Such an independent movement is only forming in Tupelo now. There were hometown hip-hop heroes before Rae Sremmurd: Durdy was mentored by Plantersville, Mississippi rapper D Mac from the time he was 12 up until his death a decade ago. Albums like 2002's Round 1 were what made Pistol Maine a "legendary" local hip-hop figure, by Bernadette's recollection. Studios, at home and otherwise, have cropped up over the past decade, too. DURDY first performed live at age 15 at a local festival with artists like Big Moe, Olivia, Tank, Pretty Willie, and Gucci mane. He has recently hit the stage with artists Celina Lina, DJ Pressure, Pistol Maine, Mr Raw, Haystack, JellyRoll, Lil Wyte, Al Kapone, Tommy wright 3rd, Hot boy Turk, Sremm life crew, Finesse 2 Tymes and Rich Boy. He has performed at clubs in Atlanta, Mississippi, and opened for academy award winning rapper Al Kapone in Memphis. James DURDY Garmon got his start in the hip hop music scene in his hometown Tupelo, MS which is also home to a diverse group of legendary talent ranging from the likes of Elvis Presley to Rae Sremmurd. He built his unique style growing up listening to everything from Rock and roll to Blues, and being influenced by the sounds of nearby Memphis Tennessee. He used music as a way to survive poverty and the streets, managing to start off writing poetry, and then through writing poetry he emerged as a rap artist. The name Durdy was given to him as a child growing up because he was often trying to hustle people out of money or candy, as well as the fact that he was poor growing up and often Mississippi is referred to as being in the “durdy south.”
