully illustrated with sayings such as "Yadadimean?") and people everywhere are sporting their stunner shades at night.
The music is marked and recognized by hard bass-beats, entrancing rhythms and lyrics inspired by the demographics and styles of youth on the peninsula-as well as its ability to make kids "go dumb."
The music-though loved by many-has gotten its fair share of criticism for its references to drug related violence. But what style of rap hasn't gotten knocked for that?
Ultimately, fans in the Bay seem to be veering away from the harsh gang lifestyles found in the nitty-gritty areas of New York's Harlem or Los Angeles' Crenshaw. Instead, it seems that kids from the Bay engage themselves in what's known as the Hyphy movement to do just that: get hyphy.
What does "hyphy" mean, exactly?
Well, as it's been defined on wikipedia.org: "an individual is said to 'get hyphy' when they act or dance in an overstated and ridiculous manner."
Being a promoter of this style of rap-or simply just liking it-insinuates that one is willing to get ridiculous and throw caution to the wind despite what others might think. It's not an overstatement to say that the Hyphy movement is rap's all-time most light hearted.
But it's already getting old.
It happens to every genre of music. Fads come and go-people inspire music, the music inspire fans, new trends and fashions are of consequence, and then something huger comes along to blow the previous right out of the water and make it a distant memory.
Now people are looking to refine the lyrics and sounds of rap music in the Bay Area. Fans with talent tantamount to big names on the radio are stepping up and getting heard and it doesn't have to be found in Hollywood or Oakland or San Francisco. It's happening right here in San Mateo.
Justin Barwick, the 23-year-old name behind Dy-verse Productions and a student at CSM, recently took business classes to be able to launch himself as an executive producer.
He also took a course in graphic design so he could personally design CDs. Barwick's label just released its first album, "Sweatpants n D-bo's."
"Sweatpants n D-bo's" is a compilation of San Mateo's most talented rappers, all people that Barwick believes "should be heard."
Among these talents are his younger brother Drew Barwick, or Dre Dub, Nimo, Nitris 211, J-mac, Mav The Sav, Freddy Fresco, Krzma, and many more. One thing these names have in common is that their musical inclinations-their own creations, lyrics and voices-are pretty damn good.
Barwick's concern isn't to further promote or mock the Hyphy movement. The album consists of 23 tracks, some of which are named "In the 6-5-0" and "3rd Ave," inspired by none other than San Mateo's downtown area.
Each song differs in sound and rhythm. Some beats are inspired by different nationalities, and there are a few slow rap songs as well as R&B songs. Different music genres are fused together to get a unique vibe that is simultaneously redolent of sounds similar to that of 11-5.
When asked how Barwick would personally describe the sound of his record, he had a brief answer. "It's in the name-Dy-verse. San Mateo is a diverse area, you know, and it's no p--ssy town. These voices need to be heard. That's why I created this album. I brought these people together to represent San Mateo and what it means to live here."
Barwick is in the process of creating his second album which will feature many of the same talents, new rhythms, even more diverse genres, and some all-girl tracks. Some of the talents featured on "Sweatpants n D-bo's" will also be performing at CSM's hip hop show on Dec. 8. The performance will start at 6 pm. Check out myspace.com/dyverseproductions to hear sounds of Mateo.
