Jersey native is trying to use lessons learned in his sometimes tough life to make it big in the world of rap and hip-hop.
Andre Gibson, known artistically as Dre Skuffs, has already completed eight CDs, the latest of which, “Chill Pill,” is set to be released by Paid in Full Family, an independent production company based in Trenton/Newark NJ.
A married father of 9-month-old identical twin boys, Skuffs, 26, said music has always been an outlet for him.
“I started using music as a way to express myself,” he said, noting that his father exposed him to music growing up by acts such as Earth, Wind and Fire and Stevie Wonder. By age 11, Skuffs started writing as a way to release his emotions.
He got into artists such as Tupac, Nas and Biggie Smalls, and a dream was born.
By 18, the 2003 Willingboro High School graduate started delving into recording. He traveled up and down the East Coast, trying to network and make a name for himself.
“It’s a business,” Skuffs said. “You never know who you are going to meet. It’s all about networking.”
ffs, who studied communications at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., taught himself various aspects of the business – recording, videography, graphic arts. It was a way to learn the trade while meeting people who could help him, he said.
“You have to turn your dreams into reality,” he said. “If you have that dream and goal in life, you just have to do certain things to get there. No one is going to do it for you.”
His first album, “For the Streets Vol. 1,” was released in 2004. To get his material out, he would even post up in different neighborhoods up and down the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway to hand it out to people for free.
Skuffs wouldn’t go into much detail about the hard lessons he has learned, but said his lyrics – he writes all his own songs – tell his story.
“(In the beginning) it was easy because it was just the streets,” he said, acknowledging that his lyrics are often edgy and profanity-laced. But he wants listeners to get his deeper, positive message – about getting past your mistakes and making the right decisions for the future.
“My grandfather and father always taught me it’s all about a legacy,” he said. “There are certain paths I won’t take. … We all go through struggles. I used (mine) to my advantage.”
Skuffs said he doesn’t want to be “just another rapper.”
“I want to be successful in this field,” he said. “I want to be a legend. + I want my music to live forever.”
Skuffs has already collaborated with other up-and-coming artists such as Patwa, Big Ooh and Nyticka Hemingway. He has also taken advantage of local opportunities, including working at Axis Recording Studio in the Willingboro Town Center.
Glenn Loveless, engineer and studio manager, said he believes Willingboro has a lot of talent waiting to be tapped.
“From what I am listening to, he’s got it,” Loveless said of Skuffs’ material. “He’s got to be true to his music. A lot of rappers don’t have substance. They just try to emulate the last great rapper.”
Loveless believes young artists like Skuffs need an outlet in this area. For his part, Skuffs said he is committed to working hard to pursue his dream. He performs along the East Coast, keeping a side job part time to support his young family. He said his wife is supportive of his goal, but he knows the reality is that his dream also has to pay the bills.
“I get (determination) from my mother,” he said. “She was always a hard worker. I witnessed her turning nothing into something her whole life.”
As he juggles fatherhood, Skuffs said he is making an effort to expose his music online and in the media.
