A stage profuse with glitter sparkled as Disco Shrine’s synth pop created waves of movement throughout the crowd at the newly opened Hi Hat last Friday night. The dream pop duo just released their EP Soft Fur, and fittingly threw a colorful dance party to celebrate. Technicolor balloons lit up the Beating Lights event, which also featured pop-up booths from Wovenfree, Lorna Alkana Art, Cake Lust, and Cassidy Bliss Vintage. The night’s line-up featured a multitude of groove-worthy groups (Tambourines, King Shelter, and Little Wolves), but Disco Shrine shone the brightest. Lead singer Jess Delijani opened the set with “Get off your butts and dance because that’s what I am going to do and I don’t want to do it alone,” and the masses obeyed, making for an ebullient experience. As she bounced around the stage energetically, the animated spirit of her silver feet was contagious. The invigorated crowd took to the newly-released tracks quickly, erupting with praise after each dance-inducing hit. The deep reverb of their electronic sound, provided by the talented Tommy Nickerson, seemed to blur all social barriers as the crowd of strangers effortlessly morphed into a party.
The success of the night boils down to the dreaminess of Disco Shrine. With sexy electro effects, gooey vocals, and echoing guitar riffs, the music begs to be danced to. Their uniqueness is derived from a surprising level of moodiness within their lyrics, which the duo has discussed with us before (see our story with them in Issue 2). When Jess and Tommy first connected, they remember being primarily inspired by their respective sadness. However, Jessica explained, “We promised each other that if we ever did make music together, it’d be fun and sexy and will make people want to get up and dance.” In Soft Fur, they have done just that and they have done a damn good job of it, too. - The Paper Mixtape
This week I bring to you a very special and talented new group from Los Angeles that’s quickly taking over the indie dance scene. This passion project from LA-based natives Jessica Delijani and Tommy Nickerson is called Disco Shrine.
Though the project is very new, Jes and Tommy are no strangers to music. Jes, spurred by a relentless love for folk music, taught herself guitar and banjo at the age of 16. Tommy also grew up with music, playing every instrument from upright bass to trumpet. With a vast artillery of musical influences, they’ve created a sound that is both unpredictable and oxymoronic yet demands dancing all while leaving a nostalgic aftertaste for something that’s too far gone.
Just a few months ago, the duo released their first single “Shy”. Today they have released the video to go with it and it’s just as dope as the song! Directed by Andrew Butte, the video portrays the sexual tension and ideas that run through ones mind once they see another person they are attracted to. Colorful visuals and fast cuts accompanied by lead singer Jes’s sexy dance moves all add to the driving intensity and high energy of the video. By the end, you’re left with the simple idea: if someone catches your eye, you should go for it. Life is too short to dwell on the past.
Disco Shrine will be performing Feb 19th @ The Hi Hat (EP Release Show) in Highland Park, as well as Mar 7th @ Silver Lake Lounge in Silverlake, California.
The band also plans to release a four song EP on February 19th called ‘Soft Fur’ that will include ‘Shy’ and ‘Drive’. In the meantime, check out their new vid below then follow them on their socials for updates on upcoming shows and future releases! - Obey Clothing
The dichotomy of Disco Shrine is inherent in their name. Half party, half spiritual devotional to said party, they are damn serious about having a damn good time. And that’s what their debut EP Soft Fur is all about. Falling in love? Dance it up. Broken heart? Dance it out. Bored? Dance it through. Lazy? Just go home then.
With this sudden heat wave we’re having in L.A. it makes a person want to get out and get weird, amirite? Thankfully local good-time goddess Beating Lights has cooked up just the right concoction for our Friday night. Join the party at The Hi-Hat to celebrate Disco Shrine’s release of Soft Fur as well as sets by King Shelter and Tambourines. And if you can still stand upright after all that, there are some extra pop-up goodies. It’s like a mini music festival but without any camping or dehydration. Rally the troops and see you there! - The Burning Ear

Disco Shrine is the passion project of LA-based natives Jessica Delijani and Tommy Nickerson. The duo began their collaboration as a result of heartache from both of their recently ended relationships. However, instead of clinging on to their pasts, they decided that together they would combine their talents to make catchy synth pop dance tunes. You wouldn't expect glittery synth pop, echoey vocals, and funky guitar riffs, born from seasoned veterans of the folk and rock realms, but that's exactly what Disco Shrine is: unpredictable and oxymoronic. Their music demands dancing, but leaves a nostalgic aftertaste for something that's too far gone.
