Detroit native David Shelby made an impressive debut last year with the release of “Rust Belt Cowboy,” a rollicking country album with plenty of rocking guitars. Shelby is back with follow-up EP “Oh Yeah” and, to his credit, has expanded his repertoire on this delightful sophomore outing.
“Working alongside (producers) Teddy Gentry and Russ Zavitson really brought out variations of who I am as a performer,” Shelby explains. “It was an experience that pushed me to explore how diverse I could be, vocally and stylistically, while being consistent to who my fans know me to be.”
The terrific backwoods anthem “Southern Drawl” launches the six-track platter, and Shelby also delivers the goods on standout tracks “Ride It Out,” “Burn That Bridge,” “Podunk” and the set-closing title track. The songs aren’t especially original, but Shelby delivers them with plenty of gusto and, when required, emotional sincerity. Keep an eye on this talented up-and-comer.
