Death Valley Beach Bums

The Scoop: Gainesville, FL. isn’t known at all. Most people who have heard of it say it’s just a small, quiet, conservative town. Yeah, the Death Valley Beach Bums prove that wrong. DVBB is a 12-plus member hip-hop collective that consists of rappers, producers, fashion designers, graphic artists and videographers. “No Flavor” is the perfect representation and lead single for the rebellious, anti-industry and conformity attitude that they’re delivering to the rap game. The eerie hypnotizing atmosphere give fans a fix that can only be cooked up by one of the Bums. The beautifully off-and-weird production is done by DVBB producer Q* Jones, who sets the tone for the Xanax anthem. The fun but creepy piano keys bouncing over the track and the neck breaking hi-hats make this a catchy anthem for a teenager escaping into a mental vacation. Rappers Poszi Percé and King $lim deliver drug-induced verses with opposing dynamics; as Percé raps slow and stretchy with his lines, $lim rides the same flow but starts vocally-dancing and switches the pace as the beat progresses. This record makes makes you feel like you’re sinking in a chair letting your joint burn along with all your worries. The song’s called “No Flavor”, but the track sounds so thick and layered that it’s far from tasteless.
The Spin: Even if you’re not a fan of “self-medicating”, this low-fi griminess creeps up on you before you realize you’re already high. Death Valley Beach Bums’ drug savvy lyrics and dirty hypnotizing production floats you in a different mind state without realizing it. And anything that moves you is real art. To come from a city where the music culture is close to non-existent, it’s dope to see a rap group making such brash music that hipster-underground heads would love while middle america parents hate.
