"Pearland singer/songwriter Dawn Noelle has stories to tell"

Dawn Noelle was just 6 months old when her father died of a heart attack. But the 16-year-old singer and songwriter, who releases EP "Stories to Tell" this week, says she feels his presence in her music. "I never knew him. It just really breaks my heart because he was a musician," Noelle says. "He wrote songs and poetry. We would have really gotten along." Her EP's liner notes include a dedication to her dad, and feathers flutter throughout the artwork. That's a tribute to him, too. "Every time I pray, he sends me feathers, just so I know he's there," she says. "They show up in a lot of different places. I was walking out of school one day, and there was a feather laying on the grass. Also once when we were at Cracker Barrel eating. And I got two dove feathers at our hotel on a vacation. My favorite is finding feathers at the beach. I see feathers everywhere. It's just so magical to me." She explains in her liner notes: "Song ideas are like those feathers from heaven. Maybe my songs are gifts from my dad."

Dawn Noelle was born in New Mexico but moved to the Houston area before she was 2 years old. She has a twin sister and starts her junior year at Pearland High School later this year.

"Stories to Tell" is Dawn Noelle's second release, following 2012's "Breaking Free." But she sees this project, recorded at Castle Sound Labs in Tomball, as her true musical coming out. She was a competitive ice skater for four years, eventually leaving it behind for guitar. Dawn Noelle wrote or co-wrote every song on "Stories to Tell" - inspired by the likes of Michelle Branch, Kelly Clarkson and Paramore, established acts who push against the confines of pop-rock. She counts songwriter and former "American Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi, who has written for Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Christina Aguilera, as a prime influence. ("I'd freak out if I ever meet her.")

"My sound is more pop-rock oriented," she says. "I have a little bit of country and folk from my Texas roots. But I've been a pop-rock fan all my life. I've grown up with it."

The songs are polished, earnest and uplifting, with lyrics about believing in yourself, living an honest life and finding inner peace. Kickoff track "Don't Rush," a wistful riff on taking time to smell the roses, is one of her favorites. "When I was growing up, I really wanted to be a teenager. I really wanted to be older," she says. "It was so hard for me to believe that time would go by fast. My parents were like, 'You're gonna regret this when you grow up.' Now I'm older, and I just want everything to slow down."

Dawn Noelle sharpened her skills as part of the Real Life Real Music student songwriter camps, run by Texas country stalwart Kyle Hutton. Kids ages 10-18 work with an array of established singers and songwriters, including Susan Gibson Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines in Austin. They record, write songs and participate in music business workshops. She also took a video production class in school and assembled her own music video for "Time Machine."

"For me, music is a passion. I just had a yearning to write songs. I wrote my first one when I was 9 for a PTA contest," she says. "I don't know where I'm being led. But I'd like to be successful. I'd like to be well-known one day and perform in big arenas. That's my dream." - Houston Chronicle
