Amarillo pop-rock band Deep Diver will celebrate the release of its newest CD with a Friday show at Palace Coffee Co. in Canyon.

The show begins at 8 p.m. at the coffee shop, 420 15th St. in Canyon. Neighbour will open.

“Under the Neon Lights,” which was released digitally and physically Tuesday, is “equally introspective and fun,” drummer Josh Dolezal said in a news release.

“I think our main goal with this album is to introduce people to our sound, and give people an album that’s uplifting and fun,” singer/pianist/guitarist Steven Dolezal said.

The band also features a third Dolezal brother, Matt, as well as bassist Johnny Bell.

Amarillo rock band Deep Diver will headline a fundraiser for needy students Friday in Canyon.

The Back-to-School Bash runs from 7 to 10 p.m. at The Paper Crane, 2320 Fourth Ave. in Canyon.

“I was in Walmart doing some small shopping and noticed a child thumbing through school supplies,” organizer and Paper Crane owner Jesse Melson said. “I watched him for a few minutes, seeing his face sadden when he knew he wouldn’t get those school supplies. I just felt compelled that there would be a way to help students like that to receive the supplies that they needed and didn’t have a way of getting.”

Also on the bill are Avenue Two and Sleep for Dreaming.

The show is free, but donations will be accepted.

The WTAMU One Sessions will be filming in high defintion a live musical production at the Fine Arts Complex’s AT&T HD Studio on Nov. 14 at 7pm. The performance will be done by a local Amarillo group called Deep Diver. Three brothers, Steven, Matt, and Josh Dolezal formed Deep Diver during the summer of 2010. Deep Diver is mainly a pop/rock band that is influenced by a diverse group of bands such as Jimmy Eat World, Journey, Pearl Jam and Elton John.

To promote Deep Diver’s performance for One Sessions, the Dolezal brothers were guests on WT’s radio station, 91.1 The One on Nov. 7. During Top 21, the previously unreleased, and unheard even by the Dolezals, finished track of White Foxes was played over the air.

“It’s [White Foxes] the most rock song on the record, but has some catchy pop style vocals too,” Steven Dolezal said.

“This will be our maiden voyage, into doing a live video recording. Luckily we’ve been rehearsing and the camera crew has come a few times,” Steven said when asked if they have ever done a live recording. “It will be completely new for us.”

Although the Dolezals have never done a live recording, a behind the scenes camera record Deep Diver during practice. The hope is that rehearsals with the camera crew will acclimate the Dolezals to being recorded by camera before the live recording on Nov 14.

Deep Diver also performed a set at the local Canyon coffee shop, the Palace Coffee Company on Nov. 8. Palace was packed with people coming to support and listen to Deep Diver. All the seats were taken leaving many standing around the walls and in the hallway to watch the performance. According to Steven Dolezal, the set is slightly similar to what will be played for the live recording.

“I love the atmosphere of Palace,” Matt Dolezal said.

A live recording might be new for Deep Diver, but the One Sessions crews – set design, lights, camera, and audio – are ready. Student volunteers run all of the One Session crews. While volunteering, students get the opportunity to learn about the broadcasting industry and get hands on experience with professional gear.

One Sessions regularly submits final productions of each semester’s show to organizations like the National Broadcasting Society. Last fall, One Sessions submitted a production to nationals and won the Bronze Telly Award.

“It’s very prestigious,” Lance Wells, production manager, said. “It’s almost like winning a Grammy, only for college kids.”

After winning the Telly award, Wells had an internship with Covenant Recording. During the internship at Covenant, Wells met Deep Diver and asked the Dolezals to play for One Sessions.

“It’s a family event,” Wells said. “They [student crews] can show their parents what they are doing.”

The Paper Crane, a local art gallery and coffee shop, hosted their first Back-to-School Bash to benefit area schools on Friday, Aug. 29.
The event was held to fundraise school supplies needed for Canyon Independent School District elementary schools. Event attendees could receive 50 percent off of beverages purchased if they donated a package of school supplies. In addition to collecting items, The Paper Crane sold limited edition screen printed T-shirts and merchandise to raise funds to purchase more school supplies.
“This is the first show ever that we have done,” Jesse Melson, owner of The Paper Crane, said. “We are seeing how it goes. It’s a learning experience. Deep Diver wanted to do a CD release concert and it morphed into a back to school fundraiser.”
The event opened outdoor behind The Paper Crane with Avenue Two, a Canyon based band, followed by Sleep for Dreaming, an Amarillo rock/alternative/indie band, and closed with Deep Diver, another Amarillo pop/rock band, performing live. Melson said the Back-to-School Bash was promoted through television previews, Facebook, flyers and through word-of-mouth.
“I heard about this event through my friend, who comes to The Paper Crane a lot,”
Olivia Trabysh, WTAMU English major, said. “I don’t know any of the bands playing, but I think that it is good to come check it out, especially in Canyon. There are not a lot of events on campus like this, so it’s worth listening to.”
The three local bands performed back-to-back sets, playing original and cover songs. Sleep for Dreaming and Deep Diver performed various songs off their latest albums.
“Our slogan at The Paper Crane is: to inspire, to enrich, and to create,” Melson said. “We want to incorporate that in all types of art, be it fine arts or music. We are always looking for local artists and musicians to showcase at the shop.”
The Paper Crane’s next major event is Pink Matter: Solo Show featuring Jacob Bautista, a WTAMU Studio Art major. Bautista, an Amarillo artist, specializes in 2-D art across various medias. Pink Matter opens 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6 at The Paper Crane.
“All the Pink Matter work is done in pastel and there are about ten pieces from me,” Bautista said. “My artwork is about how inside everyone’s mind there’s hopes, fears, dreams, wants, all the emotions you or I have. It’s about discovering this connection everyone has through mother universe.”
